Chapter 29: Surveillance
Dominic
"Yes, Uncle, our mate definitely accepts us. Even Logan seems to be interested in her."
"That's good. So, can you confirm that she'll be at the ceremony?" he asks me while we are in his office and I remain silent.
"I see... things aren't going so well. Did you know that the Golden Boys will be presenting their human mate? And don't get me wrong, they're fantastic, but they're betas, nephew. And you are three alphas... and couldn't convince a human" he points out.
"Alphas are more complicated and..."
"Do you know why? Do you know why they succeeded where you failed? Because they are united, brothers who don't act independently or selfishly, they think of the common good, and that translates very well to the common good of the pack," he says, and I feel ashamed.
How could I explain that our past with her tormented us? That we had hurt her and that she hated us for good reason. Maddie was imprisoned here against her will, and if she wanted to get close to us, it was because she was better than us in every way.
"I don't care what you have to do, boy. If this girl is not presented at the ceremony and there is no promise of marking and mating... the consequences for the pack will be devastating," he says.
"Uncle, but..."
"Do you not understand how others might perceive this as weakness? If three alphas can't control a human mate... How are you going to rule these territories? How will you protect your people?" he says, and I feel even more embarrassed. So much so that I almost forget what I came for.
"Speaking of which, Uncle, I would like your permission to investigate other packs. I think if we go to the council..."
"Which packs? And please don't tell me the Night Wolves."
"Uncle, I have disturbing news..." I say, but he is already holding his head in his hands.
"How do I tell you, boy? Tell me! We're in enough trouble already!"
"But what we found out..." I insisted.
"There's nothing you can tell me that would make me ask the Council for permission to deal with these wolves!"
"Not even that they've been talking to rogues to infiltrate not only human towns, but right here in Moonvalley?" I say, and he doesn't even look shocked.
"You knew?" he asks me to sit down.
"I'm going to tell you the truth, Dominic, and I hope you're wise enough to know what to do with this information. And by that I mean that you should be able to keep your mouth shut and follow your Alpha's orders," he says, and I swallow hard.
"The Council is aware that the Night Wolves are going against the packs and breaking the agreements. But we have no proof, and we can't just go to other councils or packs and say we saw it or heard it. We need real evidence, and the Council, which is better prepared than us, is very close to getting it. But if you go to them and screw up..."
"...everything falls apart," I finish.
"That's right. Do you understand?" I nod.
The truth was that many things were beyond my knowledge and control, no matter how much I wanted to get involved.
"And how much control does the Council have? Why haven't they interfered with the kidnapped humans? We need to prevent more girls from being abducted; we don't know what these wolves are up to."
"The packs are in crisis, boy, you know that. There are fewer and fewer she-wolves, and the Council fears a revolt."
"So they give every woman... they don't care about humans!" I say angrily.
"You didn't care either! Not until a human came along who had you completely dazed and trapped," he says, and I growl.
"You know what I'm saying is true..." he replies.
"Please answer my question," I insist.
"There is surveillance, but with caution. They told me there is an infiltrator within the Night Wolves who will give us the master stroke," he says, and I don't know what to think.
I had gone to see my uncle as soon as one of our warriors brought me the news, but I found another surprise there.
"We need to talk," I said to Kurt, who seemed flushed and upset.
"You interrupted my date..." he said angrily.
"Sorry, I can see it went pretty well," I say, noticing how his eyes are shining and that he is undoubtedly aroused. I admit and jealous.
"Talk before I hit you." he replies, buttoning his shirt.
"I watched the Night Wolves from a distance..."
"Have you told our uncle?"
"He doesn't want to help us. He said we shouldn't approach them because we might jeopardize a Council operation."
"I don't believe that." Kurt snorts.
"Neither do I, but the problem isn't that, the problem is that... I saw Logan talking to some Night Wolves."
"Logan?" he asks in shock.
"I don't know what he was planning, I couldn't hear him. It was brief, but it's obvious he knew them and had some kind of relationship."
"A deal, you think?"
"Could be. I don't know what to think. Our uncle said it's possible there's an infiltrator in the Night Wolves."
"I don't see Logan in that role," he answers.
"It's dangerous, brother. I think they're moving forward taken humans without scruples, and there's no one to stop them. And if the Council is investigating them, they're giving them too much leeway."
"I see... what do you suggest?"
"I want to go after that wolf Logan was talking to. He was bald and huge, I think it will be easy to find him. Of course, if we ask Logan, he'll deny everything."
"Let's go tomorrow, I'll go with you." he adds.
"But we'll leave mate alone. Maybe she can be with Logan... anyway, I'm sure he won't want to be with her and will find some excuse."
"Okay, I'll tell the Golden Boys to keep an eye on her," and we agree.
"Right now, I have a head start. Maybe I'll be with my mate the day after tomorrow at this time, and I bet I'll make a lot more progress than you."
"I doubt that, brother," he says with a smile.
I never thought I'd be sharing so much with him, but if there was one thing I was sure of, it was that I could count on Kurt.
If we wanted her to be safe and forgive us, we had to do everything possible. She would never pardon us if she knew that we had done nothing for the humans.
We had to make her accept us, no matter what the cost.
