Chapter 14: A hasty decision

Logan

"I told you that our mate would make us lose our minds and bring misfortune upon us! And none of them listened!”

And here we were, having made a terribly rash decision, and now we were paying the consequences. More than two dozen wolves had come after us. I run like a mad, while I led some of the warriors away, dividing our opponents to weaken them.

We loved to fight and show that we were the strongest, but I still didn't have our official Alpha title, and these wolves were fighting for their lives.

"Where did so many wolves come from and what are they doing in human territory?" Dominic shouted through the mindlink as I heard him scream from the effort of fighting so many wolves at once.

"And they're not just any wolves, they're warriors. Some of them don't even seem to be Night Wolves, what the hell?" Kurt shouted.

Unfortunately, I had to agree with them that this was not normal at all. It was as if they were on guard, they came prepared, and I feared they had more weapons hidden.

The answer for me was that something important was happening here, because why would they have so many warriors if they were only dealing with humans?

Their weapons didn't do much damage to us, and a single wolf could defeat even the strongest human team. Something's wrong here, I thought.

I took the wolves one by one, dragged them, threw them against the trees, and beat them until they were knocked out and killed. I knew my brothers were doing the same thing.

The fights between the wolves were truly violent, and although our pack always sought peace, I had to admit that we were driven by hatred and revenge.

The arrival of our mate had really upset us, and we couldn't think clearly.

"They'll get what they deserve," my wolf Morgan roared.

I bite and kill, and my wolf felt a bloodlust like never before. As I tore out the last enemy's throat with my fangs, I heard my brother's scream and ran frantically to his side.

We had many differences and many problems at the moment because of our mate, but I would do anything for my brothers. I reached a clearing in the forest, and Dominic's fight with the wolves had been fierce; there was blood and wolf parts everywhere.

He wasn't the most violent wolf, he had always been the more rational brother, but it seemed that all this was bringing out the worst in him, and he wasn't afraid to show it.

"I don't know where Kurt is," he said to me, worried with an injured arm.

"Something tells me he came back after Walter," I told him, and he nodded. We changed back into our wolf forms and he followed me.

Now the humans were shooting at us in terror, and I ran over them, trying not to hurt them, but it was quite difficult since my wolf was used to fighting the strongest of our species.

"Tell me, why did you take her?" I heard Kurt's voice in the distance.

"Kurt!"

"We had orders..." Walter's say spitting blood.

"Deny that you hit her and touched her," my brother insisted as he hit a wolf who must be Walter.

The situation didn't look good, because now the others would know that we had a mate. Our enemies could find out that we now had a weakness, a great weakness, since our mate was a human.

"Kurt! Stop! Stop!" I yelled at him.

"That human bitch! She hit me!" Walter had the nerve to say, and Kurt was now completely out of control, smashing Walter's head.

"You bastard, you'll never touch her again!" he shouted as he continued to hit his head until the man stopped breathing.

In the distance, I heard footsteps of approaching wolves, and also human footsteps. There were too many and it was already too much against us.

"Let's go, Kurt!" Dominic pulled him away.

I must admit, I was relieved that Walter had suffered enough and was dead. Neither he nor anyone else should have touched her, beaten her or mistreated her. My wolf agreed with me.

"Run!" I shouted to my brothers as the footsteps came closer.

We dragged Kurt, who wanted to keep fighting, while Dominic finished off the wolves who had witnessed everything.

"They can't find out about her," he explained, and it seemed too late as they were on our heels. I was afraid that some may escape. We are losing control.

"The Three Dragons! After them!" I hear screams.

“Run!” I yell.

I felt shots hit my legs and fur; the humans' bullets seemed to have changed. We were really in danger.

"They have wolfsbane!" Dominic shouted.

If there was one poison that was deadly to us, it was that, and for a moment, fear coursed through my entire body.

"Come back, you bastards!" I heard a cry and knew who it was from.

"Gerard..." Dominic sighed.

"That bastard..." Kurt seemed to want to turn around to attack him.

It was our enemy, running after us. He knew we had seen something we shouldn't have, and he wanted revenge, too. Whatever his operation was, we had destroyed it.

"Kill them!" he screams.

He was still in his human form, I saw his brown hair and blue eyes. There was something familiar about him, we had known each other for years... but something about him disturbed me.

I had this bad feeling growing inside of me that surpassed all of this shit.

"Watch out!" Dominic shouted, and we fell to the ground, when I hear the shots.

"Automatic guns!" I yell.

But I saw something shiny flying through the air and heard an agonizing sound as I saw my younger brother wounded in his chest, lying on the ground with blood everywhere.

"No! No!" I cried in despair.

"Pick him up! Get him out of here!" I yelled to Dominic, and he carried Kurt while I went back and attacked the men who were shooting. I didn't care if they were wolves or humans, I tore through them all.

They shot me and my whole body burned but I continued.

"After them!" Gerard yelled, but my brothers already had the advantage. I lost myself in the forest, making him follow my trail and not theirs.

It was night when I crossed the river, still running. And in that desperate moment, I thought of my brothers and also of her.

Hell, ever since I saw her again, all I could think about was her.

Maddie.

That damn human.
