Chapter 140: Rescue in the midst of attack
Dominic
We run through the forest at full speed. The sound of our boots hitting the ground is barely audible while I´m panicking. Kurt is beside me, his face tense, his jaw clenched, as if he's ready to pounce on anything in our way. We know that Oscar and Vera have escaped, that Rowan probably helped them, but that concern is secondary now. Logan is in danger.
Matt appeared out of nowhere, his breath ragged, his eyes filled with despair. He barely had time to explain before Kurt and I were on our way, leaving the pursuit of Oscar for later. Our big brother was our priority.
"This can't be happening," I think as we keep running. The thought of Logan being injured or worse, captured by our enemies or whatever he might have encountered, makes us quicken our pace. We can't afford to lose any more time.
"We must be close!" Kurt says, but there's nothing there, just a part of the forest so dark it looks like night has fallen. This isn't normal. Something is happening here, and our brother has found it.
"Alpha, over there!" Lionel yells. This time, Liam stayed behind to protect our mates. So much was happening, and even though we were triplets, and they were twins, it felt like we weren't enough. How was that possible? To be honest, I didn't understand.
Halfway through, between the trees and the whisper of the wind, we see them. A small group of warriors struggling forward, and in the middle of them, held up by two of our men, is Logan. My heart stops for a second as I see him: bloodied, his clothes torn, his face pale. Jesus Christ!
"Logan!" I shout, running towards them as Kurt does the same.
The warriors pause, allowing us to approach. Logan looks up, frantic. Everything suggests that they have rushed from wherever they were; in the distance, growls make my skin crawl. What the fuck they were dealing with?
"What happened? Tell me!" I demand.
"Alpha, we encountered a formidable enemy, a huge beast, several of them... worse than anything we've seen before," one of the warriors says as my brother tries to speak. Damn he looks like shit.
"I'm fine... or at least I will be," he says, his voice hoarse but steady.
My eyes scan his body, looking for any serious injuries. He has deep cuts and bruises; the worst is a terrible wound on his back and another on his neck. Exhaustion and pain are clearly written on his face. My brother is fierce; we always count on him to finish the fight. The other warriors are also injured, and I immediately signal to Lionel to call for help. My brother needs medical attention.
"What the hell? Damn Logan! What is going on?" Kurt asks, his tone softer than I expected. One of the warriors comes forward.
"He faced the beast alone," he explains. "He fought with incredible bravery, but the creature was too big and completely out of control. We barely managed to get him out before the thing finished him off."
Logan coughs a little, wiping the blood from the corner of his mouth. Coughing up blood is never a good sign.
"I had no choice," he says weakly but firmly. "I needed answers, and we found evidence, important information. I couldn't wait... not with what's at stake." Kurt and I exchange glances. We know Logan has always been impulsive, but this went beyond that. Risking so much...
"Why, Logan?" I finally ask. "Why risk yourself like this? You knew you could've called us. We could have come with you." Logan looks at us, his dark eyes shining with an intensity that can't be ignored.
"They want her..." he says.
His answer takes me by surprise, and I can see it does the same for Kurt. We knew he cared for her; he had confessed to us that he felt the mate bond. But there was something more behind those words, something we didn't fully understand. Logan bites his lip, clearly struggling to stay clear.
"I found evidence... before that awful beast attacked me. Papers, torn documents, but enough to know the names of those behind this. And what they plan to do... not just to Maddie, but to everyone who is human on our lands. They want to use these creatures to subjugate people..." he says, and I saw a bag with some documents. Goddess...
"For what?" Kurt asks. But Logan is coughing up more blood, and I don't think it's a good idea for him to keep talking.
"You should have escaped as soon as possible," I tell him.
"I know, but... I couldn't risk anyone else getting hurt. I didn't know what I would find. And now I do. We have to present this evidence before it's too late. We know that although the danger is still there, we now have a clearer idea of what we're up against. Our Uncle Oscar will still be a problem, but first... we have to protect our own. And Maddie is at the top of that list.
"What proof of what? She is in the top of the list of what?" I ask in a whisper.
"The Council... the humans..." Logan muttered, and then he fainted.
"Logan! Logan!"
"For heaven's sake!" Kurt shouts and we go into a frenzy. We have to get back, knowing that the battle has only just begun.
"Kurt, go with them. Help is coming, I already sent a message to doctor Karim, she will wait for you. Go! Go!" I command him, and my brother obeys, while I fear that Logan could die at any moment.
"Lionel, let's go carefully to where they came from," I say to our beta.
"He can show you where, Alpha," says one of the less injured warriors. We follow him, following the trail of blood and destruction, and find more of our warriors wounded ahead of us.
"We need more help!" Lionel shouts through our mindlink, and as we enter a cave I think we're on the wrong path, but we're not. The forest stretches out beyond it, and I'm horrified to see smoke and hear explosions.
"Damn it!" I yell as I run inside, my friend calling after me.
"This has to be the place Logan mentioned. There must be evidence! We have to get as much as we can, the Council can't win!"
"What the hell is this?" I wonder, taking in the chaos as a loud crash echoes around me. I felt trap, something is happening.
"Alpha, look out!"
