Book 2: In the Life of Mia: College: Chapter 24

The chef had brought us a special desert giving us just enough of a sugar high to get us up and moving again by 3:00pm. We were back to my parents 20 mins later thanks to Bailey flying down the highway which I slept the whole way in Sharene’s lap again not even realizing it. “Honey come on you fell asleep again come on sleepy head let’s get you inside please” she ran her hands through my hair and down my back waking me the rest of the way. I was completely exhausted more than I had ever felt before and knew it had to do with all the craziness that I was having to deal with since being back home and now the death of a school mate. Bailey and Lola stayed close while Sharene had stayed by my side completely leading me into the house and into the family room where we all heard talking. Madeline was having tummy time on the floor and something just told me to go to her and lay on the floor with her and that’s exactly where I went laying on my stomach and watching her kick and play. As she saw me though she rolled my way putting herself right on my side and sliding down slowly to her back and everyone laughed and making little noises. “She is totally smitten with you… she looks for you when you are not around, and when she hears your voice or sees you gets all excited” Gemma was so pleased with how her granddaughter liked me. I had smiled and moved my arm down to my side so that she could see my face and I could see hers.
The evening had come quickly with my parent’s hating that I was to leave in the morning and taking Sharene and Madeline along including her parents and in-law’s if they wanted to that was. “I am sorry, I want to at least sleep one good night in my own bed and have a busy morning so you are lucky I’m even staying here tonight since I have to be out the door by 7:30 am just to get home in time. I promise to call and say goodnight tomorrow before bed and I will see you in the morning before I leave since you’ll both be there with me seeing me off” I felt bad that I was putting my foot down. We had all eaten an early dinner and Sharene had Madeline in bed by 7:30 pm so that she could get back to her routine since it had been so crazy since I had been home for a few days. The extra house guests had also taken their leave by 8:30pm with my grandparents heading back to California with my aunt Savannah and Sebastian for their upcoming wedding that would be taking place in just 6 months. My mothers’ half-sister had decided to stay a little longer letting her father, and stepmother leave to go back to traveling while she stayed to be with my mother and be there when the baby was born. My parents decided to let her stay in the guest house giving her, her own space until she decided what she wanted to do next whatever that might be. Bruce had left as well but went back to his condo near the Gym after becoming a member and loved being around his brother, my father and Giovanni who had started to train him.
I was lying on the couch on my front relaxing and so comfortable that I did not care who had come into the small living room I had occupied until my father cleared his throat and sat down just to the left of me. “You and I need to talk, and I have decided that if you are doing this then that’s fine, but I need to have all the signatures in place to do so. Have you even talked it over with Sharene about you leaving it all to her along with buying life insurance of a ½ a million that will go to her if something happens to you” he asked sounding tired than I had heard in a while. I slowly opened my eyes looking at him and then a few seconds later in walked Sharene and my mother who were laughing about some stupid commercial they had seen on T.V. I did not move just stayed where I was but buried my face into the cushion not understanding why we needed to do it now, but also knowing he did not need anyone’s signature but mine. “Ugh… seriously you are so full of it and we both know that I know you don’t need anyone’s signature but mine… so why are you doing this to me?” before screaming into the cushion as my face stayed deep in the cushion. Sharene and laughed not understanding why I was having a fit like a child on the couch and spread her body over mine as I lie there. “Hey.. what’s going on in here? Your father asked your mother and I to come in here so we could all talk about something” she giggled softly into my ear.
My parents sat close together and Sharene immediately took notice of it and got up and off of my back giving me ample time to do the same. “Ok… fine what exactly do you want from me.. I gave you a task to do which I didn’t think was that big of a deal, but I guess I was wrong.. so you want me to tell her everything all the way down to the policy and all?” I asked looking at both my parents who gave me a look of “Duh” and looked to Sharene. I cleared my throat and turned to face Sharene who was now really confused on what was happening “Hi beautiful…. I planned on doing this at a later date but since my father wants me to do it now… I don’t really have much of a choice. Father….” I put out my hand for the papers he obviously got written up in double time and now realizing that the deed for the house was at the top and the one thing that she did need to sign for sure. I pulled up the ottoman placing the folder on it and wide open picking up the paper that she’d need to sign if she were to be added to the deed of the house we now shared for the past couple of months. “I should have asked you first to see if you even wanted to be put on this, but just figured that you would and did it anyways well sort of I guess since I asked my father to do a few things for me…. even though I was not expecting it to be done so soon since I thought for sure it’d take until thanksgiving for him to actually get it done” I frowned now looking at my parents with a nervous laugh as I handed it to her.
Sharene was staring at the paper and had only made a little noise but did not say anything right away until I touched her wrist and she pulled back a little and angled herself in a way that I thought for sure she would be getting up and walking out. “I’m not… I hope you don’t think that I was expecting this or that I’m trying to take advantage of you or your daughter… I love you all so much and I don’t need to be put on this to keep feeling the way I do. Maybe I should start looking for a place to live…..” “Nope… that’s not what this is about… I have no one to leave it to if something should happen to me, and I want you to feel like it’s your home too since it is and it’s a great place to raise children” I turned back focusing on her face as she refused to look at me as she was so focused on my parents’. My parents’ already knew what I knew and promised that was not what they were thinking “Oh dear girl, this has nothing to do with you in that way… but there is a lot to being part of this family and you have only scratched the surface..” “Amelia is right angel this is us getting you included in this conversation with our daughter. She has more so you might want to listen a little longer” my father touched her hand softly.
Sharene took a sip of water and finally focused on me and then back at the folder again. “Ok, continue” she said placing the paper on my lap for the deed to be changed. I reached for the next paper in the folder which was that of a policy that had been drawn up for my life insurance. “Ok well this one is well how do I put it ummm a life insurance policy of ½ a million for you in case something happens to me…. and this one is my WILL leaving you everything I own including every last penny and I am not taking no for an answer. Not that you have much of a choice since I don’t need your signature on this document but do on the papers for the deed. I also want you to understand that you are the only one I’ve ever even thought about doing this with, I know it’s not exactly a commitment per-say in the way you need it to be said. My parents’ are right though our family is complicated and you’ve only scratched the surface and I’m really trying my best to let you in all the way, but it’s hard when I am still learning who I am every day. I mean I know I love you…. really love you actually and think about you even when I’m not thinking about you if that makes any since at all. I am not going to make you sign this now, take your time if that’s what you need jus….” “Pen please” she whispered holding out her hand quickly. My parent’s gasped and started to cry a little as he handed her over a pen, and I gave her a book to use as a hard surface to use while she signed. “Wow…. I mean this is really happening… not that I’ve never had my name on a deed before but just this is a big step for you, for us in whatever this turns out to be” she noted as she handed the paper to my father.
