Chapter 29: Henry's Background.
Andrew blinked and looked at Emily.
When they came back in the afternoon, Emily had been waiting outside for Henry, full of concerns and worries for him. If treating Henry like a younger brother or even a son-in-law was understandable, considering she didn't have children of her own, it was still a drastic change.
But after returning with Henry, everything shifted. She refused to cook and instead busied herself in the kitchen when Andrew came back with groceries. Now, it seemed like she was planning to keep Henry at home for a long time. What exactly had happened in between?
Were they just playing house, or was there something more going on behind my back?
Andrew had always been timid and bookish, but not foolish. In his eyes, Emily's behavior towards Henry had been consistent, whether good or bad. But this sudden change, this inconsistency, was far from normal.
Within half a day, Emily's attitude towards Henry had undergone several drastic reversals. Henry's behavior towards Emily was also quite peculiar. Andrew was almost certain that something had happened between them, or they had reached some kind of understanding, which was definitely not in his favor.
If Emily had a relationship with Jason, he could accept it, as he benefited from it. Jason was young among his superiors and had great potential for advancement. Andrew could also leverage Jason and Emily's relationship for his own gain.
But if Emily had a relationship with Henry, besides feeling like a complete loser, Andrew couldn't see any benefits for himself. Why should he?
After much hesitation, Andrew finally asked, "Emily, did something happen between you and Henry this afternoon? I can't help but notice your constantly changing attitude towards him, which is so different from your usual self!"
Emily remained silent.
Andrew's heart sank, confirming his suspicions. If Emily didn't argue back, it meant she couldn't deny it either.
Damn it! They got together in less than a day and now they're acting in front of me, treating me like a fool?
Andrew looked at Emily, who was dragging her feet without a word, and felt a sharp pain in his heart.
What a mess! They say it's a fight between dragons and tigers, but am I just incompatible with Henry from the start?
His presence had once taken away the only love his parents had for him. And now, was he being directly betrayed by them?
"Emily," Andrew hinted, "Do you know who Henry admires the most since he was young? It's Wu Song."
Emily was taken aback.
Andrew's words reminded her of a joke Avery had made.
Emily turned around, furrowing her brows, and asked, "Andrew, what do you mean?"
Andrew forced a smile and said, "Don't you want to know why he killed someone?"
Emily snorted coldly, "Not interested!"
With that, she turned around and continued dragging her feet.
She knew that if she didn't listen to what Andrew had to say, he would say it anyway.
Andrew sighed, "In fact, my mother was very beautiful, at least compared to the rough women in the countryside. She had a slender figure, fair skin, and delicate features, like a village beauty."
Emily believed that Andrew was not lying.
Because Andrew himself was quite handsome, probably resembling his mother.
Andrew continued, "My father was the most educated person in the village at that time, but unfortunately, after years of hard work, he didn't get into college, not even a vocational school. He stayed at home studying every day and didn't do any farm work, relying entirely on my grandparents for support. Both my grandparents were in poor health and passed away not long after each other.
My father's family and my mother's family lived close to each other. My mother liked my father, so my maternal grandparents married her to my father. Later, my maternal grandparents also passed away. My parents didn't know much about farming, so they sent me to live with relatives while they went out to work. But my father fell ill at the construction site, so they both returned to their hometown.
I was only 6 years old that year, and they brought Henry, who was less than a year old, back with them."
Emily stopped her work, and though she didn't turn around, it was clear she was listening intently.
"My mother told me that Henry's biological mother was probably a prostitute or someone who was financially supported. After giving birth to Henry, she didn't want him, so she gave him to my mother. My mother didn't want the villagers to know, so she said she found him in a trash can. At that time, people in the village thought Henry had some congenital disease or disability. Otherwise, how could someone abandon such a fair and chubby boy?"
Upon hearing this, Emily felt that Henry's background was quite tragic.
She quickened the pace of mopping the floor, then cleaned and hung the mop, turned on the TV, and sat on the sofa to watch.
