Chapter 97: Helping without interfering
Robin
"Those bastards!" I shout angry, unable to believe the roller coaster that everything had become since we left the pack.
My heart felt incomplete. Leaving Lionel had been much harder than I had expected, and sometimes I would turn to my side and search for him with my eyes, only to remember that he had stayed behind. My sweet sweet mate, my blondie.
Luckily, Liam was in constant contact with his brother, keeping us updated on what was going on inside, though there wasn't much news about the Alpha brothers. And Maddie... well, we had to find her; that was all that mattered right now.
"We knew what was happening with the Council was bad, but I never imagined something like this," Liam sighed as we followed the council members.
"If we suspected they were involved, there's no doubt about it now" we had tracked them down, followed several of their members, and discovered that a group was constantly heading to what they call the Black Forest, a dark and terrifying place where we believe they have my friend. I swear, I wish I had a wolf to just go in and tear those men apart.
"They're bastards, savages! Leaving her there! What are they planning?" I ask, distraught.
"I don´t know mate. I still can't believe they're not even following the rite!" Liam exclaims, surprised. He kept talking about the rite like it was something important. Frankly, it all sounded very confused and barbaric to me.
"They just want to finish her off!" I exclaim.
"I guess deep down I thought they were upholding the legitimacy of our traditions, mate. The rite is something extremely important and rigorous within the wolf beliefs. It has never been taken lightly, and although Irina had no right to propose it to our Luna, any council would have taken it seriously. Instead, this is just a hunt..." he explains, and what he said made a lot of sense.
We saw a group of men in cars surrounding different parts of the forest. We also approached in a small car, trying not to attract attention, as it would be very strange for a couple to be nearby, and it would be terrible if they found us and discovered who we truly are.
"Do you think we have to go into the woods? And what if they find us?"
"Unfortunately, I think that's what we'll have to do. The forest is big enough to get lost in, and maybe we can go unnoticed, and if we meet one of them, we'll have to finish him off," my mate confirmed, and I felt a shiver run down my spine.
As we entered, I felt a deep fear. It was like looking for a needle in a haystack. We came armed, and I insisted on bringing wolfsbane. I was human, and though I couldn't match the strength of a werewolf, that didn't mean I came unprepared, oh no sir!
"Don't worry, mate. I know our Luna's scent. This isn't the first time we've searched for her, remember? I will find her" he said, and I watched in amazement as he followed the scent for a little while.
“She is close…she should be hiding” he says, and when I looked around me, a mountain seemed to be the most logical place for a human to hide.
"That would be a perfect place to hide," I pointed out.
"I think you're right," he said. Suddenly we heard a terrible growl and I tried to hold back a scream.
"What on earth...?" Liam said as we saw a beast, a massive wolf standing on its hind legs, roaring like mad. It looked like a mountain of fur, teeth and claws.
Liam stood in front of me, protecting me, in seconds, he transformed into his wolf form and attacked the beast while I readied a rifle filled with wolfsbane bullets. I began shooting wildly, but it seemed that nothing could stop this beast. My mate continued to fight fiercely until the beast finally collapsed, exhausted, and he delivered a final blow, leaving it to bleed to death.
"That was incredible..." I said. Just then, we spotted a figure coming out from behind the mountain, and I was astonished to see that it was my friend. I wanted to call out to her, but Liam covered my mouth.
"What's wrong?" I whispered, and he showed me that she was fine and that she also had a small wolf close to her, she seems to help the animal.
"It's the rite... the wolf guardian is real, it's happening," he said in surprise. When I tried to intervene again, he grabbed my shoulders and looked at me excited.
"We came to help Maddie, but she can do this. She's strong, look at her!" he pointed out. I felt a wave of pride: not only was she alive, but she was taking care of the little wolf.
"She's a real Luna," I murmured.
"That's right. We mustn't interfere, but that doesn't mean we won't help her. We'll take out all the enemies that aren't part of this plan, this ritual," Liam confirmed.
Although I didn't completely agree, I understood what he meant. It seemed like the perfect moment for my friend to demonstrate her full potential, and to be honest, she seemed to be doing very well.
We watched her for a long time and I felt satisfied. We planned to bring some supplies to help her tomorrow, maybe some ammunition and a knife.
"The wolf will help and protect her..." he told me as night fell and we had to return to the car.
I didn't want to; it broke my heart to leave her there alone, but wolves seemed to have these theories that sometimes you have to prove yourself and trust in your own strength. But just as we were about to leave the forest, we encountered men from the Council, and I felt that a fight was imminent.
"What are you doing here?" they asked us suspiciously, knowing we weren't just passing through.
"What brings you to the Black Forest? Answer!" they demanded.
"Get ready, mate. Maddie is our Luna, but you are also a beta. And you're much more powerful than you think," he whispered to me.
