Chapter 53: The Trial

Kurt

"Are you comfortable? Do you need anything?"
"The doctor says I need to rest," Maddie mentions. With everything that's happening, being here with her is all that matters.

"If she had been marked and mated with us, she would have healed faster," my wolf growls as we look again at the wounds on her face and arms. It was true that she had healed faster than any other human, but she still looked bruised and in pain, unable to move well. The thought broke my heart.

"I'm not leaving, Kurt," she mumbled, while I didn't move from my seat. We had never left her alone, out of caution for what might happen, and because we couldn't bear to be away from her. We had experienced what it was like not to have her around, and it had been extremely painful.

"I know, because you can't move, not because you don't want to..." I reply, and she sighs.

"I have to admit I'm still not convinced by all this and I'm still scared."

"Mate, we wouldn't hurt you, at least not Dom and me, and as for Logan, we'll take care of him," I answer, holding her hand on the stretcher. Even if she gets better, I will never forgive myself for what happened in front of our eyes. To see her suffer was something I could never accept.
"I've been through too much. Humans, we have suffered too much, but even I'm aware that something more powerful than I thought is happening between us. And while I'm not sure if I can accept it so easily, I also know that my world has changed… and I can't go back to my human life as if nothing had happened," she says sadly.

We were too naive to think that she would just leave her life as we forced her to. I suppose she had to go through a grieving process, realizing that she wouldn't come back to accept the new, to accept us.

"I promise there will be improvements, and you will decide in the end," I said, leaving the choice in her hands, as it always should have been. When she went back to sleep, the doctor spoke to Dom and me. We had to go, but it was urgent.

"She needs all three of you to get better, and what's happening in the pack is really serious, but keep that in mind for the decisions to come. The fact that if she becomes part of the pack, she will have the protection of all, and your blood will give her a chance to get better," Doctor Karim explained.

"You're right, Doctor," my brother said.

"She is suffering. I have her on very strong medication...she shouldn't have to go through this," the doctor said sympathetically, and I knew she had begun to care for her in the short time they had been together.

Our mate had been strong and brave, even when she had done something that no other wolf would forgive. She had risked herself for her friend and faced several wolves who had left her alive, but I knew she had fought bravely.

"She was truly exceptional," I sighed, and my brother agreed.

"Come on, we have to go," he told me, and I knew we were in for something big.

Trials in the packs were not common because we had a very specific moral code, especially with our own members, whom we considered our own family. But the few times it happened, the Alpha and Luna were present, as well as representatives of the Council, who made sure that the laws of the wolves were followed fairly.

In our uncle's office were he, his wife and a group of five older men with solemn appearances, and of course Logan. Just seeing him made my blood boil.

"Alphas, we have been waiting for you," one of the council members said.
"This is a waste of time," Logan said, and my wolf growled. I kept looking at his bloodshot eye, and I felt like matching it and hitting the other eye as well.
"Silence, Alpha. This is unusual enough, so let's proceed as quickly as possible," the councilman said, silencing Logan while another man began to speak.
"We have been called here to conduct a trial against Logan, the future Alpha of Moonvalley, who is accused of harming his own mate and attacking his own pack. He is accused by his own brothers."
"Lies! She's not our mate, we haven't accepted her, and I would never harm my own pack," Logan shouted as our uncle tried to restore order.
"Do you have proof of that, Alpha?"
"I only wanted to control the human. All wolves know that Luna is the most important link in our chain. If we accept the human as a Luna, we would be the weakest pack in the region. I only wanted to protect us and our pack," he shouted, and my brother and I had to hold back. Frankly, I was sure we would win this one.
"Gentlemen, do you have anything to say?" the councilor asked us.
"We are triplets, and Kurt and I have every intention of accepting our mate chosen by the Moon Goddess, with only Logan opposing us. Furthermore, we have evidence that he conspired to have our mate kidnapped and her life put in grave danger."
"Are you accusing him of working with other packs to harm his own?" my uncle asked, horrified.
"I would never work with the enemy!" Logan shouted.
"Gentlemen, I remind you that we have no proof that the Night Wolves are connected to the kidnapping; we only have the word of two humans," the councilman said, and I growled.
"I assume the evidence my brother has comes from those same two humans," Logan said with a smile.
"Actually, no. We have a wolf who claims to have followed your orders," I said, and the door opened and Arthur entered.
"Damn wolf!" Logan hissed. It was obvious that he knew what was coming.
"Speak, boy. Tell the truth," our uncle urged.
"I was helping our Alpha, Logan. He had a special request."
"What request?" our uncle asked.
"He wanted me to help get the human out. It was just to keep her safe somewhere else. He was afraid of what might happen," the warrior said, and I couldn't believe it. He was distorting the situation.
"Lies! He threatened her and wanted to get her out," I shouted.
"Enough, Alpha," the councilman said.
"Alpha Logan had nothing to do with the kidnapping and has no ties to other packs. He only wants to help Moonvalley. He's gathering information to make us stronger," the warrior said. It was obvious that our brother had brainwashed him.
"Our mate claims he threatened her and wanted to destroy us!" Dominic said.
"I'm sorry, Alphas. The word of a human who is not part of the pack has no value here," the councilman said. I couldn't believe it.
"I think we have a verdict," our uncle said. I don't like this, I don't like this.
“Wait!” I yell.
