Chapter 145: Dominic's Truth

Dominic

"Damn, brother, we need you. We need you strong and healthy," I sigh from the edge of the bed as I look at Logan, who is suffering. I can feel his wolf, restless and tormented. It must be because of everything he has seen and discovered. But I can also feel it's because of our mate, and I hope he feels remorse for what has happened. And that he can truly earn her forgiveness.
"You will make it. There's nothing you set your mind to that you can't achieve," I tell him, smiling. "Except reject Maddie... except turn against us... but that would never have ended well. It wasn't what the goddess intended; it wasn't our destiny," I whisper before heading back to my office.
I've been here day and night. Kurt is watching the border, and one of the twins has gone to see if there's any good news from Rowan. We'd planned to go to the human towns, but we needed to be ready and well armed.
I'm going over the information we have on other matters we're dealing with. We have so many fronts to cover that we're going to have to clone ourselves at this point! Especially now, as I look at the pictures one of our warriors brought back from a bar. They saw Irina there. Apparently, she's trying to recruit several Alphas to the Council's cause. It's an abomination. In the picture, she's close to several Alphas, wearing a tiny bikini, as if seducing them, offering herself to them.
Our idea is to get closer to her, to find out who the infiltrators are in our pack. The thought of someone living among us, waiting to attack our mate or us, keeps me awake at night. Maddie's safety is everything to me. And it seems as if I've summoned her with my thoughts when I hear her knocking on the office door. When I see her face, I know that everything we're fighting for is worth it.
"You know you can come in without knocking, mate. This place is yours as much as ours," I say, and she smiles. "Is there anything you need? Anything you want to talk about?" I ask, noticing her hesitation, as if she wants to say something but doesn't know how.
She approaches the desk... and sees the picture of Irina. And those terrible images flash in my mind: when Irina caught me off guard, tried to take advantage of me. The guilt surges through me; I try to push it down, but it's there - pulsing, desperate to get out. Kurt had advised me not to talk to Maddie about this, but the fear eats away at me.
"This woman..." Maddie whisper, agitated.
"She's far away. She can't hurt us."
"Is she behind all this? Do you... do you see her? Are you in contact with her?" she asks, worried, and all I can think about is how my mate thinks we have some kind of connection with Irina. After everything that has happened to her, her fear and concern are more than justified.
"It's not what you think, mate..."
"You have to stay away from her! I can't even look at her! Is she after me? After you?" She looks so worried, I don't know who's got her like this, but I hold her and pull her into my arms.
"This woman will never harm us again," I say as I hold her, and she falls silent. Then she looks up at me, her eyes filled with tears.
"She said something... she said that you and her..." Maddie says, looking at the picture. Goddess! The picture was horrible, and it's right there, on my desk!
"I'm begging you, mate, it's not what you think... it's..." I start, but I can't go on, and she holds my face.
"What's wrong, Dominic?" she asks, and I swallow hard and tell her the whole story.
How she drugged me and got on top of me. I had the horrible feeling that I was trying to defend myself, but this wasn't like other men who make excuses for despicable things they've done. I tried not to see it that way, but I was a victim of Irina.
"Oh, Dominic!" Maddie cries in distress.
"Nothing happened, mate, I swear. I would never want anything with her! You are everything to me. I would choose you a thousand times over, with my eyes closed. I'd choose you even if all I had from you was a look, a greeting... the promise of seeing you one last time." My voice is pleading, a desperate cry for her to believe me. Tears well up in her eyes as she embraces me.
"You shouldn't have had to suffer like this, my love. My precious mate," she answers, fully understanding everything that's happened. She kisses my face and I feel a weight lift from my chest.
"I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry."
"You didn't do anything. You were trying to save Kurt, and she used it all. She wants both of you, she wants power," she says, trying to comfort me.
"I love you so much, Maddie... I had this secret, I didn't know how to explain it, and I couldn't stop thinking it sounded bad, but it's the truth."
"I know, I know..." she says, stroking my face. She gives me a small kiss that turns into something more. Her mouth claims mine, consoling me, making me hers, calling me hers, and I let her, because there's nothing more real than that. Soon I have her pressed against the desk, my hands running down her thighs under her pajamas.
