Chapter 137: Oscar and Vera
Kurt
The sound of the blow echoes through the room, a muffled echo bouncing off the stone walls. Mafia spits blood on the floor but doesn't even raise his head. He knows another blow is coming, and he's not wrong. My knuckles slam into his jaw again, sending his head lolling to the side.
"You're going to talk," my voice is low, almost a growl. "Or, I swear, what comes next will be much worse."
The werewolf shudders, but says nothing. His silence burns inside me, and with every second that passes without an answer, the anger in my chest grows. My brother had been partially wrong, and I'd thought that would give me some satisfaction, but the reality was that it wasn't just about revenge anymore, or how it would feel to hit that bastard. And believe me, I loved beating him. But there was more, everything had changed.
I think of Maddie. Of what she had suffered in the Black Forest during the ritual. How they attacked her. The danger they put her in. Those bastards knew. They planned it. It had to be this way. My uncle was involved, and I had spent the morning torturing him: I beat him, I choked him for a while. It cost me more than I thought - it was hard. This man had been like a father to us, but a mate was above everything.
"What are you planning?" I roar, stepping closer to Mafia, grabbing a handful of his hair and lifting his face. I look him straight in the eye, my fangs threatening to show. "Tell me why you attacked my mate. Tell me what you know about these giant beasts. Tell me what my uncle has to do with it! Speak!"
He squirms under my grip, but still doesn't speak. I drop him, my patience wearing thin, and kick him in the stomach, sending him rolling across the floor. My anger is blinding. For a moment, the satisfaction of seeing him squirm loosens the knot in my chest. There's nothing I can do to change what Maddie went through, but I can unleash my hatred on this miserable man.
"You have no idea what you're in for, do you? I've kicked your ass before, and there's no way out of this one. Your friends or your stupid Alpha aren't coming," I warn, pacing around him. "You think you can play with us. But you're wrong. The Three Dragons aren't going anywhere."
He clutches his ribs, panting, and finally speaks, his voice trembling but defiant. "You don't understand. We... we were just following orders. Everyone... has their own plans. This isn't just an attack. It's... bigger."
I stop. Something bigger. What does that mean?
"Explain," I glare at him, but my focus is on every word that comes out of his mouth.
"The Council isn't the only thing you need to worry about," he coughs. "Our leaders... they have their own interests. And your mate, this human... she means something to them. Something you can't understand."
Gerard. The bastard kept slipping away from us, and this was our only chance to confront him directly. We needed proof.
"We should finish him, no matter what the consequences," Ajax whispers in my head. My wolf is more impulsive than I am, but I know he's right.
I feel the anger bubble up again, but this time I hold it back. "I needed more information." I crouch down and move closer to him, my eyes burning with determination.
"What does Maddie mean to all of you? What does she have to do with this? There must be more to her than just being our mate, right? I could almost swear that you are obsessed with her. And you know it's going to be your undoing. You can't touch another wolf's mate, it's sacrilege! Even more so if she's a Luna."
The wolf looks at me, his eyes filled with pain and fear. I grab his throat and squeeze lightly, just enough to make him feel the imminent danger.
"Speak!"
"She... she's important to them," he manages to say between gasps. "But I don't know why. I only know that there's more at stake than you think. The ritual shouldn't happen... or at least she shouldn't survive. That would leave the humans defenseless. And now that she's alive... it's going to get worse."
I let him go abruptly, feeling a mixture of frustration and hatred. They were planning something, something bigger than I had imagined. And Maddie was at the center of it. Just thinking about it made me want to rip the bastard's head off in front of me, but I knew it wasn't over yet. The humans had always been the key, and I remembered how we found Maddie. They were after the human women. Just the thought of it makes my head hurt.
"I'm warning you," I say, leaning over him. "If I find out you know more than you've told me, you'll wish you were dead. And believe me, I'm very good at making my prisoners suffer."
I leave him on the ground, groaning as my thoughts swirl around what I've just heard. "Something bigger. Maddie was part of their plans." And here I was, wasting time interrogating this idiot while she was in danger.
When I get back to the Alpha's office, there are only more problems. The typical enemy searches, the agony of wolves who couldn't find their mates, production problems in the territories... while I can't stop thinking about what Mafia told me.
"Damn Dominic," I mutter to myself and want to throw the pile of papers on my desk out of the window. They meant nothing to me. There were more important things.
My brother had left me in charge of the pack while he was probably lost in the arms of our mate. And here I am, beating prisoners, searching for answers that give me no peace. The wolves come to ask me one thing or another, I don't even have time to escape to see what those two are up to.
"Alpha, are you okay?" I hear a voice and my mood improves noticeably when I see the Golden Boys appear.
"Alpha, we're reporting for duty."
"Thank the goddess. I can't tell you how happy I am that you're back!" I go to hug the twins, and they're smiling and relaxed, fresh from their vacation. Frankly, I don't mind dumping a bunch of problems on them. Poor souls.
"I have important information. There's a lot we need to sort out," I tell them and begin to fill them in. I watch as their relaxed expressions, typical of those who've had a blissful vacation, probably without leaving their buddy's bed, disappear. I should feel bad for ruining their return, but I don't have time for that.
"We've got a lot to do, too much," I start to give orders when I'm interrupted again.
"What the hell now?" I howl.
"Alpha... Alpha Oscar is nowhere to be found," a warrior says.
"What the fuck?"
"What do you mean?" I ask.
"He has disappeared. He and Luna Vera are gone."
