Chapter 50: Who are you afraid of?

Robin

"I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry, Maddie," I repeated over and over in the few moments I stay in the infirmary, holding her hand and crying.

At first, I was terrified of returning to the pack we had fled. It had cost us so much, and we had done it for a reason, and yet every moment seemed like a good decision. Our town felt different, we were in danger.

"You've got to get better Maddie, don't leave me, I need you. Best friends forever, remember?" I asked her, hearing her gasp and stir and open her eyes, but still lost.

"Robin... help," she sighed. She was so injured it hurt to look at her. I was suffering, unable to do anything, keeping secrets, trying to protect us.

My dear friend was wounded and truly recovering in that bed, and I felt so guilty. I had abandoned her! What would happen to her now, to both of us, in this pack, if they found out that we had abandoned them?

From what little I knew of werewolf life, I had realized that for them there was two grave mistake: mates were not abandoned and, above all, the Alpha's orders were not disobeyed.

The triplets frightened me. They were angry, shouting and giving orders, and everyone seemed to obey without resistance. When I was near them, I knew they watched me, that they suspected I was hiding something, that I wasn't telling them the whole truth.

I also thought the twins sensed something. But at least they weren't pushing me; the blondes were so happy to have me back that they seemed to accept anything. And I couldn't deny that I was happy to be with them again. They hugged me, kissed me, and I needed to feel them close, to touch them, and they were... so relieved.

"How the hell did they find her so easily?"

"Our enemy had our mate in their hands, at their disposal. What did they want with her? They've beaten and maltreated her; they've left us a message! We deserve to make them suffer! Give them war!" said Dominic and Kurt, pacing around, while I noticed that Logan was thankfully missing.

As time went on, I was no longer afraid, but felt a little sorry for them. Dominic and Kurt didn't have hatred or resentment, but fear, a deep fear of losing my friend, and I shared that feeling. They stayed with her, holding her hand and caring for her, looking at her with love, if that was possible. I didn't know what to think.

Dominic and Kurt were crying just seeing her in that state, and I could tell the whole pack was suffering for her. Their uncle Oscar came by sometimes to offer comfort, but there was nothing more anyone could do. We are humans, Doctor Karim helped, and they asked for the best treatment and medicine, but Maddie was in the same state. We just have to wait.

"The warriors haven't found them."

"There are no traces left"

"Logan hasn't turned up either," said other wolves who came to explain the situation, and it was obvious it wasn't good.

"Robin, please, you have to tell us what happened," Dominic begged me when they couldn't take it anymore. They no longer came with shouts or bad manners; I could really see those desperate eyes.

"Mate, you can talk to them. I know we didn't get off to the best start, and I know the humans have suffered a lot at the hands of the wolves. Now we understand, but the situation can get worse if we don't know what's going on," my mates pleaded.

"They are our alphas... we trust them with our lives"

"Gerard is an Alpha who will do anything to destroy us and take advantage of the humans. You saw it when they took you, they will continue if no one stops them, they won't stop until they have finished us," Dominic said, looking at me seriously. His eyes were red and swollen from crying for my friend, his hand was shaking, and he was desperate, and I swallowed hard.

"Maddie was scared... so I did everything I could to escape," I told them in a low voice, and I saw the pain in the twins' eyes as they understood that I had left them without looking back. And I thought the worst part was confessing that I had helped Maddie, but all that seemed forgotten with the simple phrase: that Maddie was afraid.

"Scared of us?" Kurt asked and I heard him gasp. If there was a way to describe suffering, it would be their face.

"Maddie was scared and... she's my friend. I had to help her... I really didn't want to leave you," I confessed to the twins, surprised to feel the tears in my eyes.

"Mate, oh mate..." the twins said as they hugged me.

"Who helped you escape?"

"No one, I investigated as best I could as she didn't leave the room, and we prepared it in advance and at the ceremony it just... happened," I explained, but they didn't seem entirely convinced. I'm afraid they don't believe me.

"Did you contact Gerard? How?" Dominic asked growling.

"No! We wanted to get away from the wolf world and also warn the human town," I replied agitated, praying that they would believe me. How can they believe that we are allied with a man who is capable of doing this to Maddie?

"It makes sense, Alpha. They was just trying to survive. We wolves have done too much damage to the humans and these are the consequences," Liam said with conviction. Dominic and Kurt seemed upset and also lost, as they had no more information about Gerard.

"I swear we had nothing to do with those wolves. We thought we had reached the town and were trying to contact someone who could help us, and suddenly they ambushed us," I explained hastily.

"How did they know you were there?" the brothers asked me, but I had no answers.

"Are you still afraid of us, mate?" the blondes asked me as they put me to bed. One always stayed with me to look after me and comfort me, while the other helped the triplets.

"A little less," I replied, but I didn't know what to say.

"You don't have to lie to us, mate..." they said, caressing my face as I cuddled up to them. We stayed in silence, and they asked me the question I feared the most.

"Who is Luna afraid of? Her mates?"

"They only want the best for her. We need to know if there's trouble in the pack; we're all in danger," they said, hugging me tightly.

And I felt that I couldn't hide it any longer, that maybe sooner or later this would come out and at least everyone would try to solve the problem.

"Logan... he is the problem, Logan... he threatened Maddie," I whispered... and all hell broke loose.
