Chapter 108: A Luna, a beta and a little wolf

Maddie

I'm already beginning to believe that there's some truth to all of this - the ritual, the way the little wolf is helping me, as if we were connected. Just a few hours ago, the possibility, the very idea of escaping, seemed impossible. And now we're running through the secret corridors of an ancient temple, a place we've never heard of in our lives. We're free... at least for the moment, with my little friend leading the way.

We start to climb, gasping for air and looking back, but it doesn't seem like anyone is following us. Maybe these wolves don't know about these secret corridors, or maybe they're not going where we're going, where little wolf is leading us.

"Wait!" I shout in fear as a man suddenly appears in front of us, seemingly out of nowhere. It looks at us with a surprised expression.

"It's true! You've escaped!" the man cries, but he doesn't have a chance to react because little wolf is already on him, attacking him with ferocity. He may be small, but his sharp teeth go for the man's throat in an instant. My friend pulls me along so we can keep running as soon as the wolf finishes the man.

"We have to get out of here, we have to get out of here," she repeats as we continue to move up . We feel a tremor, as if the very foundation of the temple is shaking, and we have to hold on to the walls. I fall to the ground and pull myself up as best I can, dizzy from the impact, the stress, and now this.

"What the hell is happening?" I whisper as the wolf howls nearby, signaling me to keep going. He has the same purpose and urgency as we do. I wonder what's going on in this temple and if it's really as old as it seems. Will it hold out long enough for us to get out?

The little I know about the wolves is that they are very superstitious and believe strongly in their goddes. The Night Wolves, on the other hand, seem to be the complete opposite, concerned only with their own well-being and achieving their goals. Humans don't fit into their beliefs, so we are nothing at their eyes.

I think I need to know more about all this. If destiny really marks me as Luna, I need to understand it better. I need to know if I can believe in it.

"Damn it! This place is moving like we're on a ship," I hear Robin say behind me as the shaking gets stronger. We keep moving forward and come to a cliff. We jump over it and land in a stream that trickles through a crack without stopping. The place is huge, even the corridors are wide. The temple is roaring, and inside we hear chaos as we run outside.

We don't have the time or luxury to rest or look around. Just as we're about to crawl, another tremor shakes the ground, and we're thrown back down.

"For heaven's sake!" I exclaim, dazed. I lose sight of the little wolf, but I can still hear him howling. As I take more steps, I realize we're really close.

"Oh, I can't believe it, we are out..." Robin murmurs as we finally make it outside, right into the forest.

I don't know if it's the same forest I was in before or a different one. I have no idea how long we've been trapped, but to feel the air on our faces and know that we're free from this hell is a wonderful feeling. It seems to be dawn, the air is cold, and we have made it out against all odds.

"Thank you, my friend, thank you! You've been amazing. You've fought like a true warrior and saved our lives several times. Now you're free again," I say, hugging the wolf and stroking his fur. He looks satisfied and luckily he's not hurt. Deep down, I hope he wants to come with me. I feel connected to him, I need him somehow.

But of course, not everything will be that simple. If I've learned anything in this world of wolves, it's that everything is complicated. I still feel like I'm in that cursed ritual, and when we hear voices, both wolves and men running nearby, we panic again. We've escaped, and now they're outside, looking for us.

"We have to hide until we find out where we are," I insist, and we start moving again. We run through the forest, hearing footsteps and shouts behind us, and the wolf is still with us.

"Those bitches!"

"Get them!"

"How the hell did they get away?" our enemies yell.

No, we can't fall into their hands again, not after all the trouble we went through to escape! That's the only thought running through my head. Suddenly, a loud thud makes me realize that Robin has fallen. I turn to see a man dragging her away.

"No!" I yell, and the little wolf immediately attacks the man. Meanwhile, I grab the bar again and start beating him. I regret that I lost my backpack with my things, I miss my knife, but the bar had proven to be incredibly useful. I keep hitting the man until he's knocked out. As more men appear, I start throwing stones and anything I can find to stop them, while Robin does the same.

"There are no more," I whisper, these men are dead, but none is coming.

"They're all going to the other side," Robin tells me, and we hear distant howls and screams as the ground continues to shake.

"Liam," she says worriedly. I think she's going to suggest we go back and help him, but instead she smiles with pride. "It's him. He must have helped us."

"Let's go, we have to reach the town, tell them what's happening, find my mates" I insist, but a violent force throws us to the ground. I look in horror at a pair of those terrifying beasts, they are huge, hungry. This is impossible, I can't believe our bad luck.

"What the hell is that?" Robin screams in terror. I know there are no rocks or bars that will work against these creatures. Just when I think all is lost, we hear a scream. It sounds like a war cry, desperate, and I know we're not alone.
