Chapter 135: Awkward

After dinner, Henry went straight to the guest bedroom, closed the door, and lay on the bed, seemingly fiddling with his phone. In reality, his ears were perked up, listening to the sounds outside. At this moment, his heart was completely tied to Emily's every move. Even the sound of Emily cleaning the dishes outside painted a beautiful picture in his mind.

Emily sensed Henry's restlessness and knew the reason behind it, which put her in a particularly good mood. As she cleaned the dishes in the kitchen, she began to hum a tune.

Andrew, sitting on the sofa, was stunned, his eyes widening as he looked towards the kitchen. In his memory, Emily had never hummed a tune before. He then glanced towards the guest bedroom door, feeling that something was off.

Andrew got up and went to the kitchen, walking up behind Emily as usual and said, "You know..."

With a clatter, the bowl in Emily's hand fell into the sink.

"What are you doing?" Emily snapped, "Why do you walk so quietly? You scared me!"

Seeing Emily's angry face, Andrew felt a pang of frustration. In the past, when he walked loudly at home, Emily would complain that he was too noisy and told him to be quieter. Now, having gotten used to walking quietly, he scared her, and her annoyed expression made him feel that the distance between them was growing, making them feel almost like strangers.

Of course, Andrew didn't think all these changes were due to Henry's arrival. He felt the more significant issue was that they hadn't had a normal marital relationship for a long time, coupled with his recent cowardly behavior, which had completely disappointed Emily.

Andrew stood there looking dejected. When Emily, still angry, turned back to continue washing the dishes, he cautiously asked, "Do you think what Henry said earlier is true? If he really threatened Jason, do you think I still have a chance for a promotion this year?"

If what Henry said was true, Emily also felt it was a bit excessive. Although she knew Henry wouldn't lie, it seemed like he was just trying to provoke Andrew at the dinner table, so she wasn't sure. She planned to ask Henry about it later, but for now, she said to Andrew, "You should ask him about it. How would I know?"

Andrew forced a laugh, "I've already told you about my situation with him. Over the past few days, his misunderstanding of me has only deepened. If I go ask him, it will definitely be awkward."

Emily suddenly asked, "Why did Jason suddenly want to come to our house for dinner, and why did he insist on coming alone?"

"I told you, he didn't want to alert anyone else, and he's tired of eating out. He wanted to try your cooking."

Emily asked again, "I've heard some rumors that Jason has his eye on me and is using your promotion to make a move. Do you know about this?"

Andrew was startled, "That can't be true, can it? Sure, you're very beautiful and excellent; any man would have thoughts about you. I'm lucky to have you! But Jason shouldn't be like that. First, you're best friends with his wife, and second, we've been colleagues for a long time. If he had any ideas about you, wouldn't he have made a move long ago?"

Emily's question was a test to see if Andrew knew anything. His feigned ignorance made her hesitate, unsure if he was aware or not.

"Alright, I'll ask Henry about it later."

Andrew immediately smiled, "Be strategic about it. I'll take a shower and then go for a walk. You should ask him quickly, and then I can decide whether to call Jason."

Emily didn't respond, continuing to wash the dishes. Andrew took this as tacit approval. He quickly found some clean clothes and went to the bathroom to shower. After his shower, he stood at the guest bedroom door and called out to Emily, "Emily, I'm going for a walk. Do you need anything from the supermarket?"

Emily, who was mopping the floor, replied, "Whatever."

Andrew glanced at the guest bedroom door and then walked out. Although he wasn't sure if there was anything between Henry and Emily, he knew Henry disliked him. He had a feeling that once he left, Henry wouldn't stay locked in his room.

Hearing the front door close, Henry felt a mix of anxiety and excitement. However, he didn't want to appear too eager by immediately coming out, which would make his intentions too obvious.

Once Andrew left, Emily's mood also improved significantly. She started humming again as she mopped the floor, and when she reached the guest bedroom door, she hesitated for a moment before deciding to knock. Instead, she turned the door handle and pushed it open.

When Emily reached the door, Henry, lying on the bed, felt his heart race. He expected her to knock but was surprised when she simply pushed the door open. Emily was a principled person who would normally knock, especially after their knees had touched under the table. Her entering without knocking made Henry feel like she didn't see him as an outsider. But did she see him as a relative or something more?

Henry was conflicted. If Emily maintained her marital relationship with Andrew, he wouldn't become her lover. He wanted to spend his life with Emily, not treat her as a temporary fling like Victoria suggested.

Emily glanced at Henry, who was pretending to look at his phone, but she noticed the slight blush on his face. This made her a bit nervous too. She scolded herself internally: What am I doing? Why am I feeling guilty?

"Henry," Emily started, trying to make conversation, "It's not good for your health to lie in bed right after eating. You should go for a walk, even if it's just around the neighborhood."

Henry responded with a simple "Hmm" and quickly got up from the bed. As Emily moved in with the mop, he hurried out, and they awkwardly tried to avoid each other. Moving too quickly, they ended up colliding, with Emily stumbling back. Henry, thinking she might fall, quickly grabbed her by the waist, pulling her into his arms.

They both glanced at each other, surprised to find the other doing the same, and their faces turned red simultaneously.

"Are you okay?" Henry asked, trying to cover his embarrassment.

Emily shook her head with a smile. Henry then realized he was still holding her waist and quickly let go, heading out of the room.
