Chapter 24: In the lion's den
Maddie
I knew I was walking into the lion's den, but I had no choice. I had thought a lot about my family, and if something had happened to them, I had to know and try to help them.
Besides, if I could see my brother for a moment, maybe I could tell him about my plan to escape and he could help me.
I had thought about it many times, and even though I hadn't talked to Robin yet, I knew that we could escape on our own. But escaping from the wolves would not be easy.
They would hunt us to the ends of the earth, their excellent sense of smell and their alliances with other powerful packs would be our end.
I had expected the Three Dragons to feel sorry for me, but that hadn't been the case.
"What do you want me to do?" I ask Logan as he continues to study my face. He strokes my hair and his hand goes down my arm.
I am scared; of all the things I have to do in my plans, I never imagined that I would have to beg one of the triplets, and on top of that, the worst of all.
I had to admit that Kurt had been kind and considerate, at least in the last few hours.
Dominic seemed concerned about the situation, and I noticed that he at least cared about what I wanted. But Logan was a different story.
He took a few steps back and kept looking at me as if he wanted to see me from another angle, and I trembled with fear.
"Let's see what a little human can do for a big Alpha..." he said arrogantly and came closer to me again.
He just sniffed me and looked at me closely. When he saw that I expected the worst from him, he suddenly laughed.
"Do you think I want to hurt you or fuck you? Why would an Alpha like me want to have anything to do with you?" he said sarcastically and sat back down on the bed.
"You are so sure that you have us in your hands, aren't you? You think I desire you. You're very wrong, human," he says.
I don't know if I should be happy or offended. Even though I don't think I like having a man around who sees me as so inferior, the hatred in his eyes was palpable.
Although there was something about him... the way he had cornered me in that hallway and rubbed up against me. What did that mean?
"What I want has nothing to do with sex... I want you to convince my brothers that you'll give them a chance, and it has to be very clear so that they fall for it like fools..."
"But why? I thought they wouldn't accept me."
"And they won't. You'll break their little hearts," he says, smiling.
"How??"
I didn't like the fact that some Alphas would hate me and go against me, violent and vengeful wolves, wanting to lash out at me for hurting their feelings.
"The whole point is to present you as our mate in a ceremony in the coming days. You'll pretend to accept them, and when the day comes, you'll disappear."
"Will you let me go then?" I ask excitedly. Logan laughs again.
"No... I'm going to keep you locked up so you won't make it to the ceremony. And then you'll confess to them that you don't love them and that this was all a trick," he says.
I'm surprised how he planned all this, or maybe he just took advantage of the opportunity I just gave him.
“You can turn them away, you can reject the Three Dragons. I know what they're like. You're right, you have to be afraid of them and be very careful. You'll be safer away from them," the voice in the infirmary had told me.
Someone who wanted to help me. Could be true? That I had someone here, an ally?
"Deal... but you will let me talk to my family and I´ll see them. And you will promise never to harm this town. Or let other wolves mess with them."
"There is a treaty, human, not to interfere with humans..."
"Well, it doesn't seem to be working," I say firmly, he growls.
If I was going to do this, I had to make the best of it.
"All right, I'll give orders that no one touches the city," he says, holding out his hand.
"What will happen to me after the ceremony?"
"Does it matter? You'll be alive, if that's what you're worried about. And your family will be fine, isn't that what you want?" he says, and I nod sadly.
I give him my hand, and he holds it for a long time, caressing the back of my hand with his fingers. For a second I see some humanity in his eyes, as if he doesn't like what he's doing, but he has no other choice.
"Are you sure about this, Logan? What our uncle said..." I hear Kurt say in surprise as we walk towards one of the cars.
When Logan appeared in front of his brothers and told them that he agreed to go to the town, the others almost fell back, but they took it as good news, as if Logan had come to his senses.
Nothing could have been further from the truth.
The twins almost jumped for joy and ran to get Robin. I'm doing this for her, too.
"To what do we owe this change, brother?" Dominic asked curiously. I was afraid the others would suspect now, so I took the opportunity to speak.
"I talked to him and told him my situation... I also promised to give this a chance between all of us," I say. Logan gives me a sideways glance and then smiles.
It's not exactly the truth, but it's not a lie either. I knew Logan had a hidden agenda; and I don't know why he wanted to destroy his brothers. But in the end, I had a plan of my own. And I had to see my family.
"You really are amazing," Dominic said, looking at me with pride, and my heart leapt. Kurt was already making all the arrangements for us to leave.
"Of course, I haven't accepted her yet, nor will I. But I recognize that she's worried about her family. There will only be a few of us, the twins and the humans... no one can know about this," Logan assured.
"I can stay, so our uncle won't suspect anything," Dominic says. It seemed like he wanted to come with us, but he was being smart.
"I can stay too," said one of the twins, and so we decided.
In the car, I held Robin's hand in anguish; without words, we looked at each other and said this was the moment. We couldn't run now because we might endanger our family, but we sure that they are all right.
As soon as I saw the road leading to the town and the police and firemen, I knew something had happened.
"Everything's going to be okay...everything's going to be okay," Robin whispered to me.
And I saw them.
