Chapter 134: Promotion

Henry unlocked the door with his key and saw the study door open, knowing Andrew was home, dampening his mood.
He had planned to greet Emily in the kitchen but thought it would be awkward to call her sister-in-law without acknowledging Andrew in their home.
Henry plopped on the living room sofa and sent a WeChat message to Ruby: "Big sister, thank you!"
Ruby replied instantly: "Little brother, how will you thank me?"
Henry called her big sister out of respect and gratitude. Ruby's call had given him much face today.
Henry understood that having Ruby as a backer meant he had a chance to rise quickly, even as an ex-convict.
But Ruby's "little brother" carried a lot of meaning, suggesting more than just using him for profit.
Especially with her "how will you thank me," which had a teasing tone.
Thinking about her so-called test in the hotel and her attitude today, Henry, who had never had any improper thoughts about her, gave in.
Victoria's words had greatly influenced him.
Henry had always been simple about relationships, wanting to find a loving woman to marry for life.
Knowing his adoptive mother and Joshua's relationship, he despised improper relationships.
But Victoria's perspective changed his view on relationships.
Though he hadn't been with any woman, Victoria's analogy of relationships to using a restroom was vivid.
Why care so much about the urinal for a simple act?
Maintaining the home urinal was normal, but what about public ones?
He thought, treating Ruby as a temporary solution, using her to solve his immediate problems, was just like using a public urinal.
Henry replied: "I'll listen to you, big sister!"
Ruby, sitting in her car, smiled. She knew today's call had shown Henry her value.
Ruby asked: "Really?"
Henry smiled and replied: "Really!"
Andrew suddenly emerged from the study to use the bathroom, seeing Henry on the sofa. He said, "You're back," then poked his head into the kitchen, telling Emily, "Henry's back, no need to take food."
He then went into the bathroom.
Emily saw Henry with his phone and smiled at him.
She walked to him and complained, "You didn't say you were back. I was about to pack food."
Henry smiled again.
Emily said, "Go wash your hands for dinner!"
Henry didn't usually wash his hands before eating, but he didn't mind Emily's request, hoping she would take care of him forever.
With Andrew still in the bathroom, Henry went to the kitchen to wash his hands.
The small kitchen made them bump into each other face-to-face.
Emily blushed slightly, glancing at Henry, thinking he did it on purpose.
Henry, feeling his heart race from her shy glance, quickly focused on the faucet, wanting to explain he didn't do it on purpose.
At dinner, Andrew and Emily sat facing each other, with Henry between them.
Both Henry and Emily were lost in thought, eating silently, while Andrew was anxious about Jason's no-show, fearing his promotion was doomed.
Feeling the silence, Andrew tried to make conversation: "Jason's not coming tonight, so my promotion is probably off. Sigh!"
Emily was about to speak when Henry said expressionlessly, "Don't worry, your promotion is secure!"
Both Andrew and Emily looked at him.
Henry kept eating without elaborating.
Andrew wanted to ask but didn't dare, so he signaled Emily, who kicked Henry under the table: "Hey, why is it secure?"
The kick reminded Henry of the last accidental leg touch, making him feel excited again.
This time, though less intense, Henry felt thrilled.
He controlled his expression and coldly said, "I talked to him."
Andrew and Emily exchanged glances.
Emily nudged Henry again, asking, "What did you say?"
Henry kept eating, "I told him two things: First, if Andrew doesn't get promoted, I'll kill him."
Andrew and Emily stared at him.
"Second, if he dares to have any ill intentions towards Emily, I'll make him wish he were dead!"
Andrew looked awkwardly at Emily, who glared at Henry, asking, "When did he have ill intentions towards me?"
Henry didn't answer, intentionally nudging his knee towards Emily's, which immediately touched hers.
Feeling excited, Henry noticed Emily didn't move her knee, letting it rest against his.
Emily initially thought Henry was hinting at something but realized he just wanted to touch her leg, making her heart race.
Fearing Andrew might notice, Emily also kept her head down, eating.
Andrew was puzzled.
He expected Emily and Henry to argue but found them silent, eating with their heads down.
Andrew glanced at Emily, then at Henry, then at his bowl, confused, and finally started eating.
For Henry, the feeling of his knee touching Emily's under the table was more thrilling than touching Isabelle.
He realized that despite the many beauties in Harbor Springs, only Emily made his heart race and blood boil at first sight.
At that moment, Emily felt like a hundred little rabbits were hopping in her heart...
