Chapter 176: The Last Stand

Logan

I saw the knife so close to me, and the certainty on Gerard's face that he was about to finish me off.
"You bastard!" I shouted, transforming.
"If we're going down, we're going down on all fours," Morgan told me. We charged straight at Gerard, and he transformed as best he could into a wolf and began to run. He knew I would defeat him in hand-to-hand combat, and he was right to run for his life.
He ran through the pack while I could hear our men fighting the enemy. Somewhere off in the distance, I sensed that my brothers had taken Madeleine with them to keep her safe. They would do the right thing. When the miserable Alpha stopped at a point, I knew it was my moment.
"You are done!" I roar, transforming to human.
I had Gerard pinned against the trees. My breathing is fast, heavy, but I still control every move. He doesn't move, just looks at me with that smile that has always infuriated me - the one that says he thinks he has everything under control. But now he's on trapped and he knows it. I feel the anger in every muscle of my body, the urge to end this here and now.
"This ends here, Gerard," I say, gritting my teeth and barely holding back the urge to smash his face in once and for all. He should never have been here, challenging me for something that never belonged to him.
"I have something of hers, you know? Her father. The poor man tried to turn against us; he found out about us some time ago. He tried to spread the rumor of what we do, kidnap human women. But I locked him up in my dungeons. I'll kill him. My men have orders to kill him if I don't return. You'll leave her without a father - is that what you want, dear cousin?" Gerard spit. I freeze.
"We can't believe him! We have to kill him now!" my wolf cries and I hesitate. Her father... my mate still mourns him. No, no, it can't be.
My fist trembles with the power of my suppressed rage, ready to strike, but something changes in the air. I feel it in my skin, the air grows denser, heavier. Then I hear them: footsteps, voices on the wind.
"You're surrounded, nephew, let your cousin go," my uncle orders. They and my uncle had me cornered. Six figures approach, imposing and calm, but I see the glint of betrayal in their eyes. The leader of the Council stares at me, his expression cold and calculating.
"Logan," his voice resounds, icy, cutting through the air between us, "this has gone too far. Moonvalley belongs to Gerard. We decided that years ago." I see my uncle with his arms folded and a satisfied smile. It's been him all along.
"I warned you, Logan," he says, his tone full of arrogance. "This pack needs a strong leader. And that someone is Gerard." The council members and their men draw weapons, surely laced with wolfsbane.
My jaw clenches in anger. Everything we have, and now these traitors think they can take it from me. This isn't justice - it's a blatant power grab. Three men from the Council raises theirs hand, I see weapons, and suddenly a deafening roar shakes the air.
Dominic.
My brother bursts through the trees like a storm, hitting the men with unstoppable force. I don't know if I've ever felt so relieved to see him. I roar, killing two in the act.
"You're not alone, brother!" he shouts as he knocks another man down with a brutal blow.
"Stop him!" my uncle yells, but is too late. A knot in my chest loosens. I won't have to fight this battle alone. With him by my side, I feel like we can do this. But when I think it can't get any better, I see her.
Madeleine. My Luna. She runs towards us with the determination that has always marked her, and she's not alone. Next to her is Kurt, his face hardened by battle. But there's something else - dozens of people. I see them in the distance, armed and walking with determined steps. Even the little wolf roars with them.
Humans. The Resistance and more people from the towns. They come with weapons, Mark at her side. My heart skips a beat. I never thought it was possible, humans and wolves fighting together, but here they are. My Luna has achieved what seemed impossible.
"We won't let you get away with this!" Madeleine cries, and the sound of her voice fills me with new strength. "We will fight together!" I've never seen her so brave. She is magic. My Luna, human but powerful, has brought with her those I never thought would join our fight. This is our moment. The Council screams, Dominic and the humans mowing them down with gunfire.
"Never!" Gerard yells, grabbing me by the throat. He lands a punch in my ribs, sending me reeling. I push him and we roll to the ground. But I pick him up and slam him to the ground with all my strength. Gerard tries to get up, but I hold him down. My hands wrap around his throat.
"You were never worthy. You're nothing but a coward," I whisper, my voice full of contempt. "And your ambition dies here." I hit him the way I've always wanted to, for all the times he's stood in our way.
"And this is for Madeleine! For hurting her! For kidnapping her! For abusing her!" I say, disfiguring him with each blow. Finally, I rip out his heart.
"No, no! This isn't over!" Oscar screams, his voice thundering with rage. I hear the twins commanding attacks further afield, chasing fleeing enemies.
“Those will die, or we will bring them to justice” Morgan growls.
"Mercy, mercy!" the Council members cry, but the fight is already over.
