Chapter 139: A Night for Three

Andrew took a walk outside for a while and suddenly thought that staying out too long might give Emily and Henry an opportunity to get closer.

That night, Emily had gone to sleep in the guest room, and the next morning, Henry had come out of the guest room.

When Andrew returned to the apartment, he found the living room and kitchen in complete darkness.

Oh no, could they be...

Andrew opened the door noisily and muttered loudly, saying the door lock seemed to have a problem. He opened and closed the door several times, making a show of it. When he looked around, the rooms were silent.

This was Andrew’s cowardly side. Even if he suspected Emily and Henry of having an affair, he didn’t dare confront them directly; he just wanted to scare them a little.

He couldn’t afford to provoke Henry.

As for Emily, he didn’t want to give her up.

He didn’t turn on the lights and took a few steps forward, noticing light coming from under the guest room door. He cleared his throat and listened, but there was no sound from inside.

He glanced at the master bedroom door and saw light coming from under it too. He went over and pushed the door open, finding Emily lying on her side on the bed, engrossed in reading a novel on her phone, with no sign of Henry.

“Oh,” Andrew said, “I thought no one was home, that you both went out.”

Emily didn’t respond.

Andrew sat down, leaning on Emily’s arm, inhaling her scent, and asked, “Honey, how did it go?”

Emily pushed him away and sat up, “What do you mean?”

“Henry’s situation! Oh, did he really threaten Jason?”

Emily continued reading her novel, glancing at Andrew from the corner of her eye, “I didn’t ask him, but I did call Jason directly.”

Andrew perked up, feeling both excited and nervous, “What did he say?”

“He didn’t say much, just asked me to meet him at the Harbor Springs Hotel tomorrow night.”

Andrew was stunned, “What? At a hotel?”

“Yes,” Emily glanced at Andrew, “He said if I agreed, he’d book a room.”

“What did you say?”

“I agreed!” Emily said, then resumed reading her novel.

This was Henry’s idea. He believed that after hearing this, Andrew would remain silent, neither suspecting Jason’s ulterior motives nor warning Emily to be cautious. As for stopping Emily, that was out of the question!

Emily didn’t believe it. She knew Andrew was cowardly but not stupid. Jason inviting her to a hotel clearly had bad intentions. Even a market vendor would know that. How could Andrew not?

So, after saying this, she expected Andrew to explode in anger, maybe even scold her for being foolish. How could a man inviting a woman to a hotel have good intentions? The internet was full of jokes about directors and actresses meeting in hotels to discuss scripts.

However, after hearing Emily’s words, Andrew was silent for a long time, just looking at her, contemplating the truth of her words.

Emily felt disappointed. She believed that as a husband, hearing such words from his wife, whether true or not, should provoke a strong reaction. Even if it was just a test, any husband would likely react angrily.

But Andrew’s reaction wasn’t enough to prove Henry’s judgment correct.

Emily continued reading and said, “I didn’t want to agree, but I saw how much you wanted this promotion and were thinking about the school villa. We’re as good as anyone in terms of work and conduct. Especially you, recognized as a promising young lecturer. If the promotion doesn’t happen soon, it might never happen. Considering Henry’s impulsiveness, I thought I’d apologize to Jason at the hotel tomorrow, hoping for his forgiveness. Given my good relationship with Avery, he shouldn’t hold a grudge.”

Hearing this, Andrew fully believed her. After hesitating for a bit, Andrew forced a smile, “Go ahead. It’s just one night. As you said, we can’t afford to delay. Once my promotion is secured, with our joint efforts, we’ll both advance eventually. Enduring some humiliation now will pay off later.”

Oh, come on!

Saying this kind of vow only confirmed Andrew knew Jason’s intentions were bad. But for a promotion, he was willing to sacrifice his wife’s body and his own dignity as a man.

Emily suppressed her anger and asked, “What if Jason keeps pestering me afterward?”

Andrew thought: The real worry is he’ll sleep with you once and then leave, never helping us again. If he keeps pestering, he’ll have to help us with future needs.

Andrew smiled, “He won’t. As a leader, he’ll be mindful of his reputation.”

Emily smiled faintly, filled with despair for Andrew and their marriage.

Emily got up, took her pillow and blanket, and walked out.

“Emily, what are you doing?”

Without looking back, Emily said, “I didn’t call Jason.”

Andrew was shocked, thinking: I suspected she might be testing me, but she really was? Why would she test me out of the blue? Was it Henry’s idea? She won’t go to Henry’s room, will she?

Andrew followed her out, but saw Emily lying on the living room sofa, reading a novel on her phone in the dark.

Andrew wanted to explain, but he knew Emily was suppressing her anger. Approaching her now would likely provoke her. Henry was still in the guest room.

He went back to bed, slapped himself, and spent the night sleepless.

Emily was no better. Anger burned inside her, and she wanted to rush into the guest room. But she held back, not wanting Henry to look down on her. Rushing in now would be venting anger at Andrew, unrelated to her feelings for Henry. Henry wouldn’t accept such an approach.

Emily didn’t sleep well either.

Hearing the noise outside, Henry knew Andrew had been exposed and that Emily was sleeping in the living room. Andrew was thinking about Emily, Emily was thinking about Henry, and Henry was thinking about Andrew, Emily, and his future. None of them slept well.
