Chapter 144: The target uncovered
"Where are you, Little Wolf?" I ask with a sigh as I stare out of the window. It seems like all I do now is wait. Waiting for Dominic to come back, for Little Wolf to reappear, for Logan to wake up. But none of it happens. Even Kurt, who is so overwhelmed by everything that's going on, rarely comes to see me, and I feel frustrated.
"I'm just hoping for some good news at least," I say aloud. Just one simple sign that things aren't as bad as we think, even though that seems almost impossible. Then I see a strange movement at the window, as if someone is approaching. I can't make out who it is, and I feel a shiver run down my spine, but whoever it is seems to pull back when I hear a voice speaking to me.
"Maddie... mate." Turning towards the bed in the infirmary and realize it's Logan.
I've spent a lot of time with him; everyone is convinced that my presence will help him recover, and I'm holding on to that small hope.
Who could have been so close?
Could they have sensed the Alpha awakening? I wonder, but seeing Logan's restlessness makes me forget all about it. He's still lying on the bed, and the doctor hasn't spared him: he's hooked up to medication and several machines.
"Maddie, Maddie..." he mumbles, shaking as I rush to his side and take his hand. He's having a nightmare, and it's clear it's causing him immense pain. He's sweating and his arms and hands are shaking.
"Logan, I'm here, I'm here, your mate," I say. I wipe his forehead with a cloth. He seems to calm down, and when I least expect it, he opens his eyes and looks at me, surprised, as if he doesn't know where he is, and even more surprised to see me there.
"Maddie..."
"Yes, it's me, I'm here. You've been hurt, but Dr Karim says you're going to be all right. You'll get better, you'll see," I tell him, smiling and trying to encourage him. I've spent many hours dreaming of seeing his blue eyes again, and now that they're right in front of me, they seem even more beautiful - and at the same time, utterly desperate.
"You...here" he says, now holding my hands as if he's afraid I'll disappear at any moment.
"You're OK, it's all right."
"No, it's not," he replies, worried, trying to sit up, but I gently push him back onto the bed. He looks at me with a desperate expression.
"There's so much danger... the humans, the beasts, the attack... the Council is behind it all," he says, agitated, and I sit beside him, stroking his face, trying to offer him some comfort and reassurance.
"Everyone is working on it. We can handle this, Logan," I tell him, smiling. He sighs and suddenly falls silent, staring at my face, studying me with deep concern.
"Madeleine... I'm sorry... I'm so sorry," he says, breathing harder and harder until he seems to go into shock. Suddenly, the machines he's hooked up to start beeping and sounding alarms. Within seconds, the doctor and one of her mates are rushing in to tend to him, while I stand in the corner, worried and concerned.
"Will he be okay?" They seem to be injecting him with a sedative as he falls back into a deep sleep.
"Let's hope so. He needs rest," the doctor whispers. I heard a commotion in the distance and the doctor's mate ran off. My joy is immense when I see a group of men carrying more wounded men into the packhouse, and I see Dominic moving among them.
"Mate!" I call. He comes to me, picks me up, kisses me and hugs me, overjoyed to be back.
"I missed you so much," he whispers in delight, and I suddenly notice that he has some wounds and his clothes are dirty.
"What happened?" I ask and his expression turns grim.
"So much has happened. There's a lot we need to talk about," he says. A few hours later, after he's cleaned up and had his wounds tended to, we gather with Kurt, Robin, the twins and other warriors. My mate begins to tell us about his meeting with Rowan, the secrets of Vera, and what they found in that strange laboratory in the middle of the forest.
"This doesn't seem real, but nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to our uncle," Kurt scoffs.
"I'm sure Rowan will help us and keep his word. We have an important spy, and we have left a few men behind to continue the investigation."
"What do you suggest as a first step?" Liam asks.
"Well, according to the information you've analyzed on the maps, the evidence Logan's gathered and what I've brought back from the lab... everything points to a direct attack on the human towns. And of course we can't let that happen," Dominic says. I put my hands to my chest, feeling my heart pounding. Kurt hugs me, no doubt sensing my distress.
"This is going to be our priority, mate. We won't let anything happen. And my brother is right: we have to stop resisting and holding back. We have to strike first. We won't let anything happen to your family or your town. What they fear is a union between our pack and the human towns, and that's probably what we need to do.
Robin looks at me, worried. I know what she's thinking: I have to talk to them, I have to tell them about the messages. I haven't had any in the last few days, and the person I saw at the window made me uneasy. Could it be someone coming to leave me a message? Little Wolf is missing... none of this is a good sign.
"Then it's decided. We'll go to the human city, and we'll do it as soon as possible. From now on, we're on high alert. No one can enter or leave the pack without one of us approving it. We must show our strength. We have to show them that they can't mess with us anymore"
