Chapter 94: A new friend

Maddie

I felt triumphant. Even though I had never taken a life before, maybe it was the adrenaline rushing through my body. the wolf seems dead and at least he´s not going to bother me anymore. When I heard the giant beast again, I realized that this wasn't over and that there would be more maniacs after me.

I was so tired that I hid behind some trees while the beast seemed to search for me, probably following my scent. It didn't seem as intelligent as the wolves, but more primitive, though that wasn't entirely a good thing. It was still huge, and I wondered where such a beast could have come from.

"There! Find her!! Follow her scent!" I heard shouts in the distance. I didn't quite understand what they were saying, but they still seemed to be looking for me.

"Maybe she ran away."

"Come on, men! We're talking about a simple, little, stupid, human girl. Can't you really find her? Aren't you supposed to be the strongest wolves, the most powerful pack? Do you call yourselves the Night Wolves or what dman it?" shouted a man whose voice sounded like one of the council members, one of those older men who do nothing but give orders.

It seemed that one of my pursuers had put him in his place, for the man fell silent. As I continued to listen, the beast continued to move restlessly, searching from side to side, and they didn't seem surprised by its presence. So they brought it, what the hell?

Where did they get such a creature? I had never seen a beast of that size, nor a wolf that walked on two legs. Not even in human stories did we know that such a creature existed.

"Hey old man, you better not tell us what to do! We respect what the council suggests, but we won't accept being treated like this. The girl has survived much longer than we thought, and there must be a reason for that!" one of the men replied. His voice sounded familiar; he was undoubtedly one of the Night Wolves, though I couldn't identify him. I wanted to get closer, but that would mean leaving my hiding place and the beast would find me.

"She is not marked. We confirmed it."

“Should be something else. But what?”

“This supposes to be easy”

"Then maybe she is the mate of those idiots," said the man of the Night Wolves, and another voice laughed.

Suddenly, the beast's howl startled me, and it seemed to have found me. I kept running, away from the men talking about their plans. I saw another path through the trees, a small one where the beast surely couldn't pass. But I took a wrong step, fell face-first into a big deep trap, and lost consciousness completely.

I awoke to a low growl. My head hurt terribly, and my face and hands, along with my entire body, were pressed against the dirt. A ray of sunlight hit my eyes and my whole body ached. I was in the hole, in the trap. I didn't know if the werewolves had dug it to trap their prey, or just to trap me.

And when I realized where the sound that woke me was coming from, I was surprised to see a small wolf in front of me. I didn't know who was more afraid, him or me. It bared its teeth and looked aggressive, but I thought it was just pure fear. I sat up and held my head. My hands were scratched, but I had survived the fall, and that was saying something.

"Hello, little wolf. I swear I won't hurt you," I pleaded, holding my hands out in front of me. He continued to growl, I saw that he was light gray with some white parts of his fur, his eyes were golden and he was really beautiful. I had spent most of my life hating wolves, and now I realized how beautiful they were.

"I see we're both trapped here. I'm as much a victim as you are, don't you think?" I whispered softly, trying to calm him. He tilted his head as if he was listening and understood what I was saying. I stood up very carefully, moving slowly so he wouldn't take it as an attack, so he could see that I wasn't a threat. The last thing I needed was to be attacked by a small wolf in this confined space where I had nowhere to go.

It seemed to be a brand-new day, and there was no sign of the beast or my captors. Perhaps they had lost my scent and left me alone, which would be the best scenario. Even though I was trapped here, my future didn't seem very bright.

"How do we get out of here?" I asked aloud, as if talking to the little wolf, and I saw that he moved a little and had an injured paw.

"Oh, poor thing," I said, and tried to approach him. He seemed hesitant and suspicious at first, but little by little I got closer.

After showing him my wounds and tearing off a piece of my shirt to tend to mine, I went to care for his, and he let me. Apparently he had been here for some time and had tried to climb out without success. I remembered my mate's words: wolves are definitely not good at climbing.

He pointed with his snout to the spot where he had apparently tried to climb. He seemed suspicious, but at the same time, it was as if he understood that with me, he had a chance to escape. I had hands that could hold on and long arms. When I grabbed hold of some roots, he showed me, he howled and lifted his ears happily.

“Yeah, maybe we can get out of here. I just have to think about it really hard.” he starts nudging me with his muzzle and I just pray that the little wolf is not on the side of these men, and that for heaven's sake... they don't find me.
