Chapter 37
My father understood and stood to his feet before turning to my mother taking her hand and kissing it softly. “Amelia…. I know it’s been a long road for us, and we are hopefully now on the right track. I am so happy to be here with you, our beautiful, amazing, and talented daughter along with our friends. I know that you wish the rest of our family were here for this special night and I really tried to make that happen, but it just was not the right time. However, I do have another special surprise coming up soon and of course cake and other dessert” my father announced lovingly to my mother. My father Ethan’s words touched me so much that I hoped what he said was true. Not just a front or show to keep others at bay and away from what our family was really going through.
The crew cleaned up the table while the rest of us sat back and listened to the soft jazz my father had turned on from his phone. I slowly slipped from my seat blowing a kiss towards my parents. “I’d really love to get a good spot and watch the sunset finish out, hope you don’t mind if I excuse myself” I whispered as I stood and headed towards a spot that was quiet. Nicholas and Jose followed close behind not asking just doing and I was fine with that for the most part. Only if they left the shit about Catherine and, I out of it or Catherine and Asher not sure what I’d even have to say. I had gone to the top deck the highest point I could get to be closer to the amazing view we were all so blessed with.
Jose and Nicholas found a good spot for cuddling up on the lounger and whispering. "What are you two girls whispering and giggling about over there?" I asked with a light tone as I took my spot on the floor of the deck. Jose leaned up on his elbow and looked down at me "Well you are acting really weird today and we have hardly seen you, Nick said you all had fun at the reef. Which is good, but then you came back and were like all over the place" he said with a questioning tone. I rolled my eyes and laughed a little before answering him back "Look I'm in a really happy mood right now, I felt I had to keep moving around when my parents kept disappearing on me and leaving their guests. Plus, the rest of you were off cuddling and doing your own thing as well, and you don't see me crying about it..." Nicholas snickered which told me I was not far from the truth and knowing how sexual they both could get. I definitely didn't want details. "Exactly sooooo now if you don't mind.... I came up here for relaxation and to watch this amazing sunset" I reminded them before putting my attention back on the view.
Jose just groaned and laid back down with Nick cooing him and kissing him so that he would just lay quiet and not cause trouble which he loved to do. The rest of the sunset was amazing and was happy that I took the time to relax and have a peaceful moment before whatever came next of surprises from my father. I slowly sat up and looked around seeing that the yacht was just about to its final stop near our island. "Wow looks so tiny compared to when we're out here on the open water. I better get back down there since my father said he had another gift for my mother and don't want him to have to come looking for us!" I informed them. As though it were on cue my father found us stretching and ready to make our way down to the party goers. "Well looks like you 3 are well relaxed, because we now need you to join us for the final finish to this amazing day" he said as he wrapped his arms around me and pulled me close.
I let my father hold me a little longer knowing he did not get much time to do that partly my fault since I was such an independent child and would continue to be an independent woman. "Ok, Ok lets’ not, keep everyone waiting on us now. Did Cate and Asher make it back down or do we have to hunt for them too?" I asked pulling away from my father who gave me the look of what "disappointment, gratification, love?" well I just was not sure maybe all of them. "Yes, they just got back, and we thought you'd found them that's why we figured you would be right behind them. Yet after a few minutes I knew that was not the case and here I am!" my father shrugged with a little amusement to his tone. Nicholas and Jose led the way and glad I did since my father was yapping about which he had been doing on and off all day and about all sorts of things. "So... Catie and Asher seem to be hitting it off, and your mother and his family thought you two would hit it off.... with that said I think you are way too strong for your own good. In a way, it is a bad thing only because that can be a lonely life, but I want you to remember to never settle. To follow your heart, but most of all your dreams, I see so much life is in you and the possibilities that are ahead for you are so amazing to me. Whether you go into pre-law or pre-med, yes I know both or even something different all together. I just want you to know, no matter what I am always going to be your father and love you either way. I love seeing you this free baby girl.... reminds me of your mother when we got older and I really saw her as a woman if you will. Our parents knew we would always end up together even though we did not think so, but as we got to high school that was the tipping point for the both of us. I want you to know that what I have had with your mother has been the best years of my life, and whether we work out which is what I really want.... I want you to know that I'm always going to be here for you when you need me" we were both in tears before he finished talking.
Grabbing my fathers’ hand, I stopped us just before we got to the main deck where everyone was waiting not wanting anyone to see us in that state when it was a happy occasion. "Hey.... I know you love me and mother with all your heart but let’s get this crying thing under control before we gather with everyone. You are showing a whole different side of yourself which is amazing, but you and mother just have the worst timing lately. Not that there should be a timing to telling people how you feel...ugh just forget it I'm not your typical young lady and I guess that's what irritates most people. Ha anyways let’s do this please" I begged holding onto his arm as he led us the rest of the way. The deck was now lit with tiny white lights that had to look like little stars from the shoreline if you were standing there. My father walked us to where my mother was sitting and laughing with Jasmine and a few other ladies and had me sit down next to her. "Ok my 2 very precious gems now for the final surprise...." he smiled as he took out his phone and dialed a number. "Ok we can begin in 30 seconds" he informed to whomever was on the phone. As though it were timed simply perfect the fireworks shot up into the sky freaking me out for a moment. As the loud bang rang out into the dark sky followed by rays of color lighting the midnight sky, followed by the smell of sulfur in the air.My mother put her calm hand over my trembling one that sat atop my thigh and without thinking I tensed up at the touch. "I----I'm sorry...." I said looking at her and seeing the pain in her eyes. I put my hand over hers as she started to pull away and held it tight against my heart.
