Rescued 8
He sat down without ceremony, pulled out his check booklet from the inner pocket of his jacket and filled in the sum of one million for the compensation before handing it over to the Barrister. Before, 4:00 pm, the family got the message of the payment
At The Tourist Center.
Mr. Denise Bailey who had a tight schedule had called his wife three times just to ensure that she takes her rest seriously. Now, he had called to inform her that he would be coming back late.
“Oh! Hubby, I hope there is no problem?”
“No problem, my dear. My attention is needed at the Island. I will be brief over there.”
“It is all right. I love you.”
“I love you too. Take care of our daughter.”
“Certainly. I will take care of our son.”
They laughed heartily before they cut. The Denise concentrated on his work and when he got off work, he proceeded to the Island.
“Good evening, boss. It is my pleasure to see you.”
The gatekeeper greeted warmly when Mr. Denise Bailey got to the gate.
“Good evening. How are you?”
“I’m fine, boss.”
Now, Denise drove into the courtyard and parked at his dedicated parking lot, which was at the basement. The Security Officer who sighted him when he drove to the basement walked up to him joyously like a toddler whose mother just returned from shopping. Now, Mr. Denise Bailey became infected with the joy that radiated from his face, and he smiled too.
“Good evening, Boss. I am delighted to see you.”
“Good evening, officer. You look so happy today.”
The Security Officer smiled and responded.
“I am happy that you are here. Jude had been dying to see you.”
Mr. Denise Bailey stopped at the courtyard and looked at the Security Officer searchingly and demanded.
“Why is he dying to see me?”
“I think he has a lot to discuss with you. I see him as one with bottled up pains and wish to let out.”
He furrowed his brow and asked.
“How do you know?”
The Security Officer face showed worry before he responded.
“Even though he smiles a lot, I see pains hidden in the smiles.”
Mr. Denise Bailey who got what the Security Officer was trying to say requested.
“It is okay. Take me to his room.”
The Security Officer walked forward and Denise followed. He composed himself to give Jude the opportunity to freely relate with him. Soon, they were at Jude’s door. Then, the Security Officer gave Mr. Denise Bailey a reassuring look, he smiled and nodded before he tapped on the door. Jude, who, was familiar with his knock, was surprised because it was not time for dinner yet. So, he wondered what must have brought him, but he responded to the knock.
“A moment, please.”
Denise ran his hand through his hair and maintained a simple look with a friendly smile on his face. Then, Jude opened the door and was bewildered when he saw Mr. Denise Bailey, whom he still recognized despite meeting him only once and at night. He smiled and just like the Security Officer said, the pains in his smile was visible. Mr. Denise Bailey took the initiative to greet.
“My friend, good to see you again.”
“Good evening, boss. Good to see you. Please come in.”
Jude greeted and gave way for them to walk in. They walked and took their seats. Now, Jude’s eyes were already moist, and he fought to stop the tears from dropping. Mr. Denise Bailey who was smiling ignored the wet eyes and continued.
“How are you enjoying your piano keyboard, Jude?”
“Thank you so much, boss. It had kept me company. I appreciate.”
“You are welcome.”
Now, Jude’s voice was emotional, and he could no longer restrain his tears. He allowed them to flow freely. Then, Mr. Denise Bailey and the Security Officer exchanged glances before he took charge of the atmosphere in his usual tactful way.
“Jude, I can see that you don’t love our place. Do you mind if I take you back to the island?”
The stunned Jude who was hearing of an island for the first time looked at the two men before him and asked.
“Which island?”
Now, it was Mr. Denise Bailey’s turn to be stunned, and he eagerly asked.
“Where do you stay? The other day, you said you were going the same way with us, and we gave you a ride.”
Then, Jude Addy took a deep breath. Mr. Denise Bailey and the Security Officer noticed his twitchiness before he proceeded with his explanation.
“Pardon my manners. I lied to you. I said that to escape from death. Not only that, but I am an illegal emigrant that …”
He paused and searched their faces for a clue on how they felt, but found none. Mr. Denise Bailey urged him.
“I’m listening. Go on.”
He truthfully narrated his story, and they felt for him. Then, Denise asked.
“So the owner of the resort was your last boss?”
Mr. Denise Bailey who pretended that he was not familiar with the resort owner inquired.
“Yes, boss.”
“And the last operation you executed with him was to help him kidnap his woman from the government hospital?”
“You are right, boss.”
“Where was your boss that Friday, when his resort was bombed? Do you think he was killed in the explosion?”
“No, boss. He was not killed. He was not at the resort. Not only that, but he must be at his house with his woman.”
“Has he tried to contact you since the incident?”
“No, boss. Maybe he thought that I was killed in the explosion?”
“I see. It is a pity that you have to go through all these.”
“Thank you, boss.”
“So, what are your plans?”
Now, Jude was weeping unrestrained, and the Security Officer pacified him with a question that would help him make up his mind.
“I wish we know why you are crying. It is like you are missing your boss and the life he had exposed you to?”
He quickly nodded in disapproval and corrected.
“No. Not at all. Thinking that I had unintentionally worked with criminals left me with a disgusted feeling.”
“Then stop crying and let us think of a way forward.”
Nevertheless, Jude managed to comport himself and Denise repeated his question.
“What are your plans?”
Jude gave an honest response.
“I wish to have a decent job. A job that is free of criminal activities.”
“And become a legal emigrant too.”
Mr. Denise Bailey added, and Jude was startled. He had never thought of that because he believed it was not going to be possible. Then, Denise continued.
“Yes. You cannot be connected to me and be hiding from the authority. Currently, you can work with the cinema section.”
“Thank you, boss.”
Then, Mr. Denise Bailey continued.
“The manager will let you know what to do. You will get your full wage.”
“I appreciate, boss.”
“We will talk about your immigration status later.”
Now, the exhilarated Jude thanked Mr. Denise Bailey and the Security Officer. Afterwards, they took their leave and walked towards the Manager’s office. Then, the security officer suggested.
“I will suggest that we get accommodation for him at the island so that he can vacate the room.”
Mr. Denise Bailey refuted his suggestion straight away.
“I don’t think it is appropriate to let him mix up with them. You can see that he just recused himself from evil. Sending him to a ghetto will not be the best.”
“You are right, boss.”
They walked to the Manager’s office and Denise gave him instruction concerning Jude before he left. Jude was elated by Mr. Denise Bailey’s visit. The past four days had been a remarkable one in his life since the outbreak of war in his country. He praised God for delivering him from the likes of Mr. Stephen Bailey and connecting him with Denise.
On the way back home, Mr. Denise Bailey pondered on Jude Addy’s story.
“Poor boy. He began suffering early, and the privileged adults who would have rescued him took advantage of him. He did not even bother to check on him after the explosion. I cannot lay hands on the other adults, but I think I and Louis have paid him in his own coin.”
He became emotional the moment he thought of Louis and fought back his tears.
‘This envy must end on Saturday.’
He concluded as he drove home.
