Chapter 136: Cry for help

Logan

I turned the page and saw something that chilled my blood: pictures. They were photographs of wolves, or what had once been wolves. Their bodies were deformed, their eyes empty, their claws grotesquely long. These were not the wild beasts we had faced before. These creatures were worse, more deadly. And the Council was behind it all.

I followed my gaze to a display case at the back of the room. It was partially destroyed, but inside were jars of strange liquids, of different colours and viscosities. It was clear that more than simple tests had been conducted here. They had tampered with the wolves' nature and created something unnatural.

As I approached the table, I saw something that made me stop: a file with the name of a wolf I knew. "Subject 16: Status - Terminated. Target awaits to attack human cities."

"They'll scare the humans and the Council will take control," my wolf said. My chest hurt and an idea began to form in my mind. Perhaps the humans would ask the packs for help... or the Night Wolves would offer their help. Anything was possible. It would be a catastrophe.

I felt anger rising in my chest. I knew the Council couldn't be trusted, but this was worse than I could have imagined. They had played with our lives, with our nature, and now they were going after the humans.

"Maddie... maybe a Luna could rule the humans? She was the link to them, and they wanted her. But most of all, they wanted the women" Morgan growls.

My hand trembled as I held the documents, proof of the betrayal. They created these beasts. They released them into the world without regard for the consequences, and now it was only a matter of time before they were used as weapons. My thoughts were interrupted by a cry.

"Alpha!" I saw a warrior being slammed into a wall and dying. I could not lose any more of my men! The screams only intensified the tension that was crawling under my skin. My warriors moved beside me, alert, but they weren't ready for what was coming.

Then I saw them. Sweet Moon Goddess.

They were enormous. Creatures that must have once been wolves, now deformed and stripped of all traces of humanity. Their grotesque, scarred bodies were evidence of the Council's failed experiments.

The creatures I had faced before were nothing, like something out of a fairy tale; these were terrifying and strong as rocks. A shiver ran down my spine. This wasn't a nightmare. These things were real. And they were here to kill us.

"By the moon..." I muttered, more to myself than to anyone else. These were the same beasts that had destroyed the lab. These were the experiments, the creatures made to terrorize humans.

I didn't have time to think. The creatures came at us with a speed that didn't match their size. I barely had time to shout an order before one of them slammed into another warrior, crushing him to the ground. His cry was short, cut off by the sickening sound of breaking bones. I knew there was no hope for him.

"Protect yourselves!" I roared, grabbing a piece of metal and hurling it at the nearest beast. The steel hit its tough skin, barely making a superficial cut. Damn. I spun quickly, dodged its claws and landed another blow with all my strength, this time driving the metal into its neck.

The creature growled and thrashed wildly, but I didn't give in. I twisted the metal and sliced through its throat. It collapsed at my feet, but there was no time to celebrate. Not while I could still hear the screams of my men.

Around me, my warriors fought, but it was clear that we wouldn't all make it out of here. The beasts were too many. And too strong.

I tried to concentrate, to find the mental connection to my brothers. "Dominic, Kurt, can you hear me?" I called into my mind with all my strength, but there was no answer. Only emptiness. I was too far away. Too far to feel the connection.

"Damn it," I growled, turning just in time to avoid another attack. This was a lost battle if help didn't arrive soon.

"Matt!" I called, panting from the effort of staying on my feet. "Run. Get help. We won't last much longer." I yelled, and the warrior looked at me worriedly. Karim had already lost one mate... she couldn't lose another. Who would have thought...? I was a sentimental Alpha, a romantic. Maybe I had a half-human heart after all.

Matt looked at me, his face reflecting the fear I felt, but he nodded with determination. I watched him run between the trees, his form disappearing into the darkness of the forest. I hoped he would make it.

I turned back to the fight. We were trapped. There was no other word to describe the situation. The beasts outnumbered us, and though we fought with everything we had, it wasn't enough. I struck another creature, wounding it, but it barely retreated before it attacked me again. I tried to draw its attention, praying that it wouldn't attack any more of my warriors.

'Goddamn Council" I yell as I struggled to stay upright.

"They knew" Morgan whispers, "They knew that we had found the lab, that I was looking for answers. And those creatures... those things were their answer. They were hunting us"

My thoughts darkened. The Council would do anything to cover up the truth. I knew I was in danger. And if I survived this fight, I knew what was to come would be even worse.

"They want blood, and they're going to get it!" Morgan screamed in my head, begging to stand in front of those monsters, to show his worth, to prove who was an Alpha.

"Stay alert! Take cover!" I yelled to my men, who didn't seem to know what to do. And who the hell would? None of them had ever faced anything like this before. I had to get them out alive, had to keep us alive, had to fight to warn others and prove what I had found.

But then something else crossed my mind, a thought that hurt more than any blow or wound.

Madeleine.

Her face appeared in my head, her eyes full of pain and suspicion. She didn't want anything to do with me, not after everything that had happened. And I... I had pushed her away. All to protect her. At least that's what I told myself.

Would she ever forgive me?

"Come on, you damned beast!" I shouted, drawing the monster towards me with heavy steps. Everyone here had families: parents, mates, children. I only had two brothers who didn't trust me. And her.

A roar rumbled in my chest as I dodged another angry attack. I didn't have time to think about it now. But the fear was there, just below the surface. I knew I'd made mistakes, hurt her, and now I wondered if I'd ever have the chance to make amends.

Would I even survive to ask for her forgiveness?

I forced myself to focus. "Not now," I told myself. "Survive first. Then worry about everything else."

"Alpha, look out!"
