Chapter 77: The mole

Dominic

"Are you sure?"

"Yes, alpha, it seems Logan is trying to avoid the ceremony at all cost," the warrior says, accompanied by Lionel.

"You were right alpha, we followed Arthur and no doubt he's involved, though we haven't seen him meet with Logan yet."

“That bastard is way too clever” I growl.

"Any idea what his plan is? I mean, he can throw a tantrum like a spoiled child, but all the wolf laws we know protect us," I say, the twin seems nervous.

"It seems he wants to bring the council with him."

"What?" my brother and I ask at the same time.

"Would he dare? Not long ago, the Council ruled in our favor!" Kurt yells.

"The Golden Boys have never let us down, now is not the time for doubt," my wolf growls.

"Then that means he has a plan, something well-thought-out," I sigh in despair, running my hand over my head.

"If that's the case, we have to prepare ourselves. But how?" Kurt is very worried.

My wolf is begging me to take Maddie far away. I'm afraid something might happen, but I know it's not the best option; it's just my need to keep her safe, away in my arms.

"I have a theory that he must have found out about our plans to go to the Council and demand the protection of the humans, with a Human Luna we have the right to them, we must protect them" Lionel says, and it doesn't seem far-fetched.

"You are right… It's all about the humans. They want the women, the territories, to continue to dominate them, and let's face it... we wolves have been like that for a long time," I point out.

"But Maddie has changed us," Kurt sighs. A lot has happened since we found out that she's our mate, and since we became aware of all the damage we've done to her and her people.

"What do we do?" Lionel asks. The warrior confirms that we have some of the pack on our side, but I can't stop worrying.

"We need to gather information, plan ahead..." I suggest.

"Wait, wait... if Logan knows about our plan with the council... that means there's a spy among us, a traitor, a mole," Kurt whispers and we all fall silent.

"Damn it, it's true!"

"I think it might be someone closer," I say thoughtfully.

"Those involved in organizing the ceremony," Kurt suggests.

"Yes... that must be it. Let's keep our communications closed, stay extremely vigilant," I instruct, and we end the meeting.

"What do you think?" I ask Kurt once we're alone. By the goddess, this is a tragedy.

"Really? I doubt even my uncle, Vera, everyone. I only trust you, the twins, Maddie and Robin, nothing else."

"I have to say, I feel the same way," I confess, but we have to keep going; the ceremony is getting closer.

"Is everything okay?" Maddie asks the next day.

"We're just working out a few things, mate. We just want the ceremony to be perfect," I answer.

"It's Logan, isn't it?" I sigh.

"Yeah, he's probably planning something, but you're safe, believe me. We'll do everything we can to make sure nothing happens to you, I promise, love" I confirm and give her a soft kiss.

We walk around the pack. The twins had started spreading the rumor that Maddie was Robin's friend and that's why she was with us. Of course, the information may have leaked out, but we couldn't make anything official until tomorrow, when the ceremony takes place.

If it was up to me, it would be today; I didn't want to risk anything, but my uncle was too strict, refusing to change anything and of course denying any bad intentions on Logan's part.

"It's alright. I trust you," she said, taking my hand and stroking the scar she had made years ago. It was strange, but many times before I spoke to her again, I looked at that scar and thought of her. She had impacted me long before. How could I not have noticed?

"Thank you, mate... thank you for everything,"

I couldn't believe that my brother would conspire against our own mate. But right here I make a promise: if I have to go against him, I will, but she will be saved, and so will the humans.

When I take her to our room, I see that everything is ready for tomorrow, and she looks at her things with excitement. I notice that she carefully takes off her watch, always taking it with her as if it were something precious.

"Is this watch from someone special?"

"My father gave it to me... when you arrived, he left to see if he could find better opportunities and..."

"To fight us, I get it," I add and she nods.

"I haven't seen him since the day he said goodbye to me," she says sadly.

Damn it... we broke that watch!I

“I'm so sorry mate, for everything” I pull her closer and think only of us resting tonight when I see my mother's necklace.

"I would like you to wear it again, if you agree," I ask.

"It is very beautiful... when I ran away, I left it behind. I didn't want it to get lost," she confesses, and I find this very endearing. But the memory of her running away from us makes me panic again.

"I promise we'll give you plenty of reasons to stay," I say and immediately put the necklace on her. It was long and rested between her breasts.

"I already have several reasons, two at least…" she says, and stands on tiptoe to kiss me.

"You really are a fantastic Luna. Our mother would have been thrilled to meet you. She was an amazing wolf. She-wolves are very special. But you, Maddie... you're amazing," I tell her, and suddenly her expression changes.

"What is it, mate?"

"She-wolves... it's just..."

"Please, you can tell me," I persuade her, and finally she explains, leaving me stunned.

"There's a she-wolf who talked to me, you know, before I ran away. She told me I could reject all of you, and she threatened me," she says. I take her by the shoulders gently, distraught.

"Who?"

"I was so scared, and I didn't tell you, and then everything happened between us, we made up, and..."

"I believe you, mate. You just have to tell me. What's this woman's name?"

"I don't know... it's that beautiful girl who talked to you about the ceremony the other day, blonde, tall..." she answers, and I'm in shock. My wolf growls and I hug her.

Irina... why did I not think of her before? She must be the key informant feeding information to Logan. She's always been on his side. I never should have let her come between us.

What else has she done that I don't know about? The restful night with my mate is now a lost plan, and I immediately call the twins and my brother.

That she-wolf will pay for this!
