Chapter 199: What Did She Want from You?
To Henry, if Isabelle was like an anime and Ruby like a magazine, then Emily was undoubtedly a world-renowned classic. From washing clothes and sheets to mopping the floor and wiping tables, and then to washing vegetables and cooking in the kitchen, Emily was incredibly efficient. She was the kind of woman who could handle both the living room and the kitchen, a strong woman and a virtuous wife and mother.
In Henry's eyes, such a woman was a rare find, someone you absolutely shouldn't miss if you encountered her.
After cleaning the house, Emily went to the kitchen to prepare the dishes. Henry hesitated for a moment but then followed her into the kitchen. Remembering how Avery reacted when he hovered around her in the kitchen, not only did she not scold him, but she also put her arm around him and even turned back to kiss him. He wondered what Emily's reaction would be if he did the same.
Henry stood right behind Emily, no more than five centimeters apart. Emily saw a shadow approaching her from the reflection on the kitchen wall. Using her peripheral vision, she glanced around but didn’t see Henry, knowing he was directly behind her.
She thought about turning around to ask what Henry was doing but decided against it. She could faintly hear Henry’s breathing near her left ear, which made her a bit nervous. She both hoped and feared that Henry would suddenly embrace her from behind. If that happened, she wasn't sure how she would react.
Henry stood right behind her, inhaling the subtle, elegant fragrance from her body, and felt a strong physical reaction. If he hadn't experienced Ruby, Emily at this moment would have been irresistible to him. He would have had no other choice but to tightly embrace her.
As for Emily's reaction, Henry, in his current state of arousal, didn't care. However, he had already learned from Ruby how mysterious women could be. So now, his feelings for Emily were more about curiosity regarding how she differed from Ruby.
Although this curiosity made Henry almost lose control, it wasn't enough to make him act recklessly. Emily hadn't noticed Henry's psychological changes. If she knew that his thoughts were influenced by another married woman like herself, Ruby, she would probably regret it deeply.
Henry resisted the urge to hug her but several times almost reached out to touch her buttocks, even spreading his hand wide before ultimately deciding against it. After a long while, Emily noticed Henry hadn't made any move. She realized he wanted to but was afraid, likely because of her relationship with Andrew. She understood that being a married woman was a barrier Henry couldn't cross.
Thinking about it, she also had no clear direction. Should she be Henry's lover for life, or should she divorce Andrew and marry Henry? Marrying him would be the best outcome, but he was an unmarried young man. Although she was still a virgin, she was technically a married woman.
If Henry found out the truth later and didn't mind that she lived with Andrew for so long, how would others perceive it? Could he withstand the external pressure?
With these thoughts, Emily suddenly felt calm. She turned around and saw Henry staring at her, blushing. Pretending not to notice, she said, "What are you doing here? Go watch TV. If you don't like TV, set the table. The food will be ready soon."
"Oh."
Henry reached for the bowls in the cupboard, deliberately brushing against Emily. Emily didn't avoid him. Brushing against her gave Henry a strange thrill, though he didn't know that Emily felt the same.
During dinner, they didn't sit opposite each other but next to the corner of the table. With only two people eating, neither found it odd. Sitting so close, their knees touched under the small table in Victoria's house. Henry deliberately moved his leg closer to Emily's, and she didn't pull away, acting as if nothing had happened. They ate with their legs touching, a sensation that Henry found quite satisfying.
Henry played a little trick, placing his chopsticks on the edge of the table while scooping soup with a spoon. His elbow nudged the chopsticks, causing them to fall. Emily started to get up to fetch new chopsticks, but Henry said there were napkins on the table and bent down to pick up the chopsticks, deliberately placing his hand on Emily's thigh.
Emily knew he did it on purpose but didn't say anything. Later, Emily accidentally dropped her chopsticks too. As she bent down to retrieve them, she almost fell, her hand landing on Henry's thigh. Blushing, she worried Henry might think she did it on purpose, but Henry didn't. He was sure Emily's action wasn't intentional.
After a while, Henry asked, "By the way, are you still sleeping in my room?"
Emily glanced at him, "Stop talking nonsense. When did I ever sleep in your room?"
"Oh, I meant, are you still sleeping in the guest room at home?"
It was clear he was asking if Emily and Andrew were still sleeping separately. Emily didn't answer directly but said, "Oh, I forgot to tell you, Andrew's promotion to associate professor went through today. The principal spoke to him personally. Although it wasn't explicitly stated, Andrew could tell that a key member of the review committee had been opposed to him. He figured out it was probably Jason and ranted about it at home."
Henry shook his head. He knew Andrew was the type to remember who wronged him but never acknowledged those who helped him. For instance, Henry had helped him this time, but Andrew would likely consider it his own achievement, believing that if Jason hadn't interfered, he would have been promoted two years ago.
If Emily hadn't mentioned it, Henry wouldn't have known.
"There's something else. Isabelle came to see me today."
Henry asked, puzzled, "What did she want from you?"
