Chapter 94: It's You
As Henry felt the car from behind hit him, he knew he couldn't dodge in time. He jumped straight up, the car's hood hitting his buttocks, sending him flipping backward.
Henry had been walking along the roadside, and the car had swerved from the road towards him. After hitting him, it swerved back onto the road, flinging Henry away.
Henry landed unscathed, realizing someone had set him up. He was about to pounce when he saw a well-dressed, elegant woman emerge from the clothing store.
He hesitated, and the car from the opposite lane sped towards him again.
The car was moving too fast to dodge easily.
Henry leaped into the air, and amid gasps and screams from the onlookers, the car sped under his legs.
He landed steadily again.
As he turned to look at the car, he saw the elegant woman heading towards the sports car.
Seeing the onlookers' attention on Henry, the woman glanced at him.
Unaware of what had happened and not knowing the onlookers were staring at Henry in shock, she noticed the two cars speeding away and assumed something had gone wrong with them.
She got into the sports car without a second glance.
If not for her, Henry might have caught one of the cars.
But watching the woman get into the car, Henry stood frozen, watching the sports car drive away.
The onlookers felt a sense of relief.
Some marveled at his skills, others thought he was lucky.
Some scoffed, muttering curses, thinking he was a reckless internet streamer and looking for hidden cameras.
Henry glanced at the onlookers, then quickly turned and walked towards another street leading to the bar.
The image of the elegant woman kept flashing in his mind.
Not only was she well-dressed, but she also had a great figure, looking more like a fashion model than a noblewoman.
Especially when she glanced at him, he saw her stunningly beautiful face.
She seemed younger than Ruby but older than Avery, around thirty-five or thirty-six, not looking like his mother at all!
Twenty-four years ago, how old would she have been?
And this sports car was too new. Twenty-some years ago, who in Harbor Springs could afford such a car?
He thought his adoptive mother must have misremembered the license plate.
Or maybe the woman he saw wasn't the owner of the car.
If she were the owner's sister, she could be his aunt!
If she was this beautiful, then his mother...
The more Henry thought, the more confused he became. Then he remembered the two cars that had tried to hit him.
Both cars were old and unmarked, clearly a premeditated attack!
He had no enemies in Harbor Springs, so who else but Charles's men?
Henry immediately called Charles, asking, "Charles, can't handle it openly, so you resort to underhanded tactics?"
Charles, on his way to the hospital, was puzzled by Henry's call and asked, "What do you mean?"
"I was just attacked by two unmarked cars. If it wasn't your men, who else could it be?"
Charles frowned, "Henry, I might have been defeated by you, but I'm not that low.
Ask around Harbor Springs about my reputation.
If I wanted to settle yesterday's score, I'd challenge you again, not resort to such tactics!"
Henry thought that made sense and said, "Alright, I believe you. But you should ask your men if they acted on their own, like Zack, out of resentment."
Charles couldn't be sure and said, "Alright, I'll ask now and get back to you by this morning."
Henry said, "Charles, I believe you're a man of your word. But if it turns out your men did it, don't lie to me.
You know there are cameras everywhere, and finding two unmarked cars won't be hard."
Charles said, "Don't worry, if it was my men, I'll give you an explanation!"
Henry put his phone away and was about to turn when he saw a young man running towards him, looking terrified, with someone chasing him.
What's going on? Is Harbor Springs this chaotic?
Henry saw it was Ella in uniform chasing the man.
The young man hesitated, seeing Henry in his path, but Henry suddenly stepped aside, and the man sped up.
A police car caught the fleeing man ahead.
Ella, seeing the man caught, reached Henry and felt he had intentionally stepped aside.
She thought: What's wrong with people today, not helping the police catch criminals?
She gave Henry a disdainful look and was stunned.
"It's you?" Ella recognized him and walked over, asking, "What happened? Why did you step aside? Do you know that thief?"
Henry didn't expect her to recognize him and asked, "Don't you dislike people meddling? Besides, don't you have colleagues?"
Ella knew Henry hadn't intervened because he recognized her.
She had indeed been unfriendly to him last night.
Ella sized up Henry, seeing his tall, handsome figure in the branded clothes Emily bought him, and said, "Are you a recent veteran? Didn't you learn about bravery in the military?"
This comment hurt Henry's pride.
He hadn't been aware of this until Isabelle made it clear she couldn't be with him because he was an ex-convict.
If Ella knew his real identity, how shocked and disdainful would she be?
This conversation wasn't going anywhere.
A taxi arrived, and Henry ignored Ella, getting in and leaving.
"Humph, quite the character?"
Ella felt her judgment was correct, thinking Henry was a veteran hurt by her attitude last night.
She even felt Henry's sense of justice and willingness to stand up for others might mean he was a retired police officer, possibly joining her system in the future.
She muttered, "Don't fall into my hands, or you'll regret it!"
