Chapter 129: Intercepted messages
Kurt
"An incursion at the border?"
"That's right, Alpha. But they didn’t take anything. We were just bringing back some goods from the human town—a small trade—when we were interrupted. From what we can tell, nothing is missing," one of the warriors explains during our daily meeting. These meetings seem to grow longer each time.
"It’s probably nothing, and we have more pressing matters to attend to," says Logan, motioning to Dr. Karim, who starts to speak.
"I'm sorry to say that the findings from analyzing that large beast’s body are concerning. Whoever is behind this is playing with fire and has no good intentions," the doctor points out, starting a small presentation on certain medical topics. What I understand is that this is not natural, and it’s absolutely twisted.
"Do you mean those were once werewolves?" I ask.
"That’s right. To be exact, they were rogues. Their DNA has been altered and mutated. I’d dare say there must be a long list of experiments that led to this."
"This is insane. Are you sure, Doctor?" a warrior seems in shock.
"I personally conducted several of the tests and oversaw others," she responds confidently. One of the trusted warriors, who is also her mate, stands beside her, offering his full support, as he should.
"Who could’ve done this?"
"Someone or a pack with the resources to do so. This is expensive; it requires a large facility and a significant medical team."
"This all screams Council to me. And if it’s not them, they’re covering for someone," Dominic remarked, and as always, he seemed to be right. I hadn’t even considered it. These guys were bad, but now they were worse.
All the information we had was racing through my mind: Maddie had said they wanted to finish us off. Logan had overheard them, clearly plotting with our uncle. There was something about a lineage, and the humans… they wanted the humans. Especially the women. They hated humans, but they wanted them under their control. This has no sense!
To top it off, there was the matter of the beasts and the territory we had forced them to vacate years ago. The idea that we had driven out our own mate breaks my heart.
"For what purpose? They couldn’t stand in our way. Maddie will soon be proclaimed Luna; the humans will be under our protection. From many angles, they’ve already lost," I asked.
"Maybe the packs are slipping out of their control. They want to terrify us all. They started testing with our mate, although the Night Wolves must be involved too," he replied. I kept thinking: all of this is terrifying. Would the packs’ behavior change?
"They’re looking for ways to attack and defend themselves. They’re not playing by the rules," Logan sighed.
"And how can we fight this?" asked Matt, one of the warriors and Dr. Karim's mate.
"I think we have a lead. The message we intercepted from my uncle contains one word we managed to decode. It’s a location stretching through here," Logan explained, pointing to an area of the forest that extends beyond the river, ending at the Black Forest.
"It’s no coincidence, right? The old alpha is involved in this," Karim said, pinching the bridge of his nose with his fingers.
"Unfortunately, we believe that’s the case. This area has been scarcely explored," Logan explained.
"Can we get more information from the old man?" I asked.
"We’ve done what we can. After we intercepted his message, he’s become more secretive. We’re going to resort to more… stimulating methods for his cooperation, you could say, but in the meantime, we need to assemble a small team to advance into that region. It’s bound to be dangerous, but we have no other option," Dominic said. Damn, our uncle was complicating things, and I agreed we needed to prevent this. The old man has done enough damage.
"The twins would be ideal, but they’re on vacation," I admitted, and automatically, Logan raised his hand.
"I can go. I’d like to be involved in the field investigation and analyze everything myself," he said firmly.
I thought it wasn’t entirely a good idea. There are still things to resolve with our mate, and we need the three of us together. He had just returned from exploring human territory, and before that, I had barely seen him, as he was meeting with some warriors and tracking our uncle. It’s as if Logan doesn’t want to be here, like he prefers being busy elsewhere, when the most important thing is right here, in the pack! But Dominic intervened quickly.
"It’s an excellent idea, brother," he says.
"We’ll accompany him, Alpha," Matt says firmly. We had people on our side, thanks to the goddess. And we quickly moved on to another topic before I could say anything more.
"Now, we need to follow up on who Alpha Oscar was communicating with," Logan pointed out, and we all fell silent. No one likes knowing there are traitors among us.
"We need to track Irina, follow who she was meeting with in the pack, who she was talking to. She was our mole, and I think she was working with someone else besides Oscar," Dominic explained, and Logan lowered his head in shame. And to think he slept with her!
"We’ll handle it, Alphas," a warrior said.
"Great, now… move our uncle to the dungeon, along with Vera. We have to assume they’re in this together. We need answers. Understanding their connection to the Night Wolves and what they can gain from us is vital," I indicated.
I haven’t gone to see my uncle because, honestly, I don’t care. For me, he died the moment he went against our mate, when he agreed to that insane ritual and locked us up like common prisoners. I know our aunt has been hiding, but I never imagined that old Oscar would have the audacity to try and go against us. But ambition knows no bounds, as past events have shown… and unfortunately, future events would prove it again.
"Very well, let the expedition leave as soon as possible. We have a lot to do. Logan to the forest, I’ll send a team to investigate Irina inside and outside the pack. We’ll handle Oscar here," Dom directed, and my wolf rejoiced.
"He’ll talk, even if it’s the last thing he does. He’ll see what we went through locked up. We’ll give him a taste of his own medicine," Ajax whispered with malice.
