Chapter 89: The golden trio
Robin
"We must find a solution."
"Our mate is in danger and we can't let that happen."
"First they went after Luna, and they could easily go after Robin," I heard the twins arguing. They were so stressed that they had forgotten to use the mindlink
I was completely distraught. What I had experienced in the last few hours seemed like madness. My friend was alone and unprotected, her mates were trapped, my twins had doubts about the Alpha, and the entire pack seemed to be against us.
I had watched the whole scene with horror, her being dragged away, unable to do anything to stop it, and I had screamed and cried so much that I was hoarse.
"We have to get out of here to protect her," they kept arguing, and I suddenly stood up.
"We're not going to do any of that," I said. It was the first time I had spoken since they had taken her.
"Mate? What are you saying?"
"I'm saying we can't run away like rats and leave not only Maddie to her fate, but the pack and the alphas as well." They looked at me in surprise. Liam came closer to look me in the eye, like he was afraid I wasn't okay. I wasn't okay!
"Mate... this is very dangerous. The pack should be the safest place for both of you, and if it's in danger, we can't let you..."
"No, you can't do that. You can't put me in danger, but you can't put Maddie in danger either. You have a duty to her, to everyone!" I shouted. I thought they would tell me that I had completely lost my mind, but no, they listened to me.
"If everything I've heard in the last few hours is true, we're in big trouble. It doesn't matter where I go, we won't be safe. And what's worse, I could lose my best friend. The integrity of the pack is at stake, too, and I may be very human, as everyone insists on mentioning, but I have values and I keep my promises. Above all, I'm a good friend and I won't leave her!" I say firmly. Liam sighed and looked at his brother.
"Our little goddess is right," he looked distraught.
"Mate, our wolves are begging us to protect you from everything, that you are more important than anything else. We're desperate because of everything that's going on, but we would die if anything happened to you. We've marked you; there's no turning back," Lionel says, looking at me with tear-filled eyes. I stroke his face, trying to comfort him.
"And do you think that because I'm not a wolf, I won't die if something happens to you? But we have to do something; we have to have a plan, beyond just run away. Maddie was always the one with the plans, the brilliant one, but we can do something."
"Help our alphas," Liam replied.
"Exactly! I know the Alphas are in danger, but if we can help her, we can save them, too," I explain.
"Our mate has beauty and brain..." Lionel said, giving me a sad smile. I was glad to be listened to so well; ever since I had met wolves, I had imagined them to got their way, but no, my mates were different.
"But for that we have to leave the pack and I think I have a plan," Liam hinted and I hugged them.
"We'll make it works mate, of course we will," and we started to make a scheme that we had to execute as soon as possible, because time was running against us. I didn't like the plan very much, but we were desperate.
"You're going to do what?" Logan asked.
I looked at him with folded arms. He could be the Alpha now and concentrate a lot of power while calming the pack, and supposedly his appointment was imminent, but to me, he was a real asshole who had rejected my friend and put her in danger. He didn't deserve my forgiveness or hers.
"We found threats against our mate, and as you can imagine, we can't just leave her here," Liam explained.
"So what do you plan? Leave her in the human world as if nothing had happened? And besides, leave the pack?"
"Of course not. I will stay here to fulfill my protective duties while Liam makes sure our mate is safe."
If I had to be separated from one of them, it disturbed me greatly, but it was necessary to avoid arousing suspicion. Everyone knew that I was close to Maddie and that my mates were loyal to the brothers.
"I understand," Logan seemed to believe us, at least. "I expect that when you return and resume your duties as betas under my command," he emphasized seriously. He was a bold man, and I doubted that my mates would back down out of respect for his power as Alpha, but once again, they were there for me.
"No, Alpha," Lionel says, and Logan's eyes widened.
"What did you say?"
"We are loyal to the pack, but also to the triplets. All in all, it's not a fraction of them."
"Have you completely lost your mind?"
"With all due respect, Alpha, it seems you're the one who's out of your mind," Liam replied, and Logan looked like his eyes were going to pop out.
"Our duty is to the safety of the pack, and without the triplets together, the pack will never be safe. We will take care of proving that; you know very well that something bad is happening," Lionel whispered, and Logan remained silent. The meeting ended tense and we had already prepared our things.
"It's time to go before Logan changes his mind or someone else discovers us," Liam mentioned. And now came the worst part: I had to say goodbye to Lionel, and I felt my heart break.
"You're going to do it, mate, you're going to help and save our Luna. Today, you acted like a real beta, my love. I couldn't be prouder," he whispered.
"I don't like this," I sobbed.
"We'll be reunited soon, you'll see, and we'll never be separated again, the three of us," he replied, and he gave me a kiss that seemed to be aimed at making sure that I wouldn't forget him and that I would think of his lips every second of my life.
"Go now, find our Luna. I will take care of helping the alphas."
Lionel was the older of the two by minutes, and he made the sacrifice of leaving me. I watched him from afar, praying to the moon, or whoever could hear, to let me see him again.
