Chapter 95: Surviving

Maddie

For a while I thought about how I was going to climb that big wall of earth as the little wolf circled around our now small prison. Then it occurred to me to look for a stone, and I began to scrape away at the wall of earth, looking for more roots, and I found several.

"Yes, this is the solution," I said to the wolf. Now I wasn't just talking to myself, I was talking to an animal! The first few times I tried to climb, I fell loudly. I had to get out of here before the council and the night wolves found me.

Being alone in the forest was bad, but being stuck here was worse. As I managed to get further up the wall, which was much higher than anything I had ever climbed in my life, I heard the little wolf howling softly, and I turned to look at him.

"I won't leave you here, trust me," I said, and once again the little wolf seemed to understand me.

When I reached the top and my hands felt the flat surface of the earth, I was immensely relieved. I groped for another root and pulled myself up with aching arms. The air here was purer and wonderful than anything I had ever felt in my life. I took a second to catch my breath when I heard the wolf howl again.

"I have never been so happy to see the forest again," I sighed, and now I heard another growl from below.

"Okay, now it's your turn," I said to him.

I found some branches, tied them together with my coat and some of my clothes and threw them into the trap. The little wolf seemed to understand and bite into them with his snout while I picked him up. But he was afraid, and suddenly he fell down again, seeming discouraged.

"Come on, you can do it, little wolf, you can get out, you have to believe me!" I told him, and he tried again and again. There was a moment when he was close, so I gave him another branch, and he put it in his mouth and bite down hard with his teeth until he finally got out. I watched him spin around, very happy; for a moment he looked like a little dog.

"Well done, well done! You did a great job, little wolf!" I exclaimed with delight. I leaned over to check his wound again and adjusted the simple bandage. I figured he would heal faster than humans since he was used to it. He didn't seem to be a werewolf, just a little lost wolf, and I guess that was better.

"All right, you're free now. You can go back to your pack or get on with your life," I told him, and he looked at me curiously. "I'd love for you to come with me, but I have enough problems with people, let's say, of your kind or something like that," I explained.

He just stared at me for a moment and then just walked away, leaving me feeling sad. We hadn't been together long, but I liked his company. Maybe it made me feel less alone, a little protected, even though I didn't know if the little wolf would help me with anything or if I was putting him in danger.

Once again I had to see where the hell I was, so I climbed another tree and realized that I was very far away from everything; at least I couldn't see my enemies, but the mountain wasn't even in sight. Where could they be? Had they left me for dead? I hoped so.

I wandered for quite a while, and when I found the river, I figured I was on the right path, so I follow the flow. On the way, I climbed another tree and saw the mountain. As I approached, I saw the tracks of the great beast and felt fear again. I heard a noise behind me, and to my horror I saw a man from the Council. He looked as if he had won the lottery.

"Well, well… look what I found. If it isn't the human girl who ran away from everyone. Did you really think a stupid little girl like you could stand up to us?" My legs trembled, my knees buckled, and I was terrified. The man didn't even transform into a wolf; it seemed like he wanted to kill me in his human form. It must be very easy for him.

"Leave me alone, the ritual is still on and..." I stammered.

"Shut up, human! Do you think we will wait for the ritual? Silly girl! I don't know how you survived this long, but this is your end! I told those foolish wolves you were still here, and I was right!" the man sneered. He was tall, with dark eyes, and a bit older. As he lunged at me, I stepped back, trembling. After a few days of survival, I no longer had an ace up my sleeve.

"As easy as taking candy from a baby," he said, when I tried to move, he punched me, knocking me to the ground as I defended myself with my hands, but I was no match for him.

"Surrender, stupid girl!"

I realized that I was close to the cave and that I could run there. This place was familiar to me, and I saw a glint of metal beyond it, thinking excitedly that it might be my knife.

If only I could reach it... but when I tried to move, the man grabbed me by the foot and dragged me, hitting me. At the worst moment I heard another growl and the little wolf jumped on him.

"Little wolf!" I shouted, worried about the little wolf facing the man.

"Stupid animal! What the hell are you doing?" the councilman yelled as he struggled with the wolf. I ran to get the knife and help the wolf, and when I returned, the little wolf had already finished off the man, biting his neck and tearing it apart. I saw the man lying dead, bleeding, and the wolf looking at me tiredly. I was stunned by what had happened.

"You are really strong," I said. Maybe the man didn't expect the strength of this little animal, and his mistake was definitely not turning into a werewolf, or perhaps was just a weak man.
"Thank you, thank you so much, thank you for following me," I said. When I saw that his leg wound was getting worse, I helped him to the river, cleaned the wound, helped him up the small hill and found my things again. He looks happy to be with me, and I thought we can help each other.

"I'll take care of you, you'll see," I said, stroking his fur, and I felt strangely happy to be accompanied again.

"How I wish my mates were here," I sighed, and fell asleep beside the wolf, wishing for a few peaceful days that weren't filled with so many dangers and adventures.

The councilman was dead; he said that they would not wait for the ritual, so... this will end with my death?
