Chapter 68: Are You Afraid?
Charles, experienced in the underworld, accepted Henry and Zack's advice and decided not to use his own car.
He prepared two SUVs.
His car led, another followed, with ten taxis in between, and the rest on motorcycles.
Anyone in Harbor Springs knew this was a big gang fight. The southern suburbs would see a bloody battle tonight, and tomorrow everyone would know who won.
Usually, gang fights are about territory, aiming to overpower the opponent without killing, unless by accident.
But this time was different.
Charles sought revenge and to defend his honor. He didn't want to kill, but Henry, armed with two guns, would.
Charles planned to kill Henry.
He believed his men would take the blame for him.
When leaving, Charles didn't sit in the first or last car but in a middle taxi.
Experienced taxi drivers knew this meant trouble, having seen it before.
Such a convoy meant a fight. At the scene, they'd be watched and not allowed to leave.
If the convoy won, they'd get paid. If they lost, the trip was wasted.
Drivers had to endure it; these thugs could easily cause trouble.
When the convoy appeared, Brandon called Henry, saying Charles's car led.
Henry smirked, thinking Charles had guts and style.
Henry told Isabelle he could make Charles compromise without killing, but he didn't believe it.
He knew Charles was tough and had to be crippled at least, if not killed.
To establish himself in Harbor Springs, he had to cripple or kill Charles.
Henry felt no attachment to life, having been abandoned at birth and losing his adoptive parents.
Andrew was no brother, and they had unresolved hatred, unknown to Andrew.
Seeing Andrew at the prison gate disgusted Henry. If not for Emily's beauty, he wouldn't have come to Harbor Springs.
Though pursuing Isabelle, he still liked Emily.
Holding Isabelle, touching her body, gave Henry joy, but he imagined Emily when kissing Isabelle.
Despite their differences, Henry found satisfaction in this fantasy.
If Henry had any attachment, it was to Emily, not Isabelle, a surprise to all.
Thus, he left the hospital after dinner, fearing Emily's persuasion.
If Emily spoke, he couldn't refuse!
Harbor Springs meant nothing to Henry. He wanted to establish himself for Emily.
He didn't want to live cowardly, but be a man in Emily's eyes!
When Henry reached the kiln and got Brandon's call about Charles's convoy, he remembered the red sports car and wondered: Was the owner really his birth mother?
Charles's convoy arrived at seven, in the dark.
There were no streetlights on the road to the kiln.
Henry hid in the grass by the cement beside the kiln.
He had two plans: ambush Charles when he got out or when he got back in.
Jonathan and Daniel hid about fifty meters ahead.
As agreed, they'd fire in the air if there was any action, making Charles's men think they were surrounded.
Brandon, after calling, felt nervous, unsure of the outcome.
Seeing so many cars, he felt scared and started counting.
When he saw Charles in the sixth taxi, throwing a cigarette out the window, he recognized Charles's profile!
Brandon panicked: It's over!
He knew Henry's plan. If they waited for Charles to return, fine. But if Henry saw Charles's car stop and attacked when the door opened, it would be a disaster!
Charles had a gun.
If Charles was captured, his men wouldn't move.
But if his men were captured, Charles would shoot without hesitation, emptying his gun into Henry, making him a sieve!
Brandon tried calling Henry, but his phone was off.
He called Jonathan and Daniel, but remembered Henry had them turn off their phones for caution.
At that moment, Brandon found unexpected courage and rushed forward on his bike.
