Chapter 48: Irina
Logan
"Irina... what the hell do you mean?" I asked the she-wolf.
She and I had had our moments. She was the most beautiful woman in the pack, the one everyone wanted as a mate, and I knew it was only a matter of time before one or more of the bastards took her from me. I saw her long legs, her sculpted body, her green eyes, and her long blonde hair.
She was a strong warrior, one of the best, and her lineage was one of the oldest in the pack. In short, she was the ideal choice for a mate, but we all know that wasn't the case... thanks to the moon goddess who had played against us.
Irina had been smart enough to get close to me, to seek my favor. I knew she had tried with my brothers, but they were more stubborn and believed in the natural order of things, while I was more ambitious.
"I mean, there is a possibility that I saw some humans leaving the packhouse a few hours ago," she says, approaching me, and I feel my blood boil.
"She knew... how did she know?" my wolf Morgan whispered to me.
How could she have so much knowledge, to the point of anticipating my plans? She puts her hands on my chest and presses her body against mine, as she had done several times before, as if it was the most natural thing in the world for us to be so close. But I grab her arms and pull her close to me.
"What is your game, Irina? How do you know what happened?" I say, looking into her eyes, but she doesn't flinch.
"She knows more, much more," Morgan whispered to me. If he ever had an affinity for her, he obviously doesn't anymore. For wolves, only their mates exist; everything else is nothing.
"Did you think you could fool me? Did you think you could pretend that I would never find out that you found your mate?" she replied haughtily. I suddenly released her, and she continued as if nothing had happened.
"That's not what happened."
"Oh, it is, but it turns out you promised one thing and then fate did another."
"I will not accept her," I reply.
"But your brothers will."
"I have a plan, and..."
"Then you admit that she is your destined and true mate! And above all a weak human who cannot be the Luna of this pack!" she mentions, waiting for my confirmation, because it's obvious that she already knows the truth.
I growl because I can't help it. She shouldn't talk to me like that, and she shouldn't talk about... I don't even want to think about it, not in the state Maddie has me in.
"She's a mistake," I whisper, and the words cause me pain just by saying them.
"She's a mistake you brought to your bed," she accuses me, and I approach her, glaring.
"I'm just playing with her. Like I told you, I had a plan. I wanted to get her out of my brothers' lives. The idea was that she would break their hearts," I say, and I know it doesn't sound good or right, but we wolves are going through a very dark time. If we don't have order and an Alpha to ensure our survival, to lead us to victory, to achieve the goals of the pack... we are finished.
There were many like Gerard who were willing to do anything, and many fools like our uncle who continued to hold out and avoid confrontation, and it couldn't go on.
"Well, either she is very intelligent and managed to escape without any of you noticed, or the enemy really has her," she says. I have to control my snarl; I hate being taken for a fool.
"Tell me what you know right now!" I say, pinning her against the wall. I feel her breasts pressing against my chest, the way she arched her back, seeking contact, seducing me. But not now.
"Never," my wolf says and I snort.
"They were running from the packhouse when the blackout happened, and I might have suggested the warriors to leave their positions and help the Alpha who was being beaten by his brothers..." I can't believe it; I really didn't give this woman enough credit.
"You helped her escape?" I said in a low voice.
"I actually helped you; you were being attacked by your brothers," she says, running her hands over my chest and dangerously down to my pants. I grabbed her immediately, stopping her advance.
"You couldn't have known any of this, you're lying," I say, still in denial.
"Well, for anyone who paid enough attention to these humans, it was obvious what they were going to do. They had been planning this for some time. The tall one, the mate of the Golden Boys, has been asking questions here and there, and you weren't very receptive to your mate, were you?" she says, showing me a perfect smile. I let go of her wrists in disgust.
"Do they have outside help? Is this all part of Gerard's plan?" I ask.
"I don't know. It seemed like they wanted to take the cars, and I told two warriors that they had problems, and it would be better to check them out, so the humans took the forest road, as you must already know... beyond that... I don't know..."
"Damn it!"
"You should have told me your plans; you know I'm always willing to help, especially if there's a stupid human you want out of the way. Maybe, if we're lucky... she won't be a problem anymore," she says happily. I push her against the wall, looking at her intently.
"You are very mistaken, Irina, if you think you can dominate me. No one can! I will be the Alpha of this pack, no matter what it takes, and from this moment on, if you don't start playing by my rules, you will be one of my enemies. Is that clear?" she looks at me in fear. Although I'm not sure that she's really afraid of me. She is a very difficult woman to understand and predict, and now I see that this is a big mistake.
"Whatever you say, Alpha..."
"I need you to investigate if Gerard is involved in this and what he wants," I say, releasing her and she shakes.
"It seems obvious. If the Three Dragons have a human mate, you will be the easiest target of all, and if I were him... I would test you and expose your weakness so that all the wolves and the rest of the packs get the message."
"What message?" I growl.
"That you are mortally wounded, that the pack is now easy prey," she says, and I swallow hard. I walk down the hall with the rest of the warriors. I am not looking for my mate, but for information.
My brothers can play heroes, but I was sure Maddie was alive, and though I didn't like Irina's words, they were right. It is possible that my mate fled on her own, but if she fell into the hands of the enemy or another wolf, we are finished.
