Chapter 143: The hidden mate
Dominic
"Your mate? Is Vera your mate? How is that possible?" my beta asks while I remain in shock, not understanding anything this man is explaining.
" It was something I was not allowed to say. Oscar made sure that no one else knew; he forbade me to even mention it, using his Alpha command. But I just can't deny it... you can't just deny your soul mate," he mentions, and he's right. I remember how hard it was for me to deny Maddie. Rowan exhales, as if the secret had been killing him and now he was finally free.
"I need you to explain how this happened, right now!" I order, as I am an Alpha too, and he had sworn to protect our pack. As far as I can see, Rowan has done many things, but not this. The man begins to tell us a story that reveals the ambitious and inhuman nature of my uncle.
"Oscar and I had always been friends, and at one point we even joked about the possibility of sharing a mate. But then he changed. He began to become a possessive man, extremely ambitious, wanting far more power than was rightfully his."
"When did this happen?" I ask.
"It was during one of his incursions into human towns. He said that they were inferior creatures, but that they still only had one partner, or at least they didn't share them as willingly with others," the man says, and Lionel and I growl. "There were also fights with other packs, and the situation with the mates got worse. Then your parents died... I think Oscar was always jealous that your father only had one mate."
"My father would never have cared if my mother had other mates, as long as they were destined," I say, because it is true. Our father would never have prevented our mother from being happy.
"I know, your father was an incredible man. The worst thing that could have happened was his death, because Oscar's ambitions only grew. And just as he was taking over as Alpha of the pack, during that ceremony, he met Vera, and they discovered they were mates. That same night, I discovered that she was mine too" I'm beginning to understand.
"In my uncle's mind, it must have been a bad sign to share a mate. He was under the impression that a true Alpha didn't share, like my father" he whispered, remembering the same idea my older brother had once had. This is a common bad, bad idea.
"I suppose the Alpha forbade you to be with her," Lionel comments, nodding.
"He forbade me to tell anyone that she was mine too, and we never shared her. I was with her, always in secret. We marked her, but it wasn't a complete mark. As a result, the bond between us was never truly strong. She suffered a lot and so did I. Many times I wanted to leave, but I couldn't leave her... I was trapped," he explains, and now I feel sorry for him. What my uncle did was terrible.
"And he made you his pawn, the one who did all his dirty work?" I ask and he nods. It was a terrible secret, and now I understood a lot about the strange dynamic between them. Oscar must have pressured and threatened him.
"That's why you ran away..."
"He wanted me to be a spy, to watch over all of you, but I couldn't leave her"
"There are many terrible things happening. We need you to tell us exactly what else you know," I demand, but the man hesitates. For some time now there has been more going on, things we didn't know about, and this was absolute confirmation: we had been betrayed in our own pack, buried under many secrets.
"Tell us how the Night Wolves are involved," my friend asks, but Rowan shakes.
"I can't say much. He's still my Alpha, and I'm bound by his command," he replies, sweating.
"Then tell us what you can."
"He plans to stay with the pack, of course. He's talked to others, several Alphas, and they're promising mates for all of them, but that's hardly possible. He wants to strike out at Moonvalley, to show you up as inadequate and incompetent. He's been spreading this rumor for some time. Also... that the human girl, and that's going to be a curse. I can't say more, but you must be careful with the humans," he says, and my friend nods. It seems we have a lot of work to do.
"Come with us, we'll help you get Vera back," I tell him, but he looks at me and shakes his head.
"I can help from here. I'll find her, and I'll stay close to her, and I promise to send information. She and I need a safe place, and I know it's with you," he says. Against my better judgement, I let him go, I set him free and let him fight for her and for his life.
"I swear on my mate, Vera... she's what I love most in this world, I'll help you" he says, and I watch him walk away in the distance.
"It makes me tremble, all the secrets this man knows, secrets he still can't tell us. What else is hidden?" my friend sighs.
"I don't know, but we'll find out. And for now, we'll keep him under surveillance,' I say. That night and the next day we follow him. He couldn't say anything more verbally, but we could get the information another way.
"A battle is coming, Alpha,' one of the warriors tells me when we see a lot of movement. This was extremely worrying.
"Stay here, keep us informed," I told a couple of warriors, and they followed my order.
"What do we do now?" Lionel asks.
"We prepare to attack. Stop reacting, stop responding to ruthless attacks. Let's stop waiting and plan to strike first. The Three Dragons will make the first move."
