Chapter 133: Just a Joke
After the uniformed police officers left, they looked at their captain with puzzled expressions. Matthew just said, "Pack it up," and they all got into different cars, very curious.
Wasn't Henry just released from prison, with no social connections in Harbor Springs except for a brother who was a university lecturer?
A brother who was a university lecturer couldn't possibly have such influence. They hadn't even seen Henry make a call, and Matthew ordered them to leave.
They couldn't help but look back at the bar's entrance. They had thought the bar would close after Erick left.
From the looks of it, at least on the security front, it seemed unlikely anything would happen to it.
Ella was slightly better off. After stepping out, she asked Matthew, "Whose call was that, the boss?"
She meant the head of the precinct.
Matthew shook his head and pointed upwards.
No way, the chief of police?
Ella was stunned: Where did Henry get such connections?
Although Matthew had told everyone the operation was because the hospital had admitted dozens of knife and gunshot victims, possibly related to Henry, he only told Henry they needed his assistance for an investigation.
Such a small matter, yet the chief of police had to intervene personally? From now on, even minor issues at the bar would have to be carefully considered by the precinct.
Ella asked, "What did the higher-ups say?"
Matthew had already opened the car door. Ella wanted to ask Henry, but Matthew had only half-spoken, so she had to follow him into the car.
After starting the car, Matthew said, "The higher-ups' message is simple: Henry is a young entrepreneur. If there's solid evidence of legal violations, arrest him directly.
But asking him to cooperate with an investigation? Entrepreneurs don't have that much free time.
We're here to protect entrepreneurs, not to cause trouble. If we keep calling them to the precinct for investigations, how can they run their businesses?"
Ella knew Matthew was mimicking the higher-ups' tone, and he had a point.
"Who provided today's operation lead?"
"Ryan."
Ella said, "Him again? He also wanted me to check out the bar tonight, claiming they were forcing women into prostitution."
"Don't listen to his nonsense. He's using us as pawns!"
Matthew then activated the car's Bluetooth and called Ryan.
"Ryan, are you messing with me?"
Ryan was puzzled, "What's wrong?"
"I brought people to the Violet Bar. Do you know who called me?"
"Who?"
"The boss's boss!"
Ryan gasped. How could Erick and Quentin's information be wrong? How could such a small matter alarm the boss's boss?
Matthew continued, "Ryan, I'm just a commoner, not in the same league as you rich kids. You can play with me, but not like this!"
Ryan quickly said, "Bro, I didn't mean it. I didn't know this kid had connections.
No more nonsense, you guys worked hard. Tonight, I'll treat you all to a place of your choice!"
"And," Matthew added, "I told Ella not to go to the bar tonight. What's your deal? You're a prominent figure in Harbor Springs, and you want to use Ella?"
Ryan laughed, "What, are you pursuing her?"
"None of your business! Don't even think about using her for your dirty work again!"
Ryan laughed, "Alright, alright, you should've said so earlier!"
Ella realized Matthew made the call for her to hear, to signal he was pursuing her.
Matthew came from an ordinary family but had good qualities. He was handsome, well-educated, and diligent, becoming a police captain at thirty.
Ella didn't dislike him but felt no connection, as if they were on different wavelengths.
"Why did you call Ryan?" Ella asked.
Matthew explained, "Don't you know about the Four Young Masters of Harbor Springs?"
Ella looked puzzled, so he explained, "Ryan's father, Quinn, is a retired state leader. When his father was in office, Ryan was very popular, with many girls around him. He's the top of the Four Young Masters.
Ulysses, the owner of Earth Real Estate, is the second. His father was the first developer in Harbor Springs, now living abroad.
Victor, the owner of Sky Entertainment, is the third. His father was a former propaganda leader in Harbor Springs, who later rose to the federal level and the Ninth City. After retiring a few years ago, Victor started an entertainment company."
Matthew paused.
"And the fourth?" Ella asked.
Matthew curiously asked, "Are you really from Harbor Springs? How do you not know these things?"
Ella snorted, "Who cares about this nonsense all the time?"
Matthew realized women like Ella wouldn't know what men liked to talk about.
"The first three were famous early on. Ryan, now in the system, is the most low-key. The fourth is a newcomer, related to you."
"How so?"
Matthew laughed, "Bryan, son of Cole from The Davis Family Group, is known as the Fourth Young Master of Harbor Springs.
Isn't he your brother?"
Ella rolled her eyes, "You're funny, but not at all amusing!"
When Henry left, he thought Ella might be waiting outside, curious about how he found help so quickly.
But after looking around and seeing no police cars or Ella, he felt a bit disappointed.
Henry longed to return to his original family but didn't want them to think he was after their wealth.
He hoped to give his family a pleasant surprise!
Standing by the road, a taxi stopped, and he got in, heading to Pine Hills.
Walking along the path to the building, Henry glanced up at Isabelle's window, recalling the intimate moments with her, feeling awkward.
If he reunited with his family, facing his younger sister-in-law, who he had held all night, would be incredibly awkward.
At the building entrance, he heard the kitchen fan on the first floor and saw Emily busy at the stove through the window.
He suddenly fantasized: If this were his home, seeing Emily cooking for him every day, it would be so warm and happy!
