Chapter 16: Hard Truths
Maddie
"You're supposed to control them! You're supposed to be the most conscious and intelligent brother!" shouted Alpha Oscar, and even though I didn't know much about the werewolf hierarchy, I quickly understood that he was a man to be wary of.
"Uncle, the Night Wolves are into some really weird stuff," Dominic said, still arguing with his uncle, but it seemed like nothing good was going to come of it.
"Enough! Enough, Dominic! I've told you so many times, I've lost count, you can't mess with the Night Wolves! Haven't you got enough problems already? Now I have to go to the Council and explain to the rest of the wolves why you attacked another pack and spied on them, against our agreements!" the Alpha yelled.
"They attacked our mate..." he replies angry.
"Understand this once and for all, boy: humans act differently. Maybe those girls were looking for something with them... maybe they were the ones looking for trouble," the Alpha said, and I didn't like that at all.
Do they really think that Robin and I would willingly go to that place with those wolves?
Dominic didn't answer, but a terrible growl could be heard.
"You don't know her, you don't know who she is, and you won't know until you're here with her, trying to get her to accept the mate bond! Do you really think the human will cooperate if you don't do your part? As far as I know, no Alpha has ever been rejected by a human, so work with her instead of putting your brothers in danger," the Alpha said sternly, and I moved away from the door and closer to Kurt.
I felt ashamed to be eavesdropping, but I had to gather information wherever I could. Meanwhile, the youngest of the triplets remained unconscious.
I didn't know what kind of medicine they had here, or if it was different from human medicine, but he was still on the stretcher and his vitals were being monitored.
He looks better, but he still did not wake up. When a very busy Karim came in, I took the opportunity to ask about his condition.
"We don't know much yet. We have to wait. Werewolves are stronger than humans, but it takes time for a wound like this to heal, wolfsbane... is bad, really bad. But don't worry, all of this will be hastened by your presence. You'll begin to understand the importance of a mate's role in a wolf's life," she explained, and for now I nodded at what they were telling me. At least I wasn't cooped up in my room.
I took Kurt's hand and I had to say that his skin was soft, tanned and felt so good next to mine. And so I stayed all afternoon and into the night, just watching him and waiting for him to wake up.
I had seen him interact with his brothers, and he seemed to be the fun one, although he was pretty intense with me.
At one point, I went into a small kitchen in the infirmary to get some coffee, and while I was there, sighing and looking out the window, trying to gather any information I could about this place, I heard footsteps, and when I turned around, it was Dominic.
The wolf was standing in front of me, watching me as I leaned against the table. He had some wounds on his arm, scratches and a stitch on his face.
"Are you okay?" I asked suddenly, setting my coffee cup down on the table.
"This is what you wanted, isn't it? Although, if I remember correctly, you said you really wanted me dead," he said.
I watched him swallow, struggling with whether to approach me. Despite his wounds, Dominic seemed to light up this small kitchen with his presence.
He was tall, and his brown hair was messy and shiny. I saw his desperate green eyes wandering all over my face, as if he would find answers there.
"I didn't do anything," I defended myself.
"Of course you did...you've been manipulating us for a while now, haven't you? First you insult and reject us, and the next day you dance seductively with us, making us think there's a possibility. Then you shut down and give us nothing. Is that what you want? To drive us crazy! My older brother is lost, and we can't find him, my younger brother is fighting between life and death," he said desperately, as if he couldn't control himself anymore, and I took a few steps back.
"Am I to blame for all this? I have no idea where you were or what you were doing!"
"We went to fight the wolves who captured you! My brother could not bear the thought that they had hit you! That another wolf had touched you!" he cried, his mouth trembling.
"None of this would have happened if the wolves hadn't interfered with human affairs. It's your kind that has done barbaric things to mine! It's you who kidnap and manipulate!" I shouted angrily.
Is he really coming to accuse me? How dare he? He took steps closer, and I tried to stay in my spot.
"We didn't do anything! It was the Night Wolves!"
"I don't know who they are, and I don't care. All you care about is that another man touched what you supposedly own."
"You have no idea about any of this... you don't know what it means to us," he said, shaking his head and running his wounded hands through his hair, as if he were so desperate that he was looking for a way to control himself.
"No, I have no idea because no one has explained anything to me. You took our lands and made our lives a living hell!" I shouted like a madwoman.
"We did no such thing!"
"You destroyed my life!" I shouted, and I saw him growl angrily.
Frankly, I didn't know if he was going to kill me or throw himself on me as he grabbed my wrists and pulled me against him.
