Chapter 151: Change of plans

Kurt
"I don't like to stay here, something strange is happening," my wolf Ajax says for the fiftieth time.
"Our brother asked us to stay. We can't leave our mate unprotected, nor the pack. But at the same time we need to be here, halfway between the pack and the city. On guard in case something happens in the human town," I reply, and he growls.
I pace restlessly. I've sent several of our warriors to patrol beyond the borders. And even though I trust Arthur and Matt not to let anything happen inside, I can't shake the feeling of unease. Ajax is right, something strange is happening.
Maybe it's because we haven't fully organized our raid on the human town. Or perhaps it's because I've been so busy with the pack that I haven't spent enough time with Maddie. It always gets to me; I need her like I need air. I hate being the designated Alpha, I hate it. I dream of spending all day in bed with my mate.
Out of the blue I hear a noise and all my senses go on high alert. I hear shots hitting the trees and one of them hits me right in the leg. I scream in pain.
"Wolfsbane! Damn it!" I yell. Now I can't shift into wolf form, nor can I communicate with Dominic's or my men.
"Attack!" I yell, praying my men will hear me. I brace myself for the worst, expecting Gerard and his bastards, when I'm shocked to see that my attackers are... humans. They keep shooting at me as I run and hide behind a tree. I start picking up stones and throwing them, causing some to fall, screaming.
"Kill the wolf!"
"We'll get a good price for him!" they shout.
"A good price? What are they talking about?" Ajax wonder as they continue to attack. When they reach the tree I'm hiding behind, I face them with my bare hands and take them down one by one. They're hooded, and when I uncovered their faces, I saw that some were dead and others just unconscious.
"What the hell was that ?" I ask in confusion as I limp and try to remove the bullet. Without notice, I hear a desperate scream that chills my blood.
"Mate," Ajax whispers weakly inside me, and I find the strength I didn't know I had to run towards the sound.
"Alpha!" I hear my men shout. I realize they were attacked too.
"Protect the perimeter! Attack the humans if you see them!" I shout. I don't like the idea of attacking weaker humans, but something tells me this was all a distraction. Maddie was outside the pack, and that can't happen. In the distance, I hear a wolf fighting and a man screaming, but I concentrate on following Maddie's trail. When I find her, she's tied up and shivering near a tree. My heart races.
"Kurt!" she cries, looking at me as if I'm her savior. I untie her and scoop her into my arms.
"Mate, you're here. What happened?" I ask in horror as some of my men approach, and we head back to the pack.
"Kevin... he attacked me, he kidnapped me! Arthur helped him! Little Wolf saved me,' she says in a panic, holding on to me, so I won't run away. I don't understand any of this. I see blood on the ground and tracks that seem to belong to the little wolf.
"What do you mean? What's happening?" I ask, trying to calm her. Then she tells me what happened in the last few moments, leaving me in shock. Arthur... our own pack. He must be the traitor.
"But how? How did he get here and what does this cursed human have to do with it?" I ask, remembering that she said he was her ex-boyfriend, that idiot Kevin.
"We have to kill him" Ajax yells.
"He's the one who's been sending me messages, trying to get me to side with him against you. They're negotiating with the Night Wolves to hand over human women."
"Messages? What are you talking about?" I ask, holding her in the middle of the forest. One of the warriors gives her some water; I order them to contact Matt and the doctor to warn them that something is happening. I tell them to look for Arthur and Kevin. Maddie tells me about the strange messages she received, and what that fucking human said during their encounter.
"I know I should have told you sooner, but I was scared and didn't know how," she confesses, distraught.
"Yes, you should have. But the important thing is that you're safe," I tell her, and she starts to cry. What had happened was terrible. Once again, we should have been protecting her and we had left her vulnerable. She was bruised, hurt... my heart ached to see her like this. And use women to their goals... goddess...
"I won't leave your side, OK? I'll stay with you" I confess as she continues to cry. Suddenly one of my men appears.
"Alpha, we didn't find the human, but we found the little wolf," he says. The little wolf appears, its snout covered in blood.
"Oh, sweet wolf!" Maddie cries, collapsing to the ground as the animal licks her to make sure she's all right. I realize that if it hadn't been for the animal, something terrible could have happened.
"Find that bastard and bring him back to me alive!" I say angrily. The situation can't get any worse, but then I hear screams and what sound like explosions from another direction. Give me a break!
"Something's happening in the human town, Alpha," one of the warriors says, and Maddie gets even more nervous.
"Matt and the doctor say everything's under control in the pack and there's no attack," another warrior reports.
"Damn it, we have to get to the human town!" I grunt. Maddie looks at me worriedly.
"Please don't leave me alone. Let me go with you," she begs. I'm sure Dominic will scold me, but she's right, we shouldn't be separated. I promised her.
"All right, but we have to take precautions," I reply. I talk to the warriors as a vehicle with equipment arrives. Finally, I remove the bullet and wrap a makeshift bandage around my leg.
"For the Goddess' sake, Kurt!" Maddie cries in distress.
"Don't worry, love. I'm fine now," I say, and we get into the car. The little wolf is in the back of the truck as we head into town.
"They're calling for backup, more cars are on the way!" another warrior shouts and I send more instructions to Matt.
"What the hell's going on over there?" my wolf wonders. I grab a gun and give instructions to Maddie.
"There are wolfsbane bullets. If you're in danger, you need to defend yourself," I explain as we rejoin our warriors and hurry off.
