Chapter 47: A new opportunity
Kurt
"The Beta female is hiding something," my wolf Ajax whispered to me, but I didn't care. Robin was scared and obviously something more was going on here.
I couldn't think or even see clearly, I just remembered the image of blood in the factory, the emptiness, the dirt, the signs of a fight. I saw Dominic take the watch Maddie always wore... covered in blood.
She had been there; her scent still lingered...and we had lost her again.
I didn't remember anything about this town, and I realized that we had come to places like this, forcing the humans to leave, driving them from their lands, and we knew absolutely nothing about them, not even about our mate's life here! I only remembered the moments when she was in school, when we shared something together, but we never cared to know anything about the humans.
"What the hell is Gerard doing here?" Dom asked worriedly as we followed the trail.
He had brought the girls here, and our mate had managed to get her friend to escape by sacrificing herself. It didn't seem weird; Lunas make that kind of sacrifice... although I regretted it now. I preferred to have Maddie here in my arms at all costs.
"They have their eyes on us, don't doubt it for a second! They waited for their moment with our mate, they took advantage of it, our uncle gave them the chance to do as they pleased! Always in fear! We are Alphas! We are Moonvalley!" I said angrily.
Lionel was with us while Liam continued to hold his mate back, trying to get more information from her. My wolf was right; she was hiding something, but she has given us the clue we need. We knew they cared about each other, and for now, that was all we needed. For now.
"I don't know, something about this plan feels off," my brother said.
"What do you mean?"
"I don't think Gerard would expose the Night Wolves like that."
"Our mate wouldn't lie; if she says she heard and saw an Alpha named Gerard, it's because it's true!" Lionel replied indignantly.
"I'm sure of that, beta. We never discussed these things with her, so what she said is true. However, I think our enemy must have an ace up his sleeve, or these aren't his final plans," Dominic explained, and unfortunately, I think he's right.
"Robin was a loose end for them; they left her here in the human town, didn't take her to their pack. What are they planning?" he growled.
"That just means we have to be careful, and if we go to the councils, Gerard will say our mates are just making things up," Lionel said, and we nodded.
"Then let's not give them any reason to attack our mate or do anything else to her," Dom huffed, and the idea of not going with all our might disgusted me deeply, but if anything happened to Maddie, I would never forgive myself.
"The trail leads to an old farm, Alpha," one of our trackers said as we moved cautiously.
"I can smell at least five wolves around and another five inside. I think one of them is Mafia," my brother said, and I smiled. If that bastard wanted me to kick his lazy ass again, I'd be happy to.
"Could we take them down?" I asked.
"Maybe, but first we have to find out where Maddie is."
"I don't smell her," my wolf said worriedly. "She should be here; where the hell is she?"
"There's a faint scent on the ground," my brother added, concentrating.
"It could be a basement. Our mate says there was one in her previous house, on the land she was evicted from," our beta said, and I felt a pang of pain. The life we forced them to leave...
"Yes, that could be it!" Dominic seemed excited.
"Then we have to go in and leave them no choice. Whatever they want with our mate, the more time we give them, the more danger she'll be in," I explained.
What my brother was saying made sense. Alpha Gerard was an abusive psychopath, but he stayed in power because he knew how to handle things, control his image, avoid confrontation, but now he wouldn't get away so easily.
"Then let's attack from different points. I'll go left, you, Kurt, go right, Lionel, you take the back, and the rest stay here. This is our rendezvous point," my brother instructed.
I was glad that someone still had a cool head and didn't just rush in to destroy everything like I wanted to do. I felt my wolf pulsate with the idea of having our mate close by.
"Now!" I whispered, giving the order, and we moved like lightning.
I came upon one of the wolves, who seemed not to have seen us coming, and quickly killed it without even transforming. I could feel the footsteps of my brother on the other side and our beta, all in sync. The warriors were screaming and there was death all around us.
I looked through one of the windows and saw Mafia running; it seemed they had seen us coming and were fleeing like rats. Bastards!
It was a risky plan; we didn't know if more enemies would show up, if it was a trap or an ambush, but there was no time to waste. The barn was empty and showed no signs of life. It wasn't a base of operations, and whatever wolves were there had either fled or been killed by us.
If we hadn't been observing all this for a while, it could almost seem like this place was empty, and we were just here for fun.
"Where is she?" Dominic howled.
"This isn't normal!" Ajax shouted in my head, and I felt a deep fear, but it was all gone when I heard a plank on the floor move as I walked by and started to move the plank, realizing that there was indeed something underneath.
"Follow Gerard's scent! He's been here, I'm sure!" my brother shouted, now helping me lift the plank.
"Stairs!" he shouted excitedly, and I descended them two at a time. I could swear the world was reborn when I saw her.
"Mate!" Maddie was gagged, bruised and beaten, and I felt my blood boil.
"Oh Maddie, Maddie..."
My brother untied the ropes from her hands and feet, and when he got her out of the chair, he held her so she wouldn't collapse. She was badly hurt and unconscious.
"Our beautiful mate is finally safe." I couldn't believe it. After the agonizing hours we had spent, to have her here alive was as if the Goddess had answered our prayers.
My brother handed her to me to hold while he began to give orders. I was briefly aware that he was asking me to investigate who had been here and who these wolves were, why they had left her hidden here.
While I just looked at her face and stroked her cheek, grateful to see her again, to have the chance to be different, to earn her respect and love.
We would do this right, no matter what it took.
