Chapter 114: Something I should have done
Logan
“We have to kill these men. We have to finish them right now! They hurt my mate and you’re guilty of all this too,” Morgan was yelling in my head. Unfortunately, he was right. And although I also wanted to see these men’s blood, later we needed to follow them to get to the human.
The conversation with my uncle had cut off, as if everyone had more important things to do. I chase after these men. I would love to catch Gerard red-handed and hopefully save the human.
“They mentioned an area,” my wolf whispered, and we followed that group from the council. Old bastard traitors.
“What’s happening?” they asked each other. They seem lost.
“There was an attack, and the prisoners escaped,” said one of them. They encountered warriors who seemed to be from the Night Wolves or another pack. They started heading through the forest, looking worried, and I approached from behind. I took down a couple who didn’t even see me coming when I came upon what looked like an implosion in the middle of the forest.
“The old temple,” I said in surprise. Now that I thought about it, it was the perfect place to hide prisoners. Few people visited the old temple, but it was well-hidden and rumored to have passageways and traps. The place was chaos: I saw wolves running in all directions, part of the temple collapsing, a cloud of dust covering everything, and wolves trying to escape while others ran frantically.
“Could my brothers be involved in this?” But it seemed more like an earthquake, or disaster had happened, and they were trying to recover. Then I saw one man, someone I recognized. Mafia! That bastard was going to pay for deceiving me. If all these men were from the Night Wolves or if other packs were involved, the situation would be even more complicated. I heard him giving orders.
“Chase him, don’t let him escape! He’s going to pay for everything he’s done!”
I feared they were talking about the human. So, I followed him and the group of men he was commanding. Beyond a stream, I was shocked to see a tree fall, crushing and knocking out most of the wolves. The one who stood out, the one who provoked this was someone I knew.
“Liam…” I approached him. The beta looked wary, but he was so badly wounded that he could no longer defend himself. He had fought like a true warrior, no doubt.
“You were supposed to be in town with your mate. She was here, wasn’t she?” I asked, and he nodded. I checked him and treated his wounds. He seemed to have been beaten and tortured for quite some time. Against all odds, the beta had fought and taken down several enemies.
“We were held at the temple, Robin, Maddie, and I. I don’t know for how long, but we managed to escape. My mate and the Luna fought fiercely and got out while I bought time with the enemies,” he said, and sighed. I held his head, moved him, and fetched some water from the stream, giving it to him as he recovered. Around him, there were only corpses.
“I fought with everything I had, Alpha. The temple seemed unstable, and I took advantage. I killed several on the way. They were all gathered here; I think it was their base of operations, there were explosives... I used everything at my disposal.”
“You did much more, Liam,” I said, now understanding everything that had happened while I played the fool Alpha. He grabbed my shirt and looked at me anxiously.
“The Luna won the challenge, but they tried to sabotage her. They almost killed her, but she was brave, she is a true Luna,” he confirmed. Even though I had denied her so many times, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride at hearing his words.
“We need to get back to the pack, Liam. You need to recover; there’s still much danger to face,” I told him, and I lifted him as he leaned on me. I couldn’t even imagine everything this man had faced and survived, and I wouldn’t let anything happen to him.
“I think they have them… they took them out of here and took them, my mate…and the Luna,” he repeated anxiously as we moved.
If I was right, this was all a plan, not just to defeat us in the pack and for our uncle to take power, but also a strategy by the Council and the other packs to take the territories and what belongs to the humans. Not to free them, but to take it all.
“We have to stop it, Alpha,” Liam repeats, distressed. Ideally, it would have been best to confront Gerard here, but I no longer had time to search for him; I had to save the beta, who needed urgent attention.
“They want to eliminate her... this has all been a plan,” I tell him what I had heard. As we move through the forest edge as fast as possible, I hear the voices of some men, and he and I hide behind some bushes.
“This wolf has to die. Those were the orders!”
“But it’s a wild wolf. They’re supposed to be our ancestors. They’re sacred,” says another, as I saw they had a small wolf trapped in a net.
“That wolf helped our Luna. He sought her help, and she gave it to him! He’s the wolf from the rite!” exclaims the beta. I stare in astonishment at the animal, who kept struggling despite being trapped. The other warrior was right: wild wolves were sacred, not only were they our ancestors, but brothers to our own wolves. I couldn’t let them harm him.
“She’s a true Luna, and she is ours,” Morgan sighed contentedly in my head.
I quickly gave him control. He lunged at those men, finally free. The need for revenge filled my muscles, bones, and flesh. We tore through those men, ripping skin, tasting blood, breaking bones. The small, gray wolf looks at me in surprise as I free him with my hands, truly wild. And he had been with her. She… Maddie… is special.
“You’re free, wolf, though you’d be very welcome where I want to take you, to someone I believe you know. There’s something I must do, something I should have done a long time ago.”
