Chapter 103: Encounters at an ancient site

Maddie

I received a terrible hit on the head and was unconscious, but the moment I wake up, I feel the despair and fear again. I am once again captured by these evil and savage wolves who hate humans. I wake up in a dark and damp place; the walls are made of stone and I don't know if it is night or if there is just a little light.

I see moss between the stones and, beyond that, torches in the corridors. I approach the bars of my cell and see that I am alone, which doesn't seem like a good sign.

"Is anyone here? Let me out!" I scream in fear, but what I get in response is the terrified voice of someone I know.

"Maddie, is that you?" a voice asks.

"Robin?" I mutter, unable to believe it.

"Oh, Maddie, it's me!" she exclaims. I see movement ahead of me and my eyes begin to adjust to the darkness; then I see her. There's another cell in front of me, and my friend is in it. I put my hand through the bars, trying to reach her, but it's impossible.

"What are you doing here? How did you get here?" I ask as she hugs herself in a state of deep distress.

"We left the pack... It was chaos after they took you and brought you to the forest. My mate and I escaped and decided to help you," she tells me everything that happened in the pack, what they saw, and it hurts me to know that my mates are not completely well.

"And Liam?" I ask and she shakes.

"That Alpha Gerard took him. We prevented anything from happening to you, and now here you are..." she whispers in fear. At this moment I know that she is worried about her mate as much as I am about mine.

"We have to get out of here, there has to be a way."

"I've tried everything girl. I've looked everywhere, and I can't figure out how to do it. Besides, I saw where we are; it's some kind of ancient... thing, kind of temple. They dragged me down several floors until we reached this basement. There are multiple guards, and I dare say traps. There's no way out of here. 'Human, you're going to die here,' that bastard Alpha told me," she says, terrified.

"That Gerard will have a lot of explaining to do when we get out of here," I answer, coming closer to see where I am. I agree with my friend; this seems like an impossible mission.

"Did you see a little wolf on your way here?" I take the opportunity to ask her.

"No, but I heard a terrible howling," she answers, and I shudder. "I know who the wolf is. You helped him; we saw you from a distance. Liam said that means the ritual worked, that you helped, that you were his guardian, and maybe that's why they're so afraid. They cannot accept that a human could have done this," she explains, and we talk for a while. It all seems to make sense. I feel strangely proud that she and Liam think the rite worked, that I am a true Luna by merit.

Suddenly we hear a commotion in the distance and footsteps approaching. My friend and I automatically retreat. They are indeed enemy warriors and I watch in horror as they bring in a battered, injured Liam with a swollen eye.

"Liam!" my friend cries, moving closer to the bars, unable to help himself.

"Little goddess," he whispers in relief, and one of the men hits him hard again.

"No, no, leave him alone, don't hurt him," Robin cries, and the warriors laugh as they leave the beta on the ground.

"Little goddess... How can you call a filthy human a goddess? Humans are things, nothing else," one of them says in disgust, approaching Robin, who backs away, and Liam becomes distressed.

"Stay away from her, don't you dare touch her!" Liam shouts and the men laugh again.

"That scum! but she will be useful in keeping you in line. It's time for you to tell us everything you know about Moonvalley, why Logan didn't fall into the trap, and what those foolish brothers of his are up to?" one man asks Liam and then punches him again, this time in the stomach.
Robin and I are frantic now, while the beta holds on. If there was any doubt about what these werewolves were up to, it's clear now, and I can't believe they're going to get away with it.

"You will never defeat my mates! No matter what you do against the pack, you won't win; the world will find out what the Night Wolves are doing!" I yell. One of the wolves rushes at me, pushing at the bars that rattle, and I fall back in fear.

"What are you saying, foolish creature? You know nothing about the world of the wolves, and you tell us what will happen? The night wolves will prevail. We'll eat you and your stupid alphas with one bite," he growls, shaking the bars of my cell, and the wolves around him laugh even more, like madmen. In the dim light they bring from their torches, I see that he's a bald man with a terrible face.

"What do you say, beta?" another man asks Liam again.

"I will never speak against my alphas," he replies, spitting blood. The bald man clucks his tongue.

"We'll see about that. A little more torture for you and we'll see how brave you are," the bald man says maliciously as another warrior speaks up.

"Actually, let's leave him here. Maybe the proximity to his 'goddess' will make him rethink his alliances.

"What an excellent idea! Let's give him a good beating so he can think properly," the bald man adds, and I watch for terrifying minutes as they beat Liam, who seems to be doing everything he can not to scream, so as not to worry my friend, who is still screaming and crying in agony. Finally, they leave him in another cell next to hers, and she moves closer to touch him.

"My poor, beautiful mate," Robin says through tears, barely audible, but they are together, and their closeness makes them feel better, regardless of the conditions.

I think again about my mates, my family, the human town, Lionel, who must be suffering too, and finally the little wolf who was captured because of me. None of it makes sense. Maybe just out of desperation or frustration, I start shaking the bars and kicking them as hard as I can, until suddenly a piece falls off, a bar comes loose.

"My God," I gasp in amazement. It must have been when that man, the bald one, came over to scare me.

"Guys, I think there's a way out."
