Chapter 84: Abrupt farewell

Maddie

"What do you mean by 'now'?" I asked, scandalized. The council members continued to insist and give orders, and warriors from our own pack approached us, even as Logan tried to interfere.

"What the hell is this? This is not what we agreed on!" he shouts over the crowd, but it was obvious that everything was already in motion and there was nothing we could do.

"The decision of the pack is final. You may be alpha, Logan, but the members of the pack have spoken," a man from the council say as his uncle tried to calm him down.

"You're not taking her! You're not taking her anywhere!" Kurt insisted angrily as he began to break free of the guards and warriors trying to hold him, and I saw my mate transform into a large, terrifying wolf. Things were getting out of control, and it looked like we weren't going to win.

"Get the human before she gets away!" Irina yelled and Dominic stepped in front of me.

"She's not going anywhere," he said, spreading his arms out to protect me. The Council members were in front of us in an instant.

"Rules are rules, the choice of the pack is clear: you've presented your mate, that was the agreement."

"You shouldn't be here! You're interfering in our pack's affairs!" Dominic yells angrily, holding out a hand for me to take. He was shaking and I panicked. Kurt was being restrained, still howling.

"Kurt..." I sobbed, terrified.

"Let's prepare her," one of the twins said as Dominic shook his head.

"No! She can't leave without us!"

I thought this was just a nightmare from which I would wake up, open my eyes and find myself in their arms as if nothing had happened. This couldn't be happening.

"Make it quick," the Councilman said, and I was taken to my rooms while Dominic continued to argue. The twins took my hand while Dominic cried and screamed my name. They began to take some of my things and put them in a backpack.

"The alphas didn't think of this, you don't have clothes for this kind of situation," one of the twins said, rifling through my things while I stood frozen at the foot of the bed, not understanding if this was some kind of simulation or if this was really happening, that I was leaving the pack for a rite to God knows where.

"No, I don't have an 'outfit' to go to a dangerous rite while being expelled from the pack and separated from my mates," I replied, shaking. Within seconds I was in Dominic's arms.

"I'm so sorry, mate... it shouldn't have happened."

"Help us, Alpha!" the twins said as they continued to pack things into my backpack. Dominic stroked my hair, and I saw him crying, and if this made him feel that way, then my fate was sealed. He helped me get undressed and put on jeans, a shirt and a jacket.

"Take this, mate, and don't let anyone find it," he suggested, taking a knife from his pocket and hiding it in my boot.

"Get out of here!" a voice shouted, banging on the door. The twins were adding more things to my backpack when the door was flung open and I jumped.

"It's time for the human to leave," a resonant voice said. Logan was still arguing when Irina appeared behind him, very pleased, and took the backpack from my hands.

"The alpha knows very well that she's not allowed to take so many things," she said, and began to remove clothes and food that the twins had prepared for me.

"Warrior, she is human!" one of the twins said, but the warrior silenced him.

"You said that humans have no weaknesses or disadvantages compared to wolves. You even mated and marked a human, so you have no excuses," she pointed out as she continued to remove more items.

"That's not fair!" I said desperately, and she approached me threateningly.

"Back off, Irina, or I won't be responsible for what I do...!" Dominic growled.

"Are you going to harm a she-wolf? You know that's against our laws,"

"You will pay for this,"

"Enough of this nonsense, move!" I heard more shouting as my mate held me as we left the packhouse.

"Search her!" yelled one of the Council guards. I panicked.

"No one touches my mate! No one! It's forbidden by our laws," Dominic shouted. The Councilman seemed to be saying that I wasn't his mate, but he agreed anyway.

"You must flee as soon as you can, mate... you must..." Dominic whispered. But the warriors grabbed my arm and pulled me away from him.

"No, please!" I screamed, terrified. Dominic cried as they held him, he fought his way to me and hugged and kissed me. It felt like goodbye, and that scared me even more.

"Take care, hide in a dry place, and if possible, somewhere high. Very few people know this, but wolves aren't good climbers. They'll ambush you, I'm sure."

"What...?"

"We're coming for you, mate, I swear. But in the meantime, you need to stay safe," he said, holding my face as they tried to separate us.

"You are not weak. You can handle all of this and more, mate. You were just a teenager when you hurt us. Use the wolfsbane, protect yourself, use the forest to your advantage. Remember everything you learned about werewolves in the town. The humans were right, remember everything," he said with a shaking voice.

Finally, they managed to separate us completely and dragged me away. He kept struggling, trying to reach me. They put me in the car and I kept hearing his screams. The twins were holding him, and I knew it was to prevent worse things from happening.

"Kurt, where are you? Dominic!" I called in vain.

"I'm coming to get you, mate! I promise! We won't leave you alone!"

"The rite cannot be interrupted. It's punishable by wolf law," one of the council members said as they got into their cars.

Behind them I saw Logan fighting with Irina and I guess the happy couple was not so happy anymore. But what does it matter now? I don't know where Kurt is. Dominic was on his knees, begging. Alpha Oscar tried to handle the situation and Luna Vera just observe. When the door closed, I didn't hear anything else. The car window was automatic and I couldn't roll it down.

"Let's go, there's no time to lose," the councilmen said.

The car started and I saw Dominic begging and screaming. When I looked back, I saw a gray wolf running, and I knew it was him. He was huge and beautiful, and as the car accelerated, I heard him howl. He stayed behind and I broke down crying, unable to control myself.
