Chapter 128: Our territory
Maddie
"My family used to live there. These lands were partly ours. Behind them are the lands of Robin’s family," I whisper and point with my hand. He steps closer to me and looks at me sadly.
“I’m so sorry, mate. I know what we have done is unforgivable, and honestly, I’d be desperate and angry too if someone had taken my land,” he says. That's exactly how I feel. Things have changed, I feel part of the pack, but I can’t forget what happened, my past. I know that my mates are taking care about my family and that the situation is delicate, but I could never forget my mother and brother.
“Why did you do this?” I ask, not accusingly, but just to really know. Kurt looks distressed, sighs and runs his hand through his face and hair, messing it up.
“It was a territory that the Night Wolves were completely obsessed with. They wanted to conquer it and with it all you — every human. That’s why we insisted that you leave as quickly as possible,” he says, looking down at the ground in shame. I stroke his face to calm him down and ease his worries. It wasn’t my intention to bring up these bad memories, but they’re there… it’s unavoidable.
“You should have talked to us, explained what happened. Maybe we could have helped you, maybe we could have helped each other,” I say. He sighs and pulls me into a hug.
“I realize now that we could have worked together, that we could have cooperated, that you would have understood. We always wanted you to know that we existed, and that our coexistence was peaceful. Maybe that’s why all these bad things are happening. Truly, together we are stronger.”
“Wise words from a very wise Alpha,” I say, looking at him with adoration.
“I would have been wiser if I had accepted you right away. There are so many things we’ve done wrong, mate, that I know it’s a miracle you accepted us and have done so much for us. Despite everything that has happened, you’re still here. I want you to know that Dom and I don’t take that for granted. We’ll fight every day to truly deserve you,” he says sincerely, and I can’t help but lean in to kiss him.
“As you said, we can do this together. We just have to trust each other.”
“I trust you to the end, Maddie,” he whispers. I smile at his devotion and love—a love I never thought I’d feel, especially from these wolves. A love that I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world.
“I know there’s something you want to tell me, but you haven’t dared yet,” I whisper, and his expression shifts. “You’re very perceptive, Maddie. And yes, you’re right, but we have our reasons for not saying anything… for now, at least. While I can’t promise we won’t need to talk about it at some point, I think right now we just want to live in our bubble of happiness. The moments when we’ll have to make hard decisions will come. But for now, let these two stubborn Alphas face what they have to face,” he says honestly, and all I can do is nod.
I’m sure it’s about Logan. It all comes down to Logan—us three being together. Or rather, my acceptance of the older brother. Until recently, the problem was that Logan didn’t want me. But now we’re in a situation where he has accepted that I’m Luna, though he hasn’t accepted me as his mate. And I have to decide because I know it’ll happen sooner or later. If I want him as my mate, I’ll have to let him mark me. I know that if I don’t, I’ll lose the others—my two devoted mates, the ones I love without a doubt.
“I understand,” I say, and we lapse into silence for a while. Some warriors arrive with information, speak with Kurt, and offer us drinks. Everyone is so attentive that I feel increasingly comfortable. Kurt issues orders to the other warriors when an idea occurs to me.
“Do you know why they were so obsessed with that territory?” “We investigated for a while, but we never found anything. Maybe it’s something we should look into again,” he replies, now excited, as he goes to fetch some old books and maps.
Several warriors arrive, and I overhear him talking. It seems they’ve come with news about Alpha Oscar. It’s a sensitive issue; my mates are unsure how to deal with their uncle. The old Alpha caused a lot of harm, but I understand that for the triplets, it’s a tough decision. After all, that man and his wife are the only family they have left, and that’s not something to take lightly.
“Alpha Logan intercepted some messages from the former Alpha,” a warrior reports.
“Messages? What kind of messages? To whom?” Kurt asks, his voice filled with concern. Something bad is happening. Oscar is supposed to be confined with only Vera.
“We don’t know yet; they seem to be coded. Alpha Logan is trying to analyze and decipher them. We don’t know who they were meant for.”
“Damn it!” Kurt exclaims. “And Vera?”
“Still not talking.”
“This is all too strange,” Kurt replies as a warrior approaches me with a tray, and I am surprised.
“Here’s what you requested, Luna,” he says, handing me a cup of my favorite tea.
“Oh, wow, thank you so much,” I respond. As I pour the tea, a small note falls out, addressed to me. It’s handwritten, but I don’t recognize the writing. How did this note reach me? It feels like a mix of a reminder and a threat, and I have no idea who could have sent it.
“Are you okay, mate?” Kurt asks from a distance, noticing my sudden tension. I feel a wave of nervousness and, without knowing why, I hide the message.
“Yes, yes, I’m fine,” I say, clutching the crumpled paper in my hand. Once he walks away, I glance at it again and carefully read what it says. It’s just a couple of sentences, nothing more. I still have no idea how it got to me or who sent it.
“We know where you are, and you can be of great help to us. Always remember where you come from, Madeleine.”
