Chapter 138: On my watch
Kurt
"Are you kidding me? Are you fucking kidding me?" I yell, completely enraged, as the twins start asking questions and gathering information, in full beta mode.
"Where is Dominic? Where the hell is my brother?" I run down the corridors looking for him, completely upset, while the warriors stare at me, unsure of what to do.
"How did he escape? He had a strong dose of wolfsbane, and you said he was beaten," Lionel asks.
"I personally beat him! There's no way he just walked out!" I yell.
"Close the borders! Be on the lookout for any clues! Track his scent!" Liam orders, already barking orders.
"This is outrageous! Can anything good ever happen in this pack?" I yell, pacing back and forth until I remember that my brother mentioned a training session.
"Training my ass," I think, slamming the doors one by one. Finally, I hear giggles, and not caring if I ruin the moment, I prepare to disturb the peace. We're in danger, right in front of us, in our own pack! I can't believe it.
"There you are!" I yell as I stumble upon a scene that leaves me speechless. My brother is painting Maddie's toenails and kissing her feet while she watches, enchanted. The scene is a strange mix of idyllic, sexy, sweet, and erotic. I don't know what to think anymore, but what I do know is that I'm angry - mostly at him for leaving me to deal with this mess on my own. I know I'm being unfair to him, but I can't think straight.
"What the hell?" I ask, startling him and wiping the smile off Maddie's face. Suddenly I feel guilty. After all, he's just trying to make her feel better, since we're always at the center of every problem.
"Sorry, mate, brother, I'm sorry, but we've got a problem," I say, trying to control my voice as Maddie's face changes, full of concern.
"Kurt... what's wrong?" she asks.
"What's going on?" Dom questions, now agitated, looking behind me at the twins.
"Our uncle escaped. We don't know where he is," I answer, and he looks at me like I've lost my mind.
"What are you talking about?" he shouts, jumping to his feet. "Mate, stay with Lionel, okay? We're not going to let anything happen to you," Dom says to Maddie, and soon he is walking with me, just as angry as I am. I think he's also angry that I interrupted his happy moment with her. "Where's that old fool?" he asks.
"I told you we should have killed him, finished him as soon as possible," I mutter.
"You never said that!"
"Well, I'm saying it now!" I snap, irritated. We watch the warriors running around. Liam is probably kicking their asses right now. How could this happen?
The air around me feels so thick I could cut it with a knife. My footsteps echo loudly as I walk through the halls, Dominic beside me. Oscar is gone. He can't be. How the hell could he escape if he was locked in his own room?
"When was the last time you saw him?" my brother asks.
"This morning... I left him bleeding, weak. Vera was sitting on the bed as usual, lost," I answer. Was it my fault? Did I miss something? Something I didn't notice?
I speed up my pace, feel the anger bubbling under my skin. I have to see it with my own eyes. When we reach the door to his room. I force the doors open and they slam against the walls.
The room is empty.
"Damn it," Dominic growls next to me, his voice filled with restrained anger. I can barely think. The ropes that bound him hang uselessly from the back of the chair, cut.
But the worst thing is the blood. We see Dr. Karim attending to someone.
Arthur. Logan's most loyal guard. His belly is covered in blood and his breathing is a painful rasp. I quickly kneel down beside him while Karim applies pressure to the wound.
"The warrior needs urgent care," she says as a stretcher appears. As they carry him away, I ask.
"Arthur, what happened?" My voice is deeper than I intend, a mixture of concern and suppressed anger.
He takes a moment to answer, struggling to catch his breath. "He had help...from within." A wave of anger washes over me. I stand, trying to process what he has just said. There's a traitor in the pack.
Dominic curses again, glaring at Arthur. "It had to be someone with access. There's no way Oscar could have gotten out of here without help. And no ordinary wolf could have hurt Arthur; he's a strong warrior."
We're in trouble. They'll come for us first, my thoughts race. Someone helped him, and that person is still here.
"Arthur, what did you see? Who was it?" Dominic asks as the doctor prepares to take him into surgery. The wound must be terrible if it doesn't heal on its own.
"Alphas, the warrior's life is in danger..." she warns. But Arthur tries to speak again, his face full of pain, his color fading. "Beware... Something worse... is happening..." but before he can say more, he loses consciousness.
"Arthur, Arthur!" I cry. I close my eyes, breathing deeply to keep control. A traitor, or perhaps several, are working from within, and something dark is brewing.
"Rowan must know something," Dominic suggests, clenching his fists. "He's the head of the warriors. Nothing happens without his knowledge."
I nod. Rowan was in charge of security. If anyone knows how the hell Oscar escaped, it would be him. But when we go to find him, the news we get chills us to the bone.
"Rowan is missing too," one of the warriors informs us, his face pale and nervous. My stomach instantly tightens.
"What the fuck?"
"What?" Dominic yells, approaching the warrior as if ready to rip his head off. "Why wasn't this reported earlier?" The warrior stutters, barely able to form a coherent answer.
"Beta Liam just informed us. The head of the warriors told us he was going on a hunt, but he hasn't returned for hours."
"Damn it!" This isn't just an escape. Something much bigger is in motion.
We move quickly. We check Vera's room, too. There's more movement, things thrown on the floor. It looks like our aunt didn't leave happy, possibly against her will. Whether she is a victim or not, we don't know yet. For now, it doesn't matter; we have to follow the trail. The warrior's head is a key piece.
"We go after Rowan, after them. There must be a clue," my brother says with a coldness in his voice that I barely recognize. We need to find out what's going on, and fast.
"Liam! Search for the traitor inside the pack! Interrogate everyone! All must be suspects, specially the warriors!" I yell through the mindlink. As we prepare to search for a fresh trail outside the pack, one of our patrols finds something. We see one of our warriors approaching, panting, injured, and completely exhausted. The wolf turns into a man, and I realize it's one of those who went with Logan.
"Matt..." Dominic says, walking over to the warrior.
Everything bad seems to happen on my watch. This isn't fair.
"The Alpha... Logan... is in danger... He needs help... It's life or death," the man pants, and our plans change again.
