Chapter 132: Seeing Through

Henry took out his phone as he walked towards the nearby sofa.
Two police officers, worried he might escape, were about to follow him, but Matthew stopped them with a glance.
If it were anyone else, they wouldn't have paid attention to them at this moment.
But Victoria was different. She immediately invited everyone to sit on the other sofa and had the waiter bring fruit, drinks, and tea.
Whether they drank it or not wasn't important; what mattered was the gesture.
Henry glanced back and had to admit that Victoria was indeed capable.
Henry sat on the sofa and sent a WeChat message to Ruby: "Sis, first I was attacked in the office by suppliers with thugs, and I fought back. Just now, at the hospital entrance, dozens of thugs attacked me, and I retaliated. Now, Matthew from the police station is here with about ten people, asking me to go to the precinct for an investigation. He didn't say it was about this, but I can't think of anything else."
Worried she might not notice, Henry was about to initiate a video call, let it ring once, and then hang up. But Ruby replied instantly: "Okay."
After sending the message, Henry had just put away his phone when Victoria brought him a cup of tea and whispered, "If the person you contacted doesn't work out, I can find someone."
Henry nodded, took the cup, and said, "Remember, I only drink plain water."
"Got it!" Victoria asked again, "Is the person you contacted unable to take calls?"
"No, I sent a WeChat message."
Matthew and Ella had been watching Henry. Seeing him fiddle with his phone without making a call and then putting it away and sitting there nonchalantly, they exchanged glances.
If Henry had someone to call, it would definitely be someone high up, and he would call for help. They didn't think he would send a message, thinking he was just stalling for time.
After waiting a few more minutes and seeing no reaction from Henry, Matthew turned to walk towards him when his phone rang.
Seeing the number, his expression changed, and he quickly stepped to the door to answer.
Ella and the other police officers realized that the caller must be someone important, given Matthew's reaction.
No one initially thought Henry was behind it, as they hadn't seen him make a call. They assumed it was a higher-up calling Matthew for something else.
Only Ella suspected it might be Henry's doing but couldn't figure out who Henry could have contacted.
And through WeChat? Anyone with a bit of status wouldn't act on a WeChat message from him.
After a while, the people sitting on the other sofa received a message from Matthew and immediately got up and left.
A moment later, Matthew walked back in, smiling at Henry, "Henry, sorry to bother you. We have new developments in the case, so we won't trouble you anymore. If we need anything in the future, we hope you'll continue to support our work."
Ella and Victoria were stunned by Matthew's sudden change in attitude towards Henry.
They couldn't figure out who Henry had contacted.
Henry stood up and said, "Matthew, no need to be so polite. You're here to protect our business. If you need anything, just call, and I'll do my best to cooperate."
"Thank you very much."
Matthew extended his hand, and Henry shook it.
Matthew then signaled to Ella and walked out.
Ella gave Henry a puzzled look before following Matthew.
Anyone else would be ecstatic and eager to flatter Henry, even asking which leader he had called to make the police leave so quickly. But Victoria acted as if nothing had happened, quietly handing Henry the Desert Eagle and leaving without a word.
One might think Victoria knew her current role and wouldn't pry into Henry's business, but Henry saw it as professional competence.
Thinking back to the night in the private room when Erick and Charles said nothing, and Victoria proactively called Emily, it was clear she could instantly grasp her leader's intentions and was absolutely loyal.
Her act of hiding the gun for Henry just now further demonstrated this.
"Victoria," Henry called out, "Doesn't Bryan mind you working?"
Victoria smiled bitterly, "You know why he married me. Do you think he cares what I do?"
Henry asked, "In that case, why did you marry him? Just for the money? You have more money now than most people in your position."
Victoria smiled bitterly, "If you were a man, given a chance to play around, would you prefer a prostitute or a wealthy man's ex-wife, even if she's divorced?"
Henry finally understood. If Bryan married her to rebel against his family, Victoria knew the marriage was just a tool for him, yet she jumped into the pit because she needed a title, even without a wedding night.
In society, she would be known as Bryan's ex-wife, Cole's former daughter-in-law.
Even if she had to work as a hostess, clients would flock to her.
Moreover, she could use this title to do more of what she wanted.
In this sense, she truly grasped the essence of the famous Western saying: there are only eternal interests, no eternal friends.
For Victoria, there was no eternal love, only eternal benefits and use.
Henry asked, "Then why did you choose to come back to work?"
Victoria replied, "Unless I leave Harbor Springs and the society I'm familiar with, I must cling to a powerful figure.
I've bet on you, and you will be the top boss in Harbor Springs!
So you can doubt me, guard against me, but I've decided to entrust my worthless life to you!
And you should see, who else in Harbor Springs would I risk my life for to betray you?
Erick?
Bryan?"
Henry nodded, said nothing more, and turned to leave.
For someone like Victoria, who had seen through life and the way women survive in society, there was no need for too many words.
The rest would depend on their future understanding of each other.
