Chapter 25: I am in their hands

Maddie

As soon as I got out of the car, I ran frantically to my house. It seemed that the police and fire department had ordered an evacuation of the area.

No doubt there had been an attack, and I saw the small town bar in flames and firefighters cordoning off the whole place.

That bar... I remember going there with Mark a few years ago.
He bought me my first beer and now it was all destroyed.

My heart skips a beat when I see my mom wearing a coat and looking worried, looking in every direction. But when she sees me, she is shocked.

"Mom!"

"Maddie? Maddie!" she says, running to meet me, and for that moment, as I hug her, everything seems okay. She cries and so do I.

"My baby... But how? Where have you been? Are you okay?" she asks, pulling back and looking at me.

"I'm fine, Mom..." I tell her, unable to believe that she is standing right in front of me.

"Who are they?" she asks, scared, and I guess they are behind me.

They let me run because what else was I going to do, escape? They would have hunted me down, and besides, I had a deal with Logan, he knew that.

"Calm down, Mom..."

"Are they wolves? What are you doing with those men?" she asks, horrified, as I feel Logan and Kurt's presence on either side of me.

"They... I was working with them, Mom..."

"Working? Why did they keep you isolated for so long? We knew nothing about you," she says, and I hear Kurt talking.

"I'm sorry, ma'am... it was just for security reasons," he seems worried, as if apologizing.

"What does that mean? Mark and Kevin were terrified and searched for you for days. Your brother was convinced that wolves had kidnapped you!" my mother says desperately, and I hear the brothers growl at the mention of those names.

"And Mark was right, Mom, I was kidnapped, but not by them. They... rescued me," I say hesitantly, and the brothers come closer.

"Really?"

"Yes, Mom. And as you know, there are fights between the wolves, so I couldn't leave or come here because it would put you all in danger. I'm their witness, I'm working with them to make everything safer," I say when I hear another voice behind my mother.

"Maddie? What are you doing with these bastards?" Mark asks, and I see him limping with Kevin behind him, who can't believe what he's seeing. How do I explain to them what is really going on?

"Brother..." I say, and as I move closer to him, I feel Logan's hand on my arm, holding me back. My brother approaches cautiously.

"How could you bring these wolves here? They attacked us! They want to destroy the town! We've been looking for you for so long, and you're coming with them?" says Mark.

Kevin stays behind, his hands clenched into fists, looking at me in shock. My breathing accelerates and I feel my heartbreaking.

"It wasn't us..." Kurt replies, seeming to keep himself from starting a fight.

"Mark... I'm fine, trust me. And the town will be fine too. I'm doing everything I can."

"You can't be serious..." he says, hugging my mom.

"You've seen them, and they are fine... it's time to go and fulfill your deal," Logan whispers very quietly into my ear.

"We promise it won't happen again," Kurt says confidently.

"Do you think we trust you, beasts?" shouts Mark, and the brothers growl.

"Time to say goodbye, Madeleine..." Logan says firmly, and my mother gasps.

"Go? Are you going back with them?" she asks in disbelief.

"Believe me, you won't be safe if I'm here, but we'll meet again," I say, pulling my arm out of Logan's grip and hugging my mother. The sobs coming from her chest make my heart ache, but I have to keep up my facade.

I'm doing it for her, I'll see her again.

When I try to hug my brother, he steps back, and I don't know what to do, because this was the most important part of the plan. I put my hand on the broken watch my father gave me, and he looks at me curiously.

"You promised to take care of us... you promised him," I tell him, and he seems to understand. I come closer, and he hugs me and I whisper very softly.

"Keep that look, like you don't care about me. I'm trapped, but I know how to escape, and I have to find a way for all of us to escape after this. Mark, we have to go far away. And please don't let Kevin get close to us” I pull back, and his expression is inscrutable. But I know him well, he will support me.

"You're right, I promised to take care of you... but you're not part of this family anymore," he says, and without the others seeing, I smile at him.

"Mark..." my mother says, worried.

"No, Mom... wherever Dad is, he would be totally disappointed in his daughter. Do you know all he has to do to buy this watch? How much it cost? I trusted you, and you threw yourself to the wolves," he says, turning and leaving with Kevin.

I pretend that his words affect me. My mother hugs me once more, and I promise her that everything will be all right.

When I turned to see the brothers, they didn't seem to suspect anything. Kurt seems affected by this strange reunion and tries to wipe away my tears, while Logan looks very satisfied.

In the distance, I see Robin with her parents, hugging and kissing and crying desperately. She doesn't have to act; she can cry and say that she loves them and that she has to go with the wolves. She even promises to see them again without a doubt. The twin looks desperate.

And when we get back in the car, Robin hugs me and cries, and I take the opportunity to express my feelings as well.

"We promise to take care of her, we swear it," the twin and Kurt say.

Yes... soon we will with our family… away. I know what my father has to do to buy that watch. He worked in the fabric, now abandoned.

That would be our reunion point, Mark was genius.

"It will be done Maddie... you'll see that oaths are very important and wolves do everything they can to keep them," Logan tells me in a threatening tone and I wonder what will happen when we get back to the house.

There are still several days to plan... and now I am completely in their hands. I belong to them to do whatever they want with me.
