Chapter 46: Omissions
Robin
I had run out of the factory with a broken heart, rushing like a madwoman, knowing that I was leaving my friend to die. My mind felt clouded and I had to focus; finding help was the only thing that mattered, the only chance to save her. At least I knew the place, and the first thing I did was go straight to Maddie's family's house.
It was almost dawn and I was surprised to find no one there. Maybe her mother had left for work and Mark hadn't arrived yet. For a moment I forgot what the work dynamic was in this town, always pushing ourselves to the limit and giving everything after losing our land.
I was afraid of being found, and I thought I couldn't just wait. So I took a stone and scratched a message on one of the letters in the letterbox outside, saying that I had been there and that we were in danger. It seemed the only logical thing to do.
“Help us Mark, we need you” I whisper.
I remembered where he worked and ran there on shaky legs. I had to do what I could. I didn't see anyone else in town and I didn't know if anyone else would help me, for I was afraid they would think we were with the wolves. I had seen the looks they gave me and my family when we returned, she and I accompanied by our mates.
I thought I'd been as stealthy as possible and not attracted attention, but when I heard a howl I realized I'd been found.
"We've got you at last, darling. Were you really trying to escape, pretty one?" the wolf said as he approached me, and I tried to pull myself out of the shock I was in.
I couldn't let them catch me. That was the only thing I kept thinking. I couldn't go back to that place after my friend had risked herself for me, but the plan to get help now seemed so far away and impossible.
The man approached menacingly, but maintained a smile. I always remembered what Maddie said: wolves didn't seem to think we were a real threat, or even a significant opponent; we were just a game for them to have fun at. I kept stepping back as he circled me.
"Where do you think you're going? Do you really think you can take me?" he growls.
"I'm going to try," I whispered, and he laughed. Now that he was closer, I realized he was huge and strong, and I felt an instant repulsion towards him.
"We'll see," he said, and lunged at me.
I ran and managed to get some distance for a moment, but as he threw me to the ground and got on top of me, I hit him in the eye with the flashlight Maddie gave me, injuring him as he screamed.
He retreated, and I watched in horror as he turned into a wolf, one of his eyes bleeding. How could I fight such a creature?
Now the wolf dragged its claws across the ground as if preparing to attack. I was still on the ground, recovering, and I closed my eyes, expecting the worst. But out of nowhere I saw the wolf being attacked by another, a light brown one, and they were rolling on the ground amid growls, howls and scratches. My world changed completely as I saw one of the twins run desperately towards me.
My mind screamed that they weren't from our world, that the wolves had made life too hard for us, but I couldn't ignore the way my heart sang when I saw them. The look in his beautiful eyes when he saw me in danger was terrifying, and as he finished off the enemy wolf, he focused on me.
Within seconds, he had Lionel arms around me, and I was crying. I felt weak, unable to help my friend, and unable to escape from these men. He was mine, and I was his, no matter what.
"Mate, my beautiful mate, I'm here, you are safe now. My brave mate…" he said, no matter what had happened. He didn't ask where I was or what I was doing, he just came to rescue me.
When I felt Liam come to hug me too, I felt complete. I had lied; I knew exactly who was who, their smells and touches, my both mates. I was lost in them and it frightened me. But when I saw two of the dragons, I felt terror.
"We have to find our Luna," my twins begged, and I couldn't say no, and I explained where they had us.
They all ran to the old factory. I was afraid of what they might find, but when the doors swung open, all I saw was emptiness, blood on the floor and destruction.
"They've taken her!" the brothers cried, and I could feel their pain.
Maddie, Maddie, I've failed you. What have they done to you?
The blonde of the triplets knelt and wailed in pain. The others cursed, and the rest of the warriors searched the area from side to side for evidence. Dominic bellowed, demanding explanations.
"Where were they? Who were they? What did they want?" he asked me repeatedly as I shook, and the twins held me.
"Help us, please, mate," the Golden Boys begged me.
"We were attacked, they caught us," I said. It wasn't a lie, but it wasn't the whole truth either.
"Who? What did you hear?"
"Gerard... said he was going to finish us off, that he was going to hurt you. Maddie… she risks her life to save me, to give me a chance" I said, and it seemed like the worst thing I could have said. The brothers screamed, Liam hugged and carried me while Lionel made plans with the dragons.
“We need to find her!”
“She is gone!”
I couldn't tell them everything that had happened and all our plans, and for the moment they didn't ask for anything more; they just wanted to know immediately so that they could find my friend, and in that respect we all had the same goal.
"They were here, but we arrived too late. They've moved her!" said one of the triplets when he heard a voice from further away.
"The trail leads to here! By all the heavens, Maddie must still be alive!"
