Chapter 172: An Attack
Henry hailed a taxi at the door, dropped his clothes at home, and then started cooking, making a simple bowl of noodles. Knowing that Emily and Andrew wouldn't be home for lunch, he stood by the window, eating and watching the Harbor Springs University campus, hoping to see Emily. He didn't see her, but he did see Avery driving to work.
Checking the time, it was already 1:30 PM. He thought, if he wanted to "accidentally" meet Avery at noon, this would be the best time. With nothing else to do, Henry decided to go to the bar. As he reached the door, he saw a crowd gathered on the road, seemingly around a traffic accident. Through the gaps between people, it looked like Avery's car was involved.
He walked over and saw Avery arguing with a woman. The woman, around forty, looked ordinary but dressed expensively, wearing gold and silver, driving a car, and giving the impression of a small business owner or boss. Their cars had collided head-on, both crossing the centerline, indicating that Avery had turned left and the woman had turned right. They were blaming each other for breaking traffic rules. Avery wanted to call the police, but the woman was calling gang members.
Henry approached, looked at their cars, and said, "It's not a big deal. The damage is minor, maybe a few hundred bucks. Is this worth arguing over?"
Seeing Henry, Avery felt relieved. She was worried that the gang members would arrive before the police. The woman looked fierce.
Pretending not to know Henry, Avery let him mediate. The woman, who had been rolling up her sleeves and getting red-faced, suddenly smiled, "Oh, isn't this Henry?"
Henry was surprised, thinking, I've only met a few people in Harbor Springs, but she looks familiar. The woman continued, "I'm your supplier!"
Henry remembered that this was the woman who had first paid the penalty and crawled out of his office after being intimidated. He nodded and said, "Since we're all acquaintances, let's settle this. This is my sister. How about..."
Before he could finish, the woman pulled out a small stack of money from her bag and handed it to Avery, "I'm sorry, it's my fault. Use this to fix your car. If it's not enough, let me know."
She quickly got into her car, backed up, greeted Henry, and left. The crowd dispersed.
At that moment, Henry saw the girl from the bus. They didn't make eye contact; she left with the crowd before he noticed her. It was school time; maybe she was indeed a student at the affiliated school?
"Get in the car," Avery said, opening the door.
Henry wanted to follow the girl to see if she was a student, but he couldn't refuse Avery's invitation and got into the passenger seat.
"Not bad," Avery said as she drove, "You seem to know quite a few people in Harbor Springs. I thought you were new here and might need my help, but it turns out you've helped me a lot. Who was that woman?"
Henry explained, "She's the bar's supplier. She knows me, but I don't remember her well."
Avery handed Henry the stack of money, "Keep this. Return it to her later."
Henry saw it was 1,100 yuan.
"Where to?" Avery asked.
"The bar."
Avery nodded, "My son likes you. He's been asking for you to come over and play with him tonight."
Henry thought, investing in her son was paying off. "Sure, I'll come. But," he asked cautiously, "Won't Jason be scared if I suddenly show up?"
Avery calmly replied, "He's gone to the federation for training, for a week."
Henry was thrilled. This wasn't her son inviting him; it was her giving him a chance!
They soon arrived at the bar. After parking, Henry touched Avery's hand. She blushed but said nothing. After opening the door, he touched her face. She reflexively dodged slightly but didn't stop him.
"Be careful," Henry said as he got out.
Avery nodded without looking at him. Once Henry closed the door, she drove away.
Watching the car leave, Henry felt a surge of excitement, realizing his body was reacting strongly. He hummed a tune as he walked to the bar, noticing a black car slowly approaching. He had seen it parked earlier, thinking it was empty. Now it was moving.
Henry turned cautiously and saw the rear window roll down, revealing a black gun barrel aimed at him. Damn! Henry rolled to the side as two shots hit the bar's wall. The gun only had two bullets!
Henry got up and charged at the car. The gun was aimed at him again, but he thought it was a bluff and kept going. Two more shots rang out, and Henry felt the bullets graze his shoulder. Damn! Is that a Desert Eagle?
Realizing there was one bullet left, Henry didn't charge directly but circled the car. The car accelerated and sped away. Sean and two brothers rushed out, followed by Victoria. They were too late; the car had disappeared around a bend. They hadn't seen what kind of car it was.
Victoria ran to Henry, brushing off the dust and asking, "Are you okay?"
Sean's brother muttered, "Impressive, dodging four shots without cover and still chasing them."
Sean glared at him, making him lower his head.
"Boss," Sean asked, "Are you okay?"
