Chapter 131: The Stubborn Brother
Kurt
Everything is in motion, but I can't shake the uneasiness I have with Logan. When we leave, I want to talk to him, I want to make him change his mind. I want to tell him that he has to stay, that he shouldn't leave, that our mate needs his presence, even if we don't know what the future holds. Only by being near her can he make any progress.
I try to get closer, but he pulls away, so I go after him.
"Logan!" I finally catch up to him, but he's upset; it's obvious he doesn't want to talk to me.
"Kurt, I don't have time, and..."
"You didn't have time to see us when they had us locked up and drugged, so I guess a few minutes won't make any difference to you, but it will to me," I say, and he sighs and goes quiet, knowing I'm right. "I don't know if I've forgiven you, and I have to say that I'm not happy being around you, even though I recognize your strengths and the power you have. What matters is the power of the Three Dragons, and that power is nothing compared to what we could have together with our mate. And I don't know if I want you with her, nor do I know if she wants you, but the only way to find out is to be here, at least near her. Our power will be amplified when the three of us are together."
"Kurt, it's not that easy..."
"But we'll only find out if you stay here and face it, if you're here."
"I am here," he says stubbornly, but I already knew him. He's the kind of man who finds it hard to admit that others are right, always finding excuses, so many reasons, but maybe he'll finally realize that I'm right.
"You've found every excuse to leave, to stay far away, and even though we have to find out about this horrible beast, believe me, it's necessary to stop it. I've faced it and it's terrifying... You have to be there," I urge him, and he sighs.
"What I did was hard to forgive, even for me. It haunts me all the time. I don't know if I'll ever get over it or if, as you say, she'll accept me. But there are other things that are important."
"Nothing is more important than our mate, than the strength we can have together... all four of us,"
"I'm sorry Kurt, not everyone can be like you. There are things I have to do," he says and walks away from me.
"Be like me? What the heck?" I yell, and wWhen I'm about to call him again, Dominic intervenes.
"Let him be. Give him time..."
"Time? We need him here! And even though he's working, even more than we are, he runs away like a coward," I answer, but my brother sighs.
"We all need different things and he needs to be away for a while. But I'm sure he'll come back. Mate is fierce, and the bond is extraordinary. After being together, the three of us have become stronger; you've noticed it, and so have the others. Maybe our older brother has also noticed it and knows what's happening. Right now, he's fighting inside between wanting to stay and not being able to."
"It's too complicated. It would be so easy to just accept her..."
"We didn't accept them from the beginning, and that was a big mistake. We were just smart enough to embrace the bond over time and accept it. You were the first to accepted her, to care for her. And that... is a superpower" he admits.
"I don't like this"
"He's going to accept his feelings, sooner or later. And let's face it, neither of us can leave because Maddie would miss us, and we need to be near her to strengthen the bond even more. We don't know what could happen if she doesn't accept Logan. It's a critical, unstable situation"
"You trust him too much," I huff, and Dominic laughs. You'd think that as second in command he'd be content to take power from our older brother, or even want to seize it, but that wasn't the case. Dominic was really smart and thought about what was best for everyone and supported us. I knew that if I had the same problem, he'd support me.
"When I told you about my plan to play along with Irina, you thought it was crazy, but in the end reason and Logan came back. I told you to trust him. You'll see," he says, and I remain pensive.
"He's our only chance to mark our mate. We'll do whatever we have to," my wolf whispers in my head.
"We'll do what we have to. Our uncle will talk, and Logan will bring good news. You'll see. I even have a lead on Irina..." he says and shows me a recently opened letter. Damn, our warriors move fast.
"Really?" this is good. Really good.
"Yeah, someone saw her in a couple of bars, apparently lying, saying she's still with us, that she's Logan's mate." That bitch!
"Nothing but lies," I growl. That woman was crazy; I can't believe my older brother would fall so low with her. I can't wait until we have the ceremony with Maddie and all her lies come crashing down like a house of cards.
"We could track her down. What do you think? You and me, hunting down that bad woman," Dom says through clenched teeth. He still hasn't talked to Maddie about what happened between him and Irina. I don't think it's wise, but my brother is extremely honest, a good man.
To be with a woman other than my mate... I can't even imagine it. I'd feel like I was dying, the horror and guilt would consume me. Dominic must have suffered, must still be suffering. He didn't deserve it.
"I think it's time for revenge," I answer with a smile.
