Chapter 114: Hesitation
Emily furrowed her brows. She had just left home; what could be so urgent that it required a phone call now?
It seemed Emily was a bit annoyed by Andrew's nagging. In fact, she hadn't even realized that she had grown to despise Andrew from the bottom of her heart.
Seeing her expression, Henry knew it was Andrew calling.
Henry was a bit puzzled: Had their relationship always been like this, or had it only become strained after he arrived?
He didn't know that Andrew had issues in that area, and he hoped that it was his presence that made Emily start to dislike Andrew.
In that case, at least his feelings for her wouldn't be one-sided.
Emily reluctantly answered the phone, "Hello?"
Andrew's voice came through the phone, "Emily, I'm not sure what's going on. I wanted Jason to come over earlier, but he told me he had something to do this afternoon and couldn't make it. He hung up before I could ask why."
Emily glanced at Henry, who continued drinking his soup nonchalantly.
Emily said, "So what if he doesn't come? What's the big deal?"
"It's not that," Andrew explained, "He was the one who suggested coming over for dinner. When I saw him at school this morning, I told him you were preparing a lot of dishes, and he seemed happy. But when he answered my call just now, his attitude suddenly changed. I'm worried that my promotion might have fallen through again, and that's why he feels awkward coming over."
Emily retorted, "You're asking me? How would I know?"
Andrew chuckled awkwardly, "Hehe, I mean, could you call him and ask?"
Emily glanced at Henry again, who had finished his soup and was waiting for her to serve the rice.
Emily snapped, "If you can't ask, why should I be able to?"
Henry suggested, "Since you're a woman and have a good relationship with Avery, why don't you ask her?"
"You want me to ask her why Jason isn't coming for dinner? Don't forget, you didn't invite Avery!"
"I meant you could ask about my promotion."
"Fine, but it's mealtime now, and they're probably together. I'll ask this afternoon."
"Okay, please don't forget."
After hanging up, Emily served Henry the rice and asked, "Did you talk to Jason?"
Henry asked back, "Why would you think I talked to him?"
Emily switched the rice bowl and soup bowl, "It seems there's nothing you wouldn't dare to do. But let me remind you, don't forget to give me an explanation."
Henry suddenly asked, "Did you really have something with Jason...?"
Before he could finish, Emily gave him a cold, sideways glance.
Henry quickly smiled, "I'm just asking. If you say no, I believe you!"
Emily asked back, "What if I said yes?"
Henry replied, "I wouldn't believe it!"
"In that case, you can't give me an explanation. So why wait?"
Henry's face turned red, "I'm still undergoing treatment!"
Emily asked, "Will you kneel after the treatment?"
Henry chuckled without answering.
Emily imitated his laugh, then asked, "There's something I don't understand. Since you dislike Andrew so much, wouldn't it be good for you if I had someone else outside?"
Henry lowered his head, not speaking, and picked up the spoon to eat.
Emily understood that his concern about her and Jason wasn't out of loyalty to Andrew.
Considering what he had just implied, it was clear that Henry's attitude towards her wasn't because of Andrew, so Emily saw through his intentions.
She took Henry's bowl, grabbed the spoon from him, and sat by the bed to feed him.
She kept her eyes on Henry, who didn't dare to meet her gaze, staring only at the bowl.
"What did you do to Jason?" Emily asked.
"Nothing," Henry replied, "I just told him to stay away from you!"
"So what are you planning to do? Not going back to work at the school?"
Henry said, "I bought the Violet Bar."
Emily's eyes widened, "Where did you get so much money?"
"It wasn't stolen or robbed."
Emily put the spoon into the bowl, took Henry's hand, and said, "Henry, just live a stable life from now on. Don't get involved with gangs. If the school doesn't work out, I'll find someone to help you get another job."
Emily understood that Henry must have used the information on those hard drives to force Erick to give up the Violet Bar.
Erick wouldn't take it lying down.
Henry's ability to get 600,000 from Charles proved he was ruthless, but Emily didn't want him to get involved in the violent underworld.
To Emily, this gesture was perhaps out of natural kindness and an awareness of Henry's feelings for her, an expression of genuine care.
But Henry was deeply moved by her soft touch!
Despite his ability to control his facial expressions, the warm rush through his heart and body made him swallow hard.
He wanted to hold Emily's hand tightly, as if holding her heart.
But Emily was married to Andrew. Would his impulsive advances make her struggle with her moral boundaries, causing her endless distress and pain?
