Chapter 173: The Duel
Maddie
"That's a lie, it can't be true," Logan growled as he walked with me towards where his brothers were.
"But it is true. He is my son, my only son. And because of the mistakes the triplets have made, Gerard has the right to fight for the position of Alpha and thus take over Moonvalley," Alpha Oscar said. He had disappeared, he had fled, and now he had returned like this. To make matters worse, Kurt confirmed everything through the mind link.
"Mafia told me. Apparently he's the unacknowledged son of Oscar with a human. He's our cousin." Kurt appeared covered in blood, and I could only imagine what that interrogation must have been like.
"This was all planned, that's what he wanted. That's why he wanted to keep the power of Alpha, to pass it on to his supposed son," Dominic commented.
"Can he do that? A duel?" I asked worried.
"I'm sorry, mate, but yes," Kurt replied, my heart racing.
"I've told you all before, nephews, you are not fit to lead the pack. I always knew Gerard was the one. He's claimed his own territory and built his own pack; he's a self-made Alpha. And therefore he deserves it much more than you three, spoiled brats who always had everything... Even an exceptional she-wolf, and you rejected her!"
"Lies! It's all lies!" Kurt howled.
"You were the one who told us we had to accept Maddie!"
"I never fed such madness! Logan accepted Irina!" Oscar shouted.
"You did, Logan, and then you broke my heart!" Irina cried.
"You proved yourselves to be Alphas, unworthy of leading this pack. And for that you should give up your power. Give it up now! You've tarnished the family legacy," Oscar shouted, and I couldn't believe what was happening.
"You hid Aunt Vera's other mate! You've done too many wrongs, Uncle! You've deceived and manipulated us," Kurt demanded. Oscar seemed stunned by the mention of Vera's other mate.
"Where did you get this information? That's madness!" the old Alpha shouted as the others looked at him curiously.
"Rowan, your chief warrior, he is her other mate, and you kept them apart!" my mate shouted. Logan looked confused, and I took his hand; he looked at me in fear.
"You have no proof!"
"You were with a human, weren't you, Uncle? You're speaking against our mate, and you had a child with a poor human! Why don't you tell us the story?" Kurt said, and I saw him signal some warriors to bring someone in. To my horror, it was the head of a wolf. "Mafia told us everything. Your bastard is with a human!"
"I would never be with a human!" Oscar said, staring at the body without flinching.
"What have you done to her? Where is she?" my mate insisted, Logan covering me, so I wouldn't see the scene.
"I've never done anything like that! Gerard and I are flawless alphas."
"Really? Why have you tried to destroy us for so long, to destroy our pack? And on top of that, you've been capturing humans, using them as slaves, taking women to be forced mates for your men," Kurt roared angrily.
"Again, boy, stop talking without proof!" But Kurt brought someone else, and I was stunned to see it was Kevin.
"This human claims to have made a deal with you, You would return the land as long as the humans lowered their guard with the Night Wolves, and provided human women. Alphas, Gentlemen, Lunas... These men who claim to be above reproach are immoral and violating the laws of the wolves. The Council should take note," Kurt shouted, showing a battered and frightened Kevin.
"We don't know this human. You're talking nonsense!" Gerard shouted.
"He threatened our mate!" Dominic growled.
"It's your human's word against ours," Gerard hissed with hatred.
"I made the deal. You know it's true! You gave me your word that you would protect and help us as long as we infiltrated this pack!" Kevin said. The allied Nightwolf Alphas seemed very concerned, but Gerard denied knowing Kevin, so easily it was frightening.
"I have no idea who this human is. He must have been hired to make false statements." Kevin squirmed and began to shout.
"Lair, lair!"
"It seems that your allies don't want to keep their promise. And entering our pack without our permission and attacking one of us is punishable by death. Sorry, not sorry," Kurt said and ripped Kevin's heart out in one swift motion as the young man screamed. He was dead. It all happened too fast.
"Good, he deserved it," my mates said, and before I knew it Logan stepped forward.
"What are you doing?" Dominic asked.
"I'm going to end this. I'm going to fight him."
"No, don't!" I cried and Logan looked into my eyes. I knew he was suffering and that he was going to sacrifice himself, and I hated it.
"I've made many mistakes, and we're all going to pay for them: the pack, you Madeleine. You've suffered too much because of us, and you don't deserve it. You deserve a peaceful life, the best in the world."
"Please, no!" I pleaded, but he seemed determined. He continued to move forward as my mates held me back.
"Members of the Council, Alphas, Lunas, much of what these Alphas have said is true. I declared Irina my mate in front of the pack, but my true mate is Madeleine, and I brought her through the rite. It was all on my uncle's recommendation, but I can't blame him for my actions. I'm an Alpha, raised to be one and to be responsible. I realized too late that she was the love of my life, and that when she accepted me, I became the Alpha I was always meant to be. Sharing her love with my brothers made me better. The night we sealed our bond was the greatest night of our lives. I must atone for my sins and prevent further harm. Thus, I accept this duel, Alpha Gerard”
