Chapter 115: Logan's evidence

Kurt

At a moment when we are facing overwhelming challenges, when it seems like everyone wants to destroy us, Logan steps forward. I suspect it is another turn of these despicable council members, but I am shocked to realize that my older brother brings news that will be of no comfort to these decrepit men.

“I have proof that what my brothers say is true,” he announces, and all eyes and attention turn to him.

“Where have you been, Logan? Your place was here, with the pack,” our uncle asks nervously. My brother strides confidently towards the chaos of this not-quite-improvised trial.

“The alpha has no business here. He should simply await the outcome and leave the affairs of the ritual to the council,” an elder adds, causing my brother to growl.

“I have every right to be here, because this is my pack. And like I said, I am the alpha heir. Besides, she was sent to this ritual in part because of me,” Logan replies. I am taken aback and blink several times to reassure myself that he's really on our side, though I have a hard time trusting him.

“Logan...baby…” Irina interjects and grabs his arm. But he shakes her off and speaks in a firm, confident voice.
“People of the Moonvalley pack, friends and family. You know what I have done to preserve my father and mother's heritage. I even went against my own brothers to do so, because I believed that the human was not the right person to be our Luna, your Luna. But today, I am here to tell you that what my brothers say is true,” says Logan. The murmur is now audible to everyone, and everyone is completely taken aback. Maddie, sitting next to me, seems to think this could be a trap, a blow too deep.

“Logan, my Alpha, what are you implying?” Irina asks incredulously. But he continues, the words flowing from his mouth with ease and certainty. He knows that what he is saying is not easy to admit, not for someone so self-centered and used to thinking only of himself.

“I have been to the old temple and seen wolves from other packs conspiring against us, and they have captured the human," he shouts, and I hear shouts of disbelief. The elders of the council are getting restless and understand that they have lost control, because Logan has attracted everyone’s attention.

“What are you talking about? What you’re saying is madness!” they reply.

“Enough of this nonsense, Logan. If you don’t have any proof, it’s better not to upset the mob,” says our uncle, who also looks startled. And rightly so.

“I have one witness, actually I have two,” he says. And as if it were a spectacle, Liam and a tall bald man I recognize as one of the Night Wolves come through the door. The council elders look like they’re about to have a heart attack, and Robin and Lionel weep with joy when they see that Liam is safe.

“Mate!”

“Bro!”

Liam limps forward, but he drags Mafia, who looks like he’s been hit by a truck and doesn’t know where he is, kneeling on the ground.

“What our Alpha says is true. I was a prisoner of wolves who hate our pack and who attacked our Luna, Maddie,” the Beta announces. Liam begins to describe everything that happened in detail. Mafia can’t say a word, but it’s clear they caught him in the act, and all evidence points to other packs being involved in this atrocity.

“Logan, what I’m hearing is that the Beta has been helping humans, not just your own brothers. All of this points to the rite being altered and the human cheating! It's all lie! A terrible lie!” one of the council members yells, trying to fix the situation.

“We did not interfere. We watched from afar and saw giant beasts attack her, along with rogues and men sent specifically to make sure she didn’t survive the rite,” Liam explains. Logan looks so sure; I don’t know what else he's up to, my mate hugs me in horror.

“Giant beasts? What are you talking about, boy? You’ve hit your head so hard you’re losing touch with reality,” says my uncle. Many are curious and surprised by what our beta claims.

“I have proof of this beast. Some of our warriors will bring it here shortly. And as for proof that the rite was correct, there is infallible proof that leaves no room for doubt,” Logan mentions. I watch in amazement as a small wolf appears behind him, which I am afraid of.

“A wild wolf!”

“A real wolf!” the people shout. The animal, startled by all the attention, belongs in the forest, not here.

“What's the meaning of this?” asks one of the council, red with rage. My uncle has undoubtedly ordered the wolf to be caught. He’s important evidence, and now he’s here as if nothing had happened.

“Councillors, you should know better than anyone that the proof of the wolf keeper is not only Luna’s survival, but that she can take care of the pack and everyone in it. And even though she’s human, if she can bond and protect a wolf, that’s all it takes, and that’s what she did. She took care of the wolf; there’s evidence that it was healed by a human,” Logan says, and one of the wolf’s paws is wrapped in a worn bandage or piece of cloth. Amazing.

“That’s not true! She had help!” Irina shouts, urging the crowd to support her, to believe her. But the pack now has clear evidence. They won’t be swayed, at least that’s what I think.

“The rite has been corrupted! It is not legal! It doesn’t count!”

“She did it! She’s our Luna!” pack members scream. Maddie clings to me, afraid of what will happen.

“She took care of him and fed him with her own food!” Liam announces, while everyone stares transfixed at the animal.

“It’s true!”

“She healed the wolf!”

“How do we know it's true?” the wretched men keep demanding proof as I make way for my mate. She kneels down, and we all watch in shock as the animal walks towards her.

“Friend, little wolf,” she whispers delightedly. The closer the wolf gets to her, the faster his steps become until he is in her arms in the blink of an eye. Maddie hugs him and cries with joy.

The little wolf howls, wags his tail and licks her face. It is obvious that they are both happy to be reunited, and all around us there is not just wonder, but complete admiration.
