Chapter 95: Zack's Accomplice
As Ella was about to leave, she received a call from Matthew, the deputy captain, saying someone at the hospital reported many injured people from last night, likely from a large brawl.
Strangely, only one side had many injuries, including gunshot wounds, while the other side had none.
Matthew had gone to the hospital last night and saw Henry and Zack, but they denied any involvement, claiming they were attacked by unknown assailants on a dark, unlit road.
Matthew suspected it was the result of a gang fight.
The problem was that Charles's side had many injuries, but there was no news of the other side.
Matthew knew they were Charles's men and couldn't imagine any force in Harbor Springs capable of doing this to Charles's men without suffering any injuries themselves.
After leaving the hospital last night, Matthew checked all the city's hospitals and contacted colleagues in various towns but found no other injured people.
Matthew knew Charles and Erick were close. Could their injuries be related to something at the bar?
If someone could injure Charles's men this badly and they were hiding the truth, there were two possibilities: either the other side was too powerful, or they were planning a large-scale revenge.
Either way, it was a major security concern for Harbor Springs, so Matthew planned to talk to Erick.
He called Ella for two reasons.
First, it would be easier for Ella to gather information from the bar staff.
Second, Matthew liked Ella and had heard she was Erick's girlfriend, so he wanted to confirm this.
If they were engaged but hadn't had a wedding, Ella would likely avoid the investigation.
If they were just dating, Matthew could use this investigation to understand their relationship better.
Of course, he hoped the rumors were false and Ella had no relationship with Erick.
Ella agreed without hesitation, "Matthew, I'll head to the bar now and wait for you!"
When Henry arrived at the bar, Erick wasn't there, but Charles called.
"Hello, Henry?" Charles said, "I've asked my men, and they don't know about this.
You mentioned it might be one of my men acting on their own, and I worried about that too. But if it were one of them, they wouldn't lie to me."
Henry said, "Good. If it was your men, we could discuss how to resolve it.
Since it wasn't your men, I'll keep looking.
But if I find out it was your men, no explanations will matter, and I'll take my revenge."
With that, Henry hung up.
Henry and Zack saw Charles's frustrated expression and knew Henry's tone was harsh.
Henry asked, "Charles, what's wrong?"
Charles put his phone away and sighed, "When did anyone dare talk to me like that?"
Henry and Zack exchanged glances.
Zack said, "Charles, hold your anger. Once Henry and I recover, we'll take him down!
No matter how tough he is, he's just one man."
Charles shook his head, "This kid is different. We fought for a place to call our own; fighting was just a means to an end.
But this kid seems born to kill; every move is to kill.
You guys are my brothers, so I don't mind saying this. Yesterday, after he ambushed me, he didn't negotiate; he was ready to kill me.
In the past, I never hesitated to face death, but with a gun to my forehead, I thought of my daughter.
If I die, what about Mengmeng?"
Henry and Zack didn't have kids but understood Charles's feelings. They didn't know that, facing death, Charles also thought of his wife Natalie, his parents, and his wealth.
Henry said, "Charles, don't lose heart. Once Zack and I recover, we'll plan.
Next time, we either don't act or kill him!"
Charles nodded, "We must. With you both hurt, I can't let this go.
But now's not the time, so keep your men in check. Don't provoke him. If something happens, money won't solve it."
Henry and Zack nodded.
Charles asked, "Are you sure it wasn't our men today?"
Henry and Zack replied in unison, "No!"
Charles said, "We lost our weapons to him; we need new ones."
Zack said, "I found some down south. I'll get a few."
Charles nodded, "Once we have them, we'll shoot him!"
Charles then told them to rest and instructed the doctor to use the best medicine, personally arranging for other brothers to care for them.
Then he drove to town.
Zack's phone buzzed with a Facebook message from Nathan, one of the top four bosses and Samuel's subordinate: "Damn, that kid's lucky. He dodged both cars!"
Zack broke into a cold sweat: "Are your men okay?"
Nathan replied: "Relax, they got away. It won't trace back to you."
Zack replied: "Thanks, Brother Nathan. I owe you!"
Nathan replied: "Just letting you know. Don't worry, I'll handle him."
Henry sat in the bar's lobby, waiting for Erick when he saw a beautiful woman get out of a car and enter a teahouse across the street.
She reminded him of someone, and he smiled, thinking he was mistaken or daydreaming.
Just then, Erick's car parked outside, blocking his view.
