Chapter 152
We had sat for what felt like forever as everyone around us watched us or talked about the day together as though I was not even there. I was happy though when I finally found a break when everyone was in their own worlds. I had finally stopped being the center of attention and was able to slip away. Once out the backside door and being too tired to stick around and everyone was still having fun, I haled a cab to the house. Because I just did not have the energy to explain why I was leaving. I got home and was happy that I was not followed, and no calls had come through yet but then again couldn’t find my phone. I figured it was do, to I left it in the back of the limo. I ran in the house and grabbed the cash for the cab and thanked him for everything before heading back inside locking the door and grabbing the ringing phone. “I’m fine sorry I didn’t say anything… I left my cell in the back of the limo along with my purse so if you could just bring it to me some time later not now…” my father cut me off informing that Sharene was bringing it to me and should be pulling up at any moment. I opened the front door and found her pulling into the driveway and struggling. As her daughter was screaming bloody murder and was trying to get things out of the back first.
My brain finally kicked in as I ran out and took it all which was nothing but food and notes from people who were at the luncheon. “I’ve got it sweets, get Madeline and head in make your-self at home” I whispered as I grabbed the things with my cart in the garage. Sharene and Madeline were hanging out in the small cozy living room just off the kitchen and Madeline was calm again. “I.. umm is there anything else I should do or grab from the jeep?” I asked knowing that she had overnight bags and baby things in the back. I really did not want her to leave since I was so heart broken and needed her to fix it. “That depends on you and if your offer was serious or not, if it was then I’m going to take it and that’s me saying yes. I have nowhere to live since the house in California was on the market for 2 days and it sold already thanks to your father. My in-laws were actually happy for me and Maddie and told me that it was good I was moving on and that if they are needed, they’d be here in a heartbeat. They left yesterday on a world trip and were so happy to be going. They have always wanted to visit all the places my husband wanted them to. As for my parents they are a little confused, but they are happy and will be here in a few weeks. Ummm to help finish moving a few things down here once I find a place to live. Your parents offered for us to stay in their home so I’m good for a few but don’t like living with other people. It’ll hopefully be a quick stay…” she said before I walked out of the room.
After hearing her say she was staying and not just for a few weeks, but actually for work I went and took everything out of her Jeep. I brought it inside setting it by the stairs and knew I did not want her to leave ever. Sharene was standing near the kitchen arch way coming towards me with Madeline facing me as her mother held her gently in her arms at her front. “Why did you bring all that in here after I just said I’d be staying with your parents….” “NO… you have this big house to yourself when I leave in a couple of weeks and it’s plenty big. My brother’s room is not going to change though since it hasn’t in 16 years. As for the other rooms, they are pretty much blank canvas’s. My parents, room is the biggest and I’d love to show you around if you’d let me” I said picking up the few things that I sat down last. I headed up the steps with them and looked down over the side of the rail hoping she would follow me.
After the initial shock wore off, she smiled and followed close behind me letting me show her around including with Ethan’s room first. “It’s cleaned on a weekly basis now that I got it all straightened up and fixed the things that were broken. I had put things back in here that were thrown out” I said after closing the door. I went on to my room next showing her and Madeline the whole thing which did not take long. Then down each hall we went until we finally saw the 5th bedroom on the 3rd floor. “There is more below us but it’s all empty since it only has 2 huge rooms that are.. Well I guess about as big as the master room. There is a basement that is being redone to have everything I want my home gym to look like. The main floor has the 2 living rooms, study, office, and there is a pool and a guest house if you want to see it all” I shrugged as we finally headed back down. Madeline went into her swing after I set it up in the small living room and stepped back. I watched as Sharene laid her in and started the swing up slow and gentle. I was standing in the doorway of the living room with my shoulder leaning up against the wall. I just watched how great of a mother Sharene was and what a good little girl she had. “So now you know all my secrets… must be nice for you…” I said not sure why I had said it since it sounded a little harsh.
Before I could get to, crazy I slowly turned and started to walk away until Sharene was at my back holding me and doing her best not to cry. “I’ve known for…. For a while now and that’s one reason I backed off for a bit and I kept in contact with your parents on a daily basis. It makes me feel sad for you and I know you don’t want to hear. I’m here for you as a friend or when you decide you want more. I’d wait forever for you…..” “Move in here… live here with Madeline while I’m away and if you feel like you need to move out. I’ll make sure you find the best place for her to grow up in and go to the best schools. I’m glad you are going to take the job since it’s what you are looking to have a career in if I’m not wrong. I hope Giovanni and my father told you about the whole thing…” I said and by the look on her face she was a little confused. Sharene let me go so I could turn around and put her head on my chest. “Well actually no I just know it’s at the gym and something to do with the construction and new addition opening up in like 3 months. I hear that you designed the whole thing, but your father was supposed to have us all sit down before you and your parents leave for Oxford in a couple of weeks” she whispered softly as she breathed me in.
After a couple more seconds I put my arms around her finally and held her close kissing the top of her head. Then looking across to see that Madeline was sound asleep now. “Will she be ok here by the front door with all the other doors closed? We can leave the backsliding door opened with the screen door closed so we can hear her. I just want to finish showing you out back and the guest house in case you want your parents to stay out there while they are visiting” I whispered into her ear. Sharene took my hand and led the way out letting me show her the rest of the property and was also stretched back behind the guest house a good acer or so. The house phone began to ring and Sharene ran towards it so that it would not wake up Madeline and answered it “Hi… yea she’s here let me get her on the line” she said to whoever it was on the other end. I took it after she held it out “Hello….” I whispered so I would not wake up Madeline.
My friends informed me they would be pulling up in the drive in a few mins and to meet them out front. I opened the door, and my friends came piling inside with their bags for the day or days but was not sure on the latter. “How long are you in for?” I ask and they smiled. “We have 2 weeks off before we are deployed for real since we’ve been on training detail the last couple of weeks. So we get to see you and Cate off to school…” “Ya who would have thought you’d be going all the way to Europe, Cate in Cali and us all over the world..” Nicholas said cutting his husband off. “Wow, well I just offered Sharene to move in here with Madeline until she either finds a place or doesn’t. My parents offered them to stay at their big ass house which I’m sure you all saw now and rather be there then here….” I laughed and regretted it when baby Madeline started crying. Catherine went running and took over wanting to hold Madeline again and was so happy to have a little baby around again. The guys just sat back and watched with me as Sharene, and Catherine talked baby talk and motherhood.
