Chapter 142: The Warrior Chief

Dominic

I don't notice the explosion until it's too late.
I'm thrown through the air. There's a loud crash and I get up, disoriented, my warriors scattered everywhere, rogues and beasts. Logan was right - this is chaos. There's fire all around me, and our warriors are trying to put it out. I've slammed into a large wall. This must be the laboratory my brother spoke of.
"Alpha, you've got to get out of there!" my men shout, but if what my brother says is true, this is where we'll find what we need to defeat the Council. I start searching frantically, trying to make the most of every second. All around me, parts of the ceiling are collapsing, and I feel the heat of the fire - I know this place is a ticking time bomb.
"Alpha, please!" my beta shouts.
"Take care of the wounded and grab what you can!" I shout back. I know he doesn't agree, but he obeys. I see a large folder and a map of the human territories, like the one we had in our war council. I also see a bag and pack everything I can into it before rushing out, just in time.
"Goddesses!" The structure collapses, taking the beasts, rogues and other monstrous creatures with it. I count our wounded, and those who are still standing start throwing dirt and stones to try to weaken the fire. I have burns and wounds, but I continue to fend off the remaining rogues. The beast is down, but I'm not sure if there are more, and I don't have time to find out now.
"We have a few files, Alpha," Lionel says. Considering everything that's happened, we should be happy to be alive. Some of our warriors have died, and we're dragging their bodies out. We carried out the wounded while we wait for reinforcements. When they come, they are as lost as us.
"How is my brother Logan?" I ask one of the arriving warriors, one of Dr Karim's mates. I knew they were on our side.
"The prognosis is uncertain, but he'll recover, Alpha," he says, and we make our way home. We're a larger group and safer.
"I don't understand what's happening, Lionel. First my uncle and now this..."
"At least we'll have evidence, and we will be more prepare," Lionel mentions as he looks at some of the files I've taken. I have a sinking feeling that the destruction of the lab wasn't a coincidence. What important things could have been there? Information, data, files that could've helped us. We're watched. We should've seen this coming.
That night, as we camped in the forest, I caught a familiar scent. My friend notices it too, and the other warriors are on alert. I signal them to stay calm and quiet.
"Maybe all is not lost. We can kill two birds with one stone," I whisper, hardly able to believe my luck. Moving forward, I find the very person I had in mind.
"Get him!" I call through the mind link, and we catch Rowan off guard, ambushed. He's alone and looks lost.
"We may come back with more than we thought," my Beta smirks. The chief of the warriors must have helped my uncle, and if anyone knows where he is or what he's up to, it's this man who's now within our reach.
"Talk, Rowan," I roar, my voice shaking with suppressed anger. "How did Oscar and Vera get away?"
I move closer, feeling my temper about to snap. "Don't make this worse for yourself, Rowan," I say in a low, dangerous tone. "Tell us the truth, or I swear you'll regret it."
Rowan stops resisting. I can see the pure terror in his eyes; he knows there's no way out.
"Oscar... he planned it all," he mutters, his voice cracking with fear. What is he so afraid of?
I frown, feeling my anger boiling inside. Threats or not, he betrayed his own pack.
"Who helped him?" I ask sharply. "Give me names, Rowan. Now."
"The Council... they have moles inside Moonvalley. Irina have friends there... but they're not alone. Other packs helped him too." A shiver runs down my spine.
"I will kill those motherfuckers!" Damiano yells in my head.
"Tell me everything you know," I growl, gritting my teeth as I lean closer.
The traitor swallows hard, his voice barely audible. "Oscar will join the Night Wolves. The Council... they promised them power in exchange for information about all you." He pauses, as if it pains him to speak. "And... about Maddie."
Maddie's name hits me like a cold wave. Everything comes back to her. I feel a knot in my stomach. Oscar knows too much, and now so does the Council.
"What are they planning?" I ask through clenched teeth, trying to keep the panic from rising. If something happens to Maddie...
Rowan looks at me with fear in his eyes. "I don't know exactly. But Oscar... he never has the idea of give the power to you. He wanted to be alfa. He knows how important Maddie is to you... And the Council sees her as a key piece in all this."
Maddie. Why does it keep coming back to her? My heart pounds furiously, torn between anger and fear. If Oscar is fleeing to the Night Wolves and the Council is involved... this is far darker than I ever imagined.
"Damn it," I mutter, clenching my fists tightly. I won't let them hurt her. We have to stop them before it's too late. If the Council is behind this, Maddie and the whole pack are in danger.
It's all connected: the attacks, the Beasts, the Council, and now the betrayal within. But more than anything, Maddie's name echoes in my head, making me fear the worst. Lionel crouches near the former warrior chief, looking worried.
"Why did you do it? You were our role model," my Beta whispers. "Tell me, were you threatened? It must have taken a lot of pressure for a warrior chief to leave his post like that."
He's right. This is not normal and it's not a coincidence. There is something more going on here. Rowan hesitates, and I see the exact moment the wolf breaks.
"They have her..."
Her? He has a mate? He... never had one. I thought he never found her.
"They have her... Vera. She went with him, but by force. She didn't want to go, and I... I couldn't leave her," the wolf admits, trembling. This situation was all too familiar. No, it can't be...
"Vera? What does the former Luna have to do with this?" my Beta asks. Rowan swallows hard and his lips quiver as he says:
"Vera... she's my mate."
